Glad to get to know about this group. Just joined, As I learn to make tools and whatnot I'll be donating but still in the beginner hobbiest level. Soon about to try and make a tomahawk and axe drift if I can manage to actually hammer H13 without blowing out my elbow.

great videos , would like to see the it to see the items you make in detail a bit more as after you finished this hammer eye I could barely see the ends and how you worked them to a finish! is that a point or a angled taper ?

I'm making an axe eye drift right now from sucker rod, and I'll possibly try making one of these next. Do you think 1.25" sucker rod will work for this in place of a ballpine hammer?

Hey John, did you do this entirely by hand? Because I'm starting to make one and holy cow that tool steel is really hard to move!!!

Making Stuff and Breaking Stuff with Al Hazelton yeah I don’t have a power hammer or press. All my work is done by hand.

Did you harden the piece after the normalzing (then grinding), before the end where you punch the hole?
@charlesholcomb65486 жыл бұрын
Been waiting for this! Thanks .What was the weight of the hammer used?
@OldHickoryForge6 жыл бұрын
Charles Holcomb I did the bulk of the drawing out with a 6 pound sledge I cut the handle short on. Then I cleaned it up with my 3.5 pound rounder

@JOMalone31135 жыл бұрын
noob question but could you not cut off that excess, and keep drawing it out, rounding it more and make it a hammer eye punch and drift?
@OldHickoryForge5 жыл бұрын
John Malone in theory yes. But a the cheeks of a hammer are forged with the drift inside. Having a handle attached to it would make that difficult.
@res31cue5 жыл бұрын
Hey John, when you tested the punch at the end of the video what kind of hammer were you using? I’m asking because i thought it was a bad idea to hit a hammer with a hammer the same hardness. Is this true? Can i hit it with the hammer you made me?
@OldHickoryForge5 жыл бұрын
res31cue that was a bronze hammer I cast awhile back. My theory was that it would prolong the life of my top tools. But because the bronze was so much softer even than non hardened steel it just deformed very quickly and made striking true very hard. As far as the hammer I made you. Yes you could but custom forging hammers are much harder than store bought hammers and would cause mushrooming on your top tools a a good bit faster. Something like a cheap 4 pound engineers hammer is ideal. They’re made slightly softer for driving steel stakes and pins

Hey Jon I'm learning alot off the awesome channel you have but if you were going to buy a forge what would you buy just would like to have a recommendation off someone who has more knowledge better than I do sincerely Daniel
@OldHickoryForge5 жыл бұрын
Daniel Shields depends how much you are looking fo spend. Devil forges and hells forges on eBay are good and relatively inexpensive. If you want to go a little higher end, Texas forges and grinders.

How does one receive a package with tools? I want to get into it and have no idea where to begin. Been eyeing some tools, but need to get them slowly.
@OldHickoryForge6 жыл бұрын
Reptile Nexus m.facebook.com/groups/176859532933055 check out the Facebook group. You have to contact one of the admins to let you in and then you can submit a bio video explaining why you think it should go to you. Then someone hast to nominate you I think.

Were you using a softer hammer when you were testing the hammer eye punch you made?
@OldHickoryForge5 жыл бұрын
Jonathon Goss I have a soft hammer I usually use to strike top tools. Engineers hammers are often softer than forging hammers also
@jonathongoss41825 жыл бұрын
Old Hickory Forge ok awesome I was wondering. I need to get one.
@csykesforge72206 жыл бұрын
Did you harden it? and if you did what was the liquid you used to quench it?
@OldHickoryForge6 жыл бұрын
Csykes Forge no. Struck tools do not need to be hardened.
@csykesforge72206 жыл бұрын
Ok. Some people I know harden them then heat up the striking end to temper. Thanks
@seanshrader49225 жыл бұрын
Do you heat treat and temper your hammer eye punches?
@OldHickoryForge5 жыл бұрын
Sean Shrader no. Struck tools do not need to be hardened or tempered. They would lose their temper quickly from the heat of a hammer billet and having a hardened striking end would make it more likely to crack and send shrapnel at you. I just normalize and use
@seanshrader49225 жыл бұрын
