Forgotten Junkyard Mustang Will it START

I decided to do a video on this forgotten 1967 Ford Mustang GT manual v8 car with only 26 thousand original miles on the clock. This car was originally owned my a drag racer up North but ended up being purchased by a kid in high school 5 years after it was new. That kid held onto it for his whole life going through many stages of restoration to its current almost finished stage it is currently in. Unfortunately the guy passed away before he could ever enjoy the fruits of his labor and since he passed the car has been sitting collecting dust, but leave it up to me to get her running again and cleaned up.

Dont replace the hood with a repro, get it repaired by a good panel beater and keep it original.

How can that be an original hood if it went from driver to drag racer to driver. (First driver because I doubt the come out of the factory as a drag racer)

Even if its not the original hood delivered on the car, going back to street use the hood that is on it, was acquired and installed in period, and would have been Ford manufactured, not a currently made China sourced stamping. No, it may not be the 'original' hood delivered on the assembly line, but it would be original Ford source. It is also possible that when set up as a race car, the actual original steel hood was removed and a light fiberglass hood installed, and when sold for conversion back to street use, the actual original hood re-installed. Much we may never know. As people die off, the stories die with them.

Michigan it's from Michigan. me and my uncle Danny built this car back in 1978 and we raced it both on the street and at Martin u.s. 131 speedway just a few miles south of Grand rapids .Dan sold the car in 83-84 to fund another build and we lost track of it .we were running a old late fifties model modified 292 truck block in it and was pulling low 13s at first then added a better cam set up and gearing using a Dana 411 .it got us in the 12s. The engine and drivetrain were swapped out for our new race car a black 67 gt Shelby replica which we still have in storage today waiting for one of his sons to take up an interest in it. It's great to see this old girl again I knew it was her the moment I seen her you don't forget your first love and I spent so many hours keeping her up to par for every weekend. My uncle has long passed on now and I wish he was alive to see his car was still going strong .kind of brings a year to my eye to see it again .if I remember right it was so long ago but there should be signs of welding work by replacing passeger side front strut tower and repaneled rear lowers. I got to ask you know ,"is it for sale by any chance ? Thank you .

Love the story, looks like it was a factory Dark Moss green 390 4 speed car, super desirable! Both me and my father bought our mustangs in high school and still own them, Were getting our '67 GT 390 4 speed fastback back on the road and I'm finishing the restoration on my own '67 GT, glad to see it running again!!

The blue coating on the tire's lettering is a protectant applied by the tire manufacturer. It should be scrubbed off to reveal the bright white lettering which would look period correct. What a very nice car, low miles and a real decent example of one of the most iconic early Mustangs- the '67. It was the best looking, with the best looking interior- in my personal opinion! I'd love to own it!

That car is beautiful!... The best way to get the holes in the carpet for the seats and belts, if accessible, is to heat a phillips screwdriver up with a torch, and shove it through the bolt hole. I do it all the time, and it makes a perfect hole. The right way to do the hood would be to straighten it, scan the paint for the correct formula, and paint it and blend the tops of the fenders, then clear all of the three panels. The same goes for the sail panels. Blend the bad spots and clear the whole shell. It's a lot of work, but if you just try to blend the bad spots, you'll eventually get a 'halo' around the repair. The car is definitely worthy of the work.

Man! Thanks for bringing back some great memories. When I was 16 years old in 1972, a friend had a 68 GT. Someone had swapped in a 390 2 barrel. It had a 4 speed and I don't know what rear end gears, but it was a posi. It would lift the left front tire when he speed shifted into second. And would even chirp the wide oval tires when he banged fourth. The car was gunmetal gray with a black vinyl interior. Such a beautiful car! I always wanted one but had to wait until I could afford it. I'm still waiting! LOL

My Dad had a 67 GT 390 4Spd Acapulco Blue with a 4 barrel carb in 91, he restored it himself, I was like a 5th grader, that thing was bitchin. No leg room, all transmission tunnel ha. The engine bay was just packed with that big block. Just a monster of a car, he could chirp the tires anytime.

I agree with all those who are urging you to keep all parts on the car original. Have the hood and any else that needs to be repaired, repaired versus replaced.

I bet that Mr Gasket shifter is straight out of the 60s or early 70s. It looks old-school for sure. What a cool car. I used to own a 1965 Mustang coupe and 1968 Mustang coupe, both with 289-2Vs and the C4 auto (unfortunately- I would have loved a 4-speed car) and seeing this one really makes me miss my old ones.

The purpose of the vents in the back seat is if you open them and open the vent windows in the front it creates “comfort air flow” which is shown in the owners manual

Hey Dave.. great video, brings back memories of my 65 fastback..same color. NEVER should have gotten rid of her (or my 57 chev BelAir (blk,red int, 3spd 283), 2 1962 Porsche 356'S) OMG, Are we stupid when we are kids!!! PLEASE, ALWAYS tighten both battery cables!! I managed a big auto , truck & marine electric shop back then, COUNTLESS alternators, starters and elect. components were ruined (& subsequently rebuilt by us) by a thing as simple as a loose battery cable clamp! LOOSE CLAMP = HIGH RESISTANCE which is read by the regulator as a dead battery.. therefore, the alt. goes to full charge (15+v.) which kills the alternator & regulator, cooks the battery; then the starter tries to pull 100_150 A, but because of the increased resistance due to the loose clamp, pulls 200 to 250 A (Higher resistance = lower voltage= higher A.)& kills the battery & starter. SIMPLE TEST FOR LOOSE CLAMP.. grasp clamp firmly and twist as hard as you can.. if it moves, IT'S not tight enough!!

I believe a good body man could repair that hood and get it to line up. Would definitely do this before getting "aftermarket" replacement hood. So I am agreeing with other posters here.

Cool old car! I’m an old car fan and back when I lived in Ca., I almost bought a 1968 GT Fastback, light green in color. I miss out on that one. I never really looked to buy one after that! I wish I had bought it though! My Sister had a real nice 67 coupe! Love these old Mustangs!

Don't replace the hood just yet. Take her to a good body shop and hear what they recommend. If that's an original Mustang hood it's worth a lot. It's amazing what a professional body man can do. I'd also check the paint code on her. If that's the original color then keep it. If it's been changed I'd think about repainting her to I believe it was called Hunter Green (Bullitt Mustang). You never mentioned what engine is under the hood. If it's a 390 then DEFINITELY consider transforming her into the Bullitt Mustang. That's what Steve McQueen had. 1967 Mustang GT Fastback, 390 ci, 4 speed. You can name your price. Many would cut off their left nut to get her.

I'm actually in the same position as the guy who passed without driving his restored Mustang. I have a 1971 fastback which I've upgraded to a Boss 351. Since I'm from Alberta Canada I had to weld in new floors and replace many panels to complete the rebuild which has been going on for many many years and time does get away from you, But now I'm close, the running gear is in the whole car has been redone with rebuilt Cleavland motor/trans/rear end, every hose, line, tube, suspension, brake part, interior carpet, lights, upholstery ram air hood, with carb hookups and on and on. we are at air conditioning seat replacement and a million little thing to button it up, god willing I live long enough to see it. I purchased this car in 1976 the day my oldest son was born he is now 42 years old, so at 70 I have to be concerned. When it is finished and I can no longer use it, it goes to my oldest son who has been helping me.

In the back you’re missing the trap door. When installed it opens with a prop handle in the trunk so you can put long stuff in like skis, as per the owners manual.

And you do not wanna drill through carpet! Unless u like unwinding string from your drill bit. Poke a nail thru and cut a hole with utility knife or razor blade. Been there done that before. U will probably ruin your carpet with a drill

Sooo the car was never in a junkyard, until you put it in yours. And it was never forgotten about, until you left it to set in your shop for 3 years. The stainless trim on the hood could be straightened & buffed out.

That's not just a V8, that's an S code 390 car. I have an S code coupe. If you knew the value of that car, you might take it more seriously. 67 is the first year for the big block in the Mustang. Ford made the car bigger (just barely) to fit it. And along with the others, fix, don't replace that hood.

Oh and since thats a flat tappet cam, make sure you have the correct oil with the zinc additive.

For future reference you should have some exhaust installed before starting (especially in cold weather) so you don't warp the engine valves.

That mustang is the same color as the one that I had and my car had a c strip on the sides. Mine had a 302 with a 3 speed in the floor bought it new it was a GT with the GT wheels and the small hubcaps with the GT in the center. widen the wheels with 2” bands on the outside and 2 1/2 on the inside and had it setting low no body had one like it the next year everybody had there 68 mustangs with 3 to 4” on the out side and had them jacked up in the back with long shackles hanging down and looked like crap.

What makes you think it's a gt, because of the gas cap? One thing it doesn't have that a gt would have is the grooved rear panel around the gas cap is the. I owned a gt 67 fastback and it had the brushed aluminum interior with an overhead console.
