Just a bit of forging on a lovely fall day. Charcoal is used to first form an upset corner in half inch stock, then a tapered wedge is drawn out, one side perpendicular to the other. These are used to hold timbers and logs in many applications.

Heck, I'd watch it again. Great video showing the beginner how to clamp a log down to another log. It's nice when your logs stays still for a good trim.

I have watched few of your videos and I really like your work and especially the clever tools that need no electricity. It just seems so fantastic.

Very timely post. We were just talking about needing dogs at work today and the KZbin notification popped up on my phone. We are hewing pole rafters, and they are jumping all over. I found a set I'd made ten years ago, we'll see how they work tomorrow.

I didn't know that some people realize what a log dog is or how it is used. Nicely done.

Nice job forging those log dogs. In France we name them «clameau». Did the charcoal you used is homemade?

That is a somewhat unusual patern of anvil, almost like a London patern with less of a waist and a pritchell hole next to the horn. Many many anvils with a thicker waist and pritchel near the horn I have have seen have a pointed heel.

That hole in the anvil is what you could use to make a 90 degree bend in round stock or square! Mr Chickadee are you not making any more videos?

Nice video. Does that have a reason that you just flattened the brackets at the end? Because I know the braces that are rounded at the top.
@thomasarussellsr
@thomasarussellsr 7 жыл бұрын
Günter Schöne they are not brackets or braces. They are log-dogs, they are used to keep the top log from rolling around while you cut it. Others in previous videos were tie-downs to fasten the bottom timbers to hand-drilled holes in the stone foundation of one of his buildings. Those were brackets of sorts, but these are an old school clamp, so to say.

Just a round wood pile, been stacking that way over in Europe for many hundreds of years, saves space and no cover needed.

Not only does this man know what he's doing, but he also has probably been doing it more often than you. He has a firm grip on the material, he doesn't swing erratically, he can squint his eyes if the scale some one pops up to his face. That anvil is very old and has stood up to the tests of time and use, it's not like the thing will explode.
