A short documentary on Brighton's homeless.
The number of vulnerable people sleeping on our streets is at crisis level with over a quarter of a million homeless England. The country seems to turn a blind eye.
You can help, if you don't want to give money or food, give 5 minutes of your time. Sometimes all people need is a conversation with someone to help them feel normal again.
These people are like you and I, but in a desperate situation often from no fault of their own.
As the temperature's fall the number of rough sleepers continue to rise.
Please help to raise awareness. Something must be done.

I've seen a lot of these faces in & around Brighton and, I've also heard of people who (I've donated money to) have succumbed to the elements or the drink over the four years, I have lived in the city. The amount of homeless is nothing short of shocking and they state that "Brighton council only care about what the tourists think" and that is very true. They've built some £50million fucking eyesore on the coastline with the 'hope' of repaying that entire amount over the next 2 decades, why haven't they built a shit ton of housing for that cost? Why do they think each and every tourist/visitor will want to go up a stick and stand on a viewing platform and look at some shabby rooftops or some bleak skies across the Channel? Is that not arrogance or what? People in Brighton don't want to see these people on the streets and, I know an absolute monumental amount of folk that were totally against the "i360" being erected as the council needed to concentrate on the homeless epidemic, but oh no, it's all about the fucking tourists first. If Brighton Council are so against all these homeless people making the place look "dirty" then WHY not concentrate on tackling the rise in homelessness first? This country and Brighton bastard council make me sick, it's about money fucking money and not what really matters. I'm not rich by any means but, I will always put my hand in my pocket and give the odd fiver or few bob because I am humble and, I know what matters at the end of the day and that is looking after people that need attention. It's the people at the top that don't give two fucks and they are the people who need addressing and put in the places of these unfortunate folk to see how they would feel being left, forgotten and made to rot whilst the bastard at the top get richer. FUCK BRIGHTON COUNCIL. Thanks for the upload Hugo Healy and apologies for the cursing.

One of the problems is that homelessness is disproportionately high in Brighton because a lot of homeless people move there from elsewhere (that came from a homeless guy I used to buy tea for). Tourism is important but I fully agree that the council really needs to find a long term solution for homelessness that works.

Someone once said that the homeless can claim £45 per week despite no address. May be this is not transmitted to the homeless people. Can someone verify please? I feel sorry for all these people in bad weather esp. Yes, the UK government should look after it's own citizens, help them. Find them somewhere to stay at least. We are spending too much money helping others, illegals etc... Not right. Government gives out benefits to poor people, these people have nothing. Please help them.

Margot Torr .. no of course they don’t see, they get driven from home to the House of Commons in Chauffeur driven cars .. the only time you’ll see members of Parliament on the streets is when they’re campaigning for votes ... but, I must add, that people from the U.K. who are trying to save YOUR Elephants and Rhinos from poaching do a good job. If more of your people in South Africa/Africa cared enough about their wildlife, got of their backsides to save YOUR Elephants/Rhinos then there wouldn’t be the need for people[s] here in the U.K. to do the work YOU should be doing .....

People forget the reason there's such a big homeless problem in Brighton is because majority were homeless in other cities and CHOSE to go to Brighton to be around other homeless people. Pushing those who are actually from Brighton and homeless to the back of the line for help. More needs to be done in all cities, that way they won't just pile up in one specific area and cause charities who help so much struggle.

Same thing happening in San Francisc. The homeless flock there because of the weather and the services available all major cities are going to become tent cities. Wealthy looking out of their penthouse's observing the poor living on the floor or in tents on the streets. It's rich vs poor, and the poor are falling rapidly.

why on Earth would they throw these people's thing in the bin?? OK if you don't want them there, fine, but don't toss their tents, sleeping bags and belongings in the bin! it's all they have!! instead find them a way to sleep safely! :( I don't have the answers, but it just breaks my heart.

I enjoyed being homeless,I slept like a log( thanks drugs) in an exquisite pine plantation. But,I realised that it must have been tough when prison felt like a fancy hotel cos of the divine, long, hot showers. Ai,I can cry for these good people, they are misunderstood, many are in loads of pain and use drugs to just eliminate pain and real abuse and injustice from the equation.Lots dont yet know what they are actually dealing with . Respect and love to them.

The problem is with the Govt. Instead of putting together a system where all charities to add details to Govt data base of those struggling with homelessness, addiction issues, poverty etc.... how can you expect to help people. Alot of these charities actually know the people that come in and ask for help. What their situation is, their mental health etc... There is a need for "Specialized" housing for those with addiction issues, Mental health issues. Need for wrap around services, especially budgeting skills. Saw a report of a family struggling to pay their bills, but they had spent thousands on brand new furniture with little to no money coming in on Hire purchase. Definite need for more housing. the amount of money UK wastes on police, emergency services etc... far outweighs the cost if they built more housing for the homeless.

The furthest you can go in terms of housing is to get them into a room full of bunk beds, if you give them more thn that you are taking a piss on the ones who are working and paying their rents. There are homeless ppl who are really unfortunate but for most its just a series of bad decisions and not a single event. In an "ideal" world you would help those who are really unfortunate to the fullest extent and give the rest basic help, there needs to be some personal accountability.

Plymouth. There is nothing much here. If your homeless here you have a strong chance of getting beaten up. Brighton looks like heaven I am 100% coming here, there is nothing gay here only 2 pubs. I even told people on facebook there is a good chance i will end up dead but i will try. I would rather die trying then never tried at all. I have mental health problems too bipolar. I am not scared to die. I grow up in a homophobic situation and city. I hate it here. If you hear of someone hanging themself at the Brighton pier it would be me. I would rather die in Brighton then to die here any day. I am very upset writing this message but i have no choice to leave. There really is nothing here for me You know when i die i just want to be spread out on the Brighton pier please don't send me back here please. So upset writing this message but i have to come to Brighton. I will not die in Plymouth this homophobic city. Brighton is where i belong just Brighton

I have also been under a lot of stress lately but i hope it looks better. Even your comment saying go to Brighton made me feel better, like you cared about me. Thank you. I just don't feel loved where i am and i am so isolated but i am going to sell everything i have to go. You know i always think of that film home alone about how she did everything to get home. Plymouth is 100% a place not to be gay, i am not saying you will be killed but it is the version of Texas for understanding sexuality. I have never saw 2 men holds hands in my city and when others do they let their hands go because they feel ashamed. Brighton is my home and i am going to go i just want to feel excepted, loved and not judged by others. It kills me here and i don't even go out because of nothing being gay here. I just think people want me dead. I am so looking forward in coming. Maybe i can get a nice boyfriend that would treat me right instead of hurting me. Emotional damage can be just as bad.I just want to be loved. I never had it before. I hope my mental health will improve by being in a gay community and i believe a gay person being in a straight community where their is nothing gay is very very damaging. Thank you for messaging. Do you have any information on gay groups or homeless places to go or websites you can give me? Thank you.

This is what i have to do soon. I live in the south deep south. I live in a homophobic city and i feel angry/alone completely isolated where i live even tho i have a home here. If there is no gay community here i have no choice. I will do anything to leave my city and go homeless in Brighton. Just because i have a home don't mean to say i'm not isolated. If my city was excepting of gay people then i wouldn't have to move. I will even take a rope with me in case if things don't work out. I can't come back to my city when i leave this year. Even if i die in Brighton, at least i was there. I broke me writing this. I just feel so angry where i live. I'm so isolated here. I always wanted to be with the gay community where i feel wanted but i feel hated here. I feel broken that i have to leave my city and go homeless because there is nothing gay here. Just one pub and a dance place. People don't open up their sexuality where i live because most feel ashamed because it is what they have been told. Even if i die in Brighton i am still going. Then they can spread my ashes on the Brighton pier I will be here this year i will, even if it kills me. Try living in the southwest when your gay, it isn't good at all.

I have empathy for the homeless, but that one guy at 3:50 is a bit of an idiot. The guy complains about being homeless, yet refuses to sign a piece of paper that will allow him to get accommodation because it's "bullshit mate, they only want me to sign that paper so they can stick their nose into my life mate". What could they possibly look? He has no finances, can't claim benefits due to no address, probably doesn't have a bank account anymore. I would love him to expand on what he thinks they're going to look into in his life. He is being paranoid for no reason.

it,s strange for me, I have my own caravan and live in the UK with my cat. I pay to stay in a lovely part of the country. I worked from the age of 15 till I became unwell. I am struck by the homeless man who went through chemo, only to be put on the rubbish heap.. if I hadn't lost my home just before Covid, that led me to where I am now, I don't know where id be. Bless you. PEACE

Lived in Brighton for 4 years and so many people raved about how great it was, before i was about to move and I've gotta say, I've never been more disappointed with a city. It's an absolute divehole, filthy streets, with a severe drink and drug problem. I've been to places with a fair amount of homeless, but never anywhere where I've seen so many young homeless people, not that that makes it any better or worse, but it just really highlighted to me how big of a problem it is there. Massively overpriced to rent and that along with its drug culture is pushing far too many people to the gutter and sidelines of society there

No you can't claim benefits if you don't have mailing adress. Maybe government should changing rules for homeless people. They need our help. Any person should be treated like a piece of shit.

Start buying the homeless bivvy bags. Very popular in Australia, one person tent that rolls up to almost the size of a sleeping bag. So, it's very portable and easy to take down every day and easy for the homeless to carry around. They will be more expensive than cheap tents, but they shouldn't keep loosing them all the time.

We are able to end homelessness worldwide. We need to unite and start pressing government to free more funds for affordable housing. People for the people. We are here to help each other. My heart is broken every time when I see homeless person. God bless them with warm room and food.

I know that is old but stop giving food and clothing get this rich people to pay taxes Amazon could pay billions in taxes and y'all could have something like 2 SSI u nasty people like seeing people suffering and speak up and make videos about how expensive rent is so people can do something about and make affordable living and let them pay less then 300$ 500$ is still to expensive for affordable housing

Done 10 years trying to get my own place years ago, it's brutal, no one wants to live in hostels with the revolving door of criminals staying in them after jail sentences for stabbings, serious assaults, robbery and murder so people leave these places before they can even get a sniff of a place to stay.

The funny thing is I bet they're all in receipt of some sort of benefits yet they still can't afford to live on the streets don't have to pay rent, council tax, tv license, gas, electric and water. So where does their money go🤔🤔🤔 the ones on the streets with nothing at all are the ones I feel sorry for.

I don’t know if this is true but apparently the housing charities are suggesting that giving tents and money is making the issue worse because they won’t seek help if they have those things. They see it as enabling. I don’t profess to know enough about the deeper reasons behind the problem. BHT certainly suggest that we should not give money to the homeless
