I love the living history of the UK that's survived in the public with enthusiasts, anachronists, societies, those who preserve sites, etc. Those who keep that history alive along with its aesthetics, giving a depth to such places that really is wonderful. Do other European countries care so much for history as the UK does? I have no sense of it from my vantage point in North America, not tied into the media of other languages. I'm troubled by some modern attitudes that seem to treat the past as some kind of dark age before reason, that our history is rather contemptible while new forms are imposed on society top-down through social engineering. They often drape themselves in a mantle of progress, but really deliver alienation, exploitation, unchallenged assumptions that are neither time-tested nor reasonable. This makes my heart ache.

Dear Chris, I adore history and have just found your videos, love the enthusiasm, I am particularly interested, due to researching my ancestry, I am absolutely gobsmacked as to who I am related, apart from the Plantagenets, the Conqueror, I am related to Sir Walter Blount, 16th great grandfather, Archibald Douglas, 14th great granduncle, Sir Richard Venables, 17th great grandfather and Sir Richard Vernon 18th great grandfather, it pains me to think of these people being killed in such a cruel manner, I have come across equally awful events, of my great grandfathers against other great grandfathers, murdering each other, If you have not looked into your ancestors, I think it would be a good idea, I am astounded and highly recommend that you do so, enjoy the videos, look forward to watching more, now I am even more interested, history is amazing, by the way the doctor who helped the future Henry V was John Bradmore, a surgeon and metal worker, he used honey and alcohol, with a specially designed surgical tool to extract arrow heads, thank you so much for bringing these historical events to life, love the what ifs

Very interesting Chris. If you ever have the will or time to educate me on the history of Leeds in a particular moment in time, I'd be most grateful? I read recently that during the civil war there was a big battle around Meanwood Beck in Leeds. Some historians believe that there is a mass grave there somewhere, though it cannot be proved as yet as I understand. I know I should do my own research but time constraints forbid me. Best wishes. The recent Netflix film "The King" was inspired by Shakespeare, so isnt meant to be historically accurate. In the film, Hotspur decides to rebel against Henry IV, with the King having disowned the heir apparent, "Hal". On the day of the battle the Prince challenges Hotspur to single combat in lieu of entire armies fighting. Credit where its due, the duel is really well choreographed and reminds the viewer of the brutality of mediaeval combat. However, while Hotspur does die, the Prince comes off without a scratch. Our perception of Henry V is limited but he was a scarred man, and here the scars are completely absent. I strongly do recommend the film though it's a lot of fun. King Henry V is played by Timothée Chalamet aka Peachf--ker. Its also a bit funny to me, but the father, Henry IV is played by Ben Mendelsohn, who has also played George VI elsewhere. Once again, thank you, for an amazing video and for teaching us the true history that most of us would have ignored. Quick question, is it true that Henry IV was the first Norman King of England to have English as his mother tongue?
@TheHistoryChap Жыл бұрын
I think you are right on that last point (but it might have been his father, Henry IV).

What if Henry had lived another 15 years and the queen had bore him more male children. "Henry Percy, 'Hotspur', is one of Shakespeare's best-known characters. In Henry IV, Part 1, Percy is portrayed as the same age as his rival, Prince Hal, by whom he is slain in single combat. In fact, he was 23 years older than Prince Hal, the future King Henry V, who was a youth of 16 at the date of the Battle of Shrewsbury." From "Henry Percy (Hotspur) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" Shakespeare's vivid Histories should not be relied upon for factual accuracy; especially when they contradict Dramatic counterpoint.

Love your rendition of the battle. I do, however have one reservation. Your pronounciation of the name of the town. I know thatit is old hat, I cannot help it, tis the way I was brought up coming from a family that still resides in a village not more than a couple of miles from Battlefield (in fact, it was on your map). I ask you, how do you pronounce the word shewn? It was popular at railway stations. As in "All passes or tickets must be shewn". Just saying! My mother always said that you pronounced it like the poisonous rodent if you were from the other side of the river. :-) Anyhoo! Love the vids, keep 'em up. Oh! Have you done so or felt the the inclination to explain the reasons that Admiral Doenitz' Baton is in the Regimental Museum at the Castle, in Shrewsbury? Cheers Ian

Most locals and Shropshire people in general pronounce it the same as Chris, possibly because we see it on road signs etc, and read it phonetically. Newsreaders traditionally say "Shroews-bury", but they too are starting to give up and go phonetic.

I'm also reading some books about Henry IV and V and 'A Bloody Field by Shrewsbury' by Edith Pargeter. And Shakespeare. I remember doing Henry IV Part 1 for O level. Strewth, now that's what I call a plot and a half. A very good production although the plot, nomatter how you explained it, was most complex. I respectfully recommend that the different forces be 'Colour coded ' for easier reference. I lost the plot at around 6 mins, and I love history. So, cutting to the chase.. .this was just a case of a delinquent debt. Non of the opposing parties could sort it out so they had a great big battle which ruined a perfectly good crop of peas. On a side note....English Archers have been Acclaimed to have been the medieval equivalent to the Maxim Machine gun. Brilliant production, way above my simple level of grasp. High 5s.

As a Shrewsbury resident it was good to hear this rendition of the battle of Shrewsbury. Having watched your work I know you like to be precise with details however in this instance I think you may have made a mistake . You keep pointing out where Prince Hal got hit by an arrow as to being on the LEFT of his nose, he was actually hit to the right of his nose which was proven in the video by the portrait of Hal - he was only ever drawn in profile on his left side. Because of the damage to the right side by the arrow and the battlefield surgery.
@TheHistoryChap9 ай бұрын
I beg to differ. In the surgeon, John Bradmore's, own writing. He describes the wound as on the left. I quote (the English version rather than Latin)..."struck in the face with an arrow beside the nose on the left side." from John Bradmore "Philomena".
@unklejon46909 ай бұрын
@@TheHistoryChap Touché , however , whilst Bradmores opinion has to be taken into account, he was after all the kings surgeon who did the amazing operation, there exists a body of opinion that Bradmore was speaking from his own perspective which as we all know from experience reverses the wound site. I.e. if you look at someone with a mark on the right side of their face, you would be most likely to later describe that mark as on the left as it appears to you., (mirror image), this is a fact that the police are always facing in witness statement even today. This argument is further supported because in any portraits of King Hal thereafter he is always seen in left profile. As is evidenced in your own video. Profile painting was not the fashion in those days. However we could argue that artists were known to “flatter” their sitters. If that however were the case why not simply show the king in a normal pose and flatter him even more. I think in the lack of physical evidence, we have as they say, an enigma, wrapped in a puzzle

Fantastic account, you've earned my subscribe. In the end I am reminded of stories about when Alexander was separated from his men and left to fight alone until relieved, or delays that befell austro hungarian communications in the days and hours after Ferdinand was assassinated. How much of history is determined in these tiny moments? It certainly seems proper to deem some things "acts of God" with that in mind.
@TheHistoryChap3 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for your support Luke. Here is another one of those moments: During the Peasants Revolt at the beginning of Richard II's reign, the mob stormed the Tower of London (yes, really!), seized a teenage Henry Bollingbroke and were going to kill him. Only a priest saved his life. If he had died at the hands of the mob, he wouldn't have usurped the throne, become Henry IV or been at Shrewsbury!

Excellent commentary and history memories! Reminds us what barbarians prior Brits. with power really were and the lengths they would go ro regardless of loss of life of their countrymen to cling to power! Once again I assert Oliver Cromwell was an exceptional hero for the downtrodden and overtaxed ordinary folk during that period! History also shows us that hardly anyone with a crown had a rightful claim to royal descent!

I agree with you about Cromwell. He was stern in his leader ship, magnanimous to surrendered enemies and, like George Washington, refused any suggestion of being a king. His Irish reputation is slightly undeserved After Drogheda surrendered to him, some very stupid Irishmen fired on the English victors. In the rules of warfare at the time, this was regarded as especially treacherous, and permitted the victors to retaliate with a brutal sack and massacre.

A very good account of the battle and its legacy. Unfortunately you did not make it clear that Roger Earl of March ( brother of Sir Edmund Mortimer ) had been killed in Ireland in 1398 and that his son and heir was still only a boy. That the Mortimers had a claim to the throne is clear, but it was not necessarily superior to that of the Lancasters - it involved descent through the female line, which might be seen to limit or negate it, as well as the fact that Richard II appears to have been not consistent in which of his relatives he saw as his heir - the lines of Mortimer, Lancaster or York all appear to have enjoyed his favour at one point or another. Furthermore the assembly which recognised Henry IV as King in 1399 could justifiably be seen as able to ratify ( not bestow ) his accession. Henry’s “usurpation” was a very constitutional transfer of the kingship. I look forward to viewing other of your presentations.
