In this video, I'm forging a touchmark. A blacksmith touchmark is a type of makers mark used to stamp onto his work for identification.
If you'd like to see how to make a touchmark stamp, make sure you watch this video beginning to end! A custom touchmark could be used by jewelrymakers and other types of craftsmen as well.
Let me know what you think about this video on how to make a touchmark in the comments below. If you've gone about making a touchmark stamp before, let me know how it turned out!

You read my mind on this one. I have been meaning to ask you about touchmarks. There are alot of videos out there showing how to make them, but I love your teaching style. thank you sir..

Roy, you always worry and apologize for the length on these videos. You need to stop doing that. Here’s why, knowledge, TRUE, knowledge, can’t be imparted in minutes, it takes time. However, You, have a gift that allows you to condense, effectively, years of knowledge and practice into a video (all while narrating and operating the camera) into a package that’s less than an hour. That’s true talent, and a gift given to you! So please stop apologizing, for a gift you’ve been given. We’re all here to gain knowledge (and speaking in my case at least but I’m sure there are those who share my opinion) take as much time as you need.

Thanks for another fantastic video!! Your teaching style is perfect. I tend to ramble also. My daughter and I are very new to blacksmithing only been at it for about 4 months. We are still trying to come up with a name for our shop. Making a touchmark is one thing we really want to try making. Thank you again for hard work. Proverbs14:23

Roy, I really enjoy your longer videos. I realize this one is over a year old as I write this note so maybe you won’t see it. Additionally, I have a few recommendations. 1. I really enjoy listening to Shinedown when doing tedious tasks. I’m an old school Metal Head so this may not be for you. 2. I use a pair of 3 power or #3 magnification dimestore glasses when doing very small work. You have to mess around a little to get the work the correct distance from your eyes for the view to be clear but they do work very well when the work is the correct distance from your eyes.

Great work I made my cross shape makers mark by heating and annealing an old hardened nail setting punch and then filing down the cross shape and rehardening it. It works great. Your makers mark is cool but by being flat blunt shape can it stamp a good impression in steel?

Nice video, ironically was halfwah through making one myself. Have you considered making and using a punch to set your cross in the touchmark? Or using the one you've made in the video to punch another piece, then filing up to the edges of the anvil. Leaving your touchmark as an outline, with less material to move in use.

Hey Roy I liked the video and content but why not make a live stream of making a touch mark? Something a little different that you could do as a give away or just as a demonstration so we as fans can ask questions as you work. I know that people will have questions that I'll never think of but some I could see would be the preferred size of a touch mark by you and the ones appropriate for different kinds of work.

Wouldn't it be better to anneal or normalize the steel of the touchmark, to file engrave the touchmark, itself and THEN, heat treat and temper the piece?? If you do that, you wouldn't have to worry about breaking your graver! I have often wondered if there is a REAL reason to do this AFTER it's been heat treated and tempered. Thanks, Roy, I enjoy your videos and learn a lot!

After you put that amount of work into something you want every piece you make to carry ..... why not temper it in the oven? 220C is 429F is Gas mark 7 (or a light straw) which should give a reasonable temper (and not mess up the cooker so you can bob a pizza in for tea while it is on) ;O)
