Great video Ross. I know I’ll get to see old John running 👍. Red pliers rule😁

You're getting there. It's something how JD makes it so you pretty much can't cross-reference their stuff. I've found their bearings to be that way also.

You have a lot of irons in the fire Ross . Maybe you will find all the parts and get your JD combine running, time to take a break. Enjoy your Holiday, Family and friends. Merry Christmas to you and family.

Ross, we'd take our old parts with us and match up new ones. Can't depend upon the parts numbers matching mainly because JD did a lot of "number" changing.

Dad found out on 1969 95 when you ordered the combine new you had a choice on 2 different gas engine sizes , the 303 and 318. Dad's 95 had the 318 engine. You had all the horse power needed!!!

Idk if you already know about them but Steiner tractor parts online seems to have some parts for the 303 power unit I'm excited about this project and hope you get it going soon

You are close Ross. That engine was used in the gas 4010. The displacement of the gas 4020 was approximately 340 cubic inches. Since the 55 was introduced in 1947, 13 years before the last 730 two cylinder tractor rolled out the door, John Deere used a Hercules engine.

Hay Ross on the distributer you should pull the base plate ware the points mount to and get into the springs and weights for the advance to make sure they dont stick and they need to move easy. Also check the springs to make sure they are tight and not loose cause this will cause lots of problems for the engine. The ODD will kick in when you open it up ! LOL Bandit

Hay Charlie There is a long story about not putting video's up and over the last month I switched cable companies and havent been able to load a video yet because of a cable problem. Saying that when you see one pop up I got it figured out and the flood gate will open on video's from last year. Biggest problem is going to be trying to figure out how I'm going to get everything into video's that make sense, There will be a lot of editing to do ! LOL This is going to be fun ! Bandit

@@Art-ot2jn Been running them for 50 years and have never caught one on fire yet. For me I'd rather have a gas combine for easer winter starts and the fuel is cheaper too ! Bandit

OK. I understand. I was just worried that something had happened to you or that you just decided to quit. You were one of the very first people I started watching on KZbin a few years ago, and I always enjoy your videos and consider you a good friend. We're a lot alike in many ways. Oh by the way (teaser alert) - I just bought another White/Oliver tractor - this one is very rare. I'm buying it off a friend, but it probably won't make it here for a while, as I recover from my recent surgery. I'll do a video on it. This one is very rare and the price was right. Stay tuned. Looking forward to you getting videos up when you get things figured out. Merry Xmas! @@banditfarmer1900

Good video Ross. You just can't trust those parts books or the numbers in them anymore. We always took the old parts to matchup. But hey, you're making progress and that's all that matters. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the ole 55.

Ross, It would have been more fun to have just filed the points, put the new rotor in, and fire it up with Grandpa's parts. JD is like Ford, they always guard letting people know what they could use to replace what their book says. Get that other 303 running, adapt a 5-speed transmission behind it, and put it in that Chicken House pickup. If you are going to work on making it run then you should do a repaint on it. That would make the Junky Deere guys drool so much you would have to install drainage ditches around it.

The fun of part matching something that you have no way of knowing if it was correct in the first place, or did they run out of what they needed and say "That will work for now."
@utahbrumley747311 ай бұрын
Great video! The more I see your combine, more I'm convinced it will run and once again be usable! I just don't see any major deterioration. My father and I got to talking about the straw walkers. We both wondered since they look to made of sheet metal, if one could be fabricated without major work. We both have experience in metal fab; I wonder if 18 gauge is same as what JD used. A local farmer who used to be around here; sadly no longer with us, has two combines that look like your's. Going to try and get a closer look at them to see if there 55 models; may be good parts units if you end up needing something you don't have. I looked at my agri-services catalog out of curiosity to see if they had any wiring harness's for a JD 55 and they do! So, if you end up needing major wiring they should have it. Noticed the distributor cap problem; i got into the same thing on a replacement; that center graphite was much bigger than original. Not sure if that's updated design or not. On mine it just seemed to depress down more on the center tang of the rotary button. Keep it up, can't wait to see it fire up! I would be not surprised with the engine running if majority of the inner workings engaged and freed up. The grain tank looked solid! I'd used POR pain if it were me; at least they advertise its supposed to stop rust lol. I'm guessing it has hydrostatic trans. Excellent video, give it two weeks and I bet you have running!

Why don't new coils fit the bracket? Well, obviously, they are bigger! The next question is, why are they bigger?! Just ran into this a couple weeks ago working on a Farmall 400. Luckily, I found an original IH coil that fits the bracket and, and works!

You are trying to revive another combine in the winter.... it just shows you never learn🤣🤣 On the flip side I've been laying on the steel floor of my tmr waygon welding a new liner in. Boy! Does that suck the body heat away. 🙄

Hey Ross... that is a 303 Hercules engine.... John deere used this engine on combines and Cotton pickers.... the John Deere 4010/4020 would have used the 369 Hercules engine... the 45 combine had a 217 Hercules engine
