I love these lists you do. Another great one here, with some great overlooked games! Not sure I'd say Thief is forgotten, but ah well. Outlaws, Elite Force II... such awesomeness. Interesting fact about Outlaws: it was only barely first to have a sniper rifle that zoomed as MDK came out 2 months after it with a zooming sniper rifle, and it also had fine adjustments at all zoom levels. Then Goldeneye 007 a few months after that, also with sniper zoom. 1997: the year of the zooming sniper rifles!

Medal of Honor 1 and 2. No one talks about how good they were for PS1 shooters. They were, in my opinion, the PS equivalent to GoldenEye and Perfect Dark.

I know, right? MoH 1 was one of the coolest games back then, especially when you land at the beach on D-Day. I guess they got overshadowed by Call of Duty or something.
@system-error
@system-error 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah! Although Timesplitters is the 'true' heir to GoldenEye because it has a similar feel, MOH was the GoldenEye of the PS1. That first game is a fucking masterpiece, so well made in every way. Feels like you're in a WWII movie, that same way Half-Life made you feel like you were in a sci-fi movie, and Resident Evil made you feel like you were in a horror movie. Glad to see the GVMERS documentary on MOH has hit 2m views, making it their top viewed video by a big margin! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJuWonR_oMeErZo

@@Coot yeah those GVMERS docs are all fantastic, it's one of the very top quality KZbin channels imo. I had a Ti 4200 and a crappy Dell monitor but that D-Day landing still knocked my socks off. This weekend I'm going to play it on a projector with a ten foot diagonal, it's going to be insane.

2:53 That isn't Elite Force 2, that is the original Elite Force. EF1 is a ST:Voyager game that was released in 2000 by Raven Software. EF2 is set after ST:Nemesis, and mainly involves the Enterprise-E. It was released in 2003 by Ritual Entertainment. They're both great fps games, especially if you're really into Star Trek, and they're both available for purchase on GOG.

SiN is my childhood and definitely one of my favorite FPS games next to Rise of the Triad. With SiN i just loved that world and it's characters... like you mentioned a kind of Robocop meets Judge Dredd... cyberpunk vibe. Loved it! It was neat how some levels had multiple exits and also these secret/hidden levels that you would have totally bypassed had you taken a different path. Very fun and memorable game. I will say it's a shame that it was rushed to compete with Half-Life because trying to run this game initially was quite a chore at least from what i remember, so many bugs... but i can look past all that and eventually they had come out with some mega patches that fixed a lot of it.

The reason SiN is forgotten is IMO Half-life. Half-life had fantastic weapons that never became obsolete and all carved out a niche for themselves, fantastic environmental story telling and scripted events that never blocked the players freedom of movement without obnoxious cut scenes, superb level design, excellent movement mechanics (a legacy of the Quake engine) and spawned excellent mods that people played for thousands of hours (counter-strike, team fortress classic, science and industry, day of defeat, natural selection). Half-life was a behemoth; you don't release an FPS game a month before Half-life and get remembered.
@elimalinsky7069
@elimalinsky7069 7 жыл бұрын
soylentgreenb There were also a lot of great FPSes that were releases at the end of 1998: SiN, Delta Force, Rainbow Six, Thief (not technically a shooter), Tribes and Tresspasser (also not technically a shooter and its grearness was rather questionable). They all had to compete with Half-Life, so many were overlooked because of just how awesome Half-Life was.
@barneyhooks7266

Your so Right, Half Life over shadowed Sin... That is the main reason it never reached the level of notirity it should have. Bad timing ! Besides, 1998 had All Gaints in FPS's along with Half Life & SIN , like Unreal & Tom Clancy games.......SIN didn't have a chance with such poor timing.

One of my hidden forgotten FPS gems is Shogo: Mobile Armor Devision by Monolith. This was a awesome slightly anime inspired shooter where you have 2 types of gameplay, one traditional shooter where you play a guy, and one where you are inside a huge mech which can transform, which still handled as a FPS shooter! I Loved the game and multiplayer was always fun.

terminator was a pretty good fps. came out in 1990 for dos machines. you played as either kyle or terminator and had to track down your opponent through l.a in free roam fashion. you could steal cars and shoot from them, run over innocent people or shoot them, get chased by the police, rob or buy from shops, rob banks which might lead the cops to chase you if you get caught. having street battles with kyle/terminator and the cops was really fun, even if they happened at the same time

What I like about most of the StarTrek games, is the originality they have. In defense of NOLF: Codename - Jack. It was supposed to be a stand-alone ADDON (DLC by today's standards), the point of which was to introduce another character and his POV) And, well... Monolith delivered. I, for one, was glad to return to the universe of NOLF) I think it is rather funny, maybe just a little bit less than original. Star Trek Elite Force (I, II) as I see it - very underrated games, clearly deserved much more attention at the time of their respective launches and afterrwards.

Just wanna talk about NOLF. I've got NOLF1, which is just as great as NOLF2, so... yeah, check that game out. Soundtrack to that game is awesome 70's fun! Also, the "sequel" was meant to be a "tie-in/run along side NOLF2" and was called Contract J.A.C.K. It was awful! Elite Force 1 is far superior than Elite Force 2, but that's my opinion. EF2 takes place back at Earth if I remember correctly. I remember having to walk around Starfleet Command. EF1 is for sure the Star Trek game FPS that people want. And had quite good MP as well! Ran off the Quake 3 engine.

NOLF1 & 2 are still some of my favorite FPS games of all time, especially NOLF2. I've been waiting for a sequel for ages. So the developers went on to making FEAR. My reaction was "Cool, but where is NOLF3?". Then came expansions... FEAR2... and even FEAR3 (although different developer). Never would I have thought 10 years ago that their new franchise would get a 3rd faster than NOLF..

Best of luck finding a copy. It shouldn't be to hard to find. Also great video by the way. Keep up the great work as always.

Nice Thief is great, though I wouldn't say it's that forgotten. As for my suggestion... that may require some thinking!

SIN wasn't really the first FPS to introduce 3rd person shooting. Duke Nukem 3D was, there's an option to switch from 1st person and 3rd person views. It's either F4 or F11

Tekwar, an FPS based on the book(s) of the same name by William Shatner. Hexen and Heretic of course. Witchaven. There was also a half decent game based on the Aliens films too, I think it was called Alien Trilogy and it was a DOS based FPS. The original PC based Alien Vs Predator was good. Then there's the console games like Brothers In Arms (original XBOX & PSP) and AVP on the Jaguar (looks really dated now). The best FPS is still Half Life for me. When I first got that game I'd just built myself a top spec Pentium II and could play it with the details maxed out. The opening credits are pure genius, playing as they do over in game footage of your trip to work in the research facility, that and the relatively seamless transition from one level to the next. It also boasted rudimentary interaction with NPCs and some levels allowed you to team up with NPCs. Although more recent games like Call Of Duty II, Call Of Duty 4 and Bioshock come very close.

Sin did not introduce "new features" including secondary weapon fire, third person view, drivable vehicles, or open levels. All of these had been done before in the FPS genre, for example by Blood and Shadow Warrior, and those were probably not the first ones either. Not sure what you mean by "destructible levels", but destructible walls and such had been done before as well.

What sucks about NOLF is that the rights are tangled by Warner Brothers, Activision, and 20th Century Fox, so it's impossible for a re-release
