Yes the dramatic iconography selected from completely independent historical uses and the dominating cut of the uniforms are what keep the Third Reich as absolute top villains, all this plus the easy to grasp apparent simplicity of a precise orderly organisation. A lot of it looks reprised for the Empire and First Order in Star Wars. It is so graphic and easily recognised it is becoming a bit of a cheat in many movies so you don't need to create new iconic villainous organisations from scratch.

Dr. Felton I used to think I knew a solid amount about the war until I found your channel before my freshman year of college. You rekindled my interest in WWII, and gave me inspiration to genuinely study the subject, specifically the deterioration of the Wehrmacht. By cross referencing various data archives regarding fielded manpower, O found that the Wehrmacht fielded only 1/2-2/3 of their strength at the beginning of 1945 by Germany’s surrender. An overwhelming majority of those casualties were POWs, as the frequent overextension of the frontlines created several opportunities for encirclements. This was compounded by Hitler’s refusal to retreat, which was the same thing that got almost a million Axis troops killed or captured following the tide turning defeat at Stalingrad. Anyway, I haven’t read any of your books yet, but I definitely plan to. I happily binge watch your content, and I imagine that your books contain even more detail. Keep on inspiring people to dig deeper into what I believe really was the greatest hour of the greatest generation.

I remember reading a book on Soviet auto culture, it said that many of these war trophies ended landing their owners in hot water as Stalin turned the screws on anyone who was seen to been under too much western influence in the political crackdowns in the immediate post war. They also noted that after a few years parts became unobtainium. The former is probably anecdotal, but it was a hyper paranoid regime.

Dear Dr Felton, dear Mark, an interesting collection and an interesting story. Plaese allow me a few remarks. 1. The 540 K may very well have been owned once by Goebbels, however your statement on the 500 and 540 K as being the lead cars for the NSDAP top isn't wholly correct. Most cars until 1938 were of the 770 type. There was indeed a small series 0f 500 parade cars for the Reichskanzlei you mentioned. Even with a fully open body, so without a heavy duty hood and roll up windows, the sheer weight made the cars under powered, and no further examples were built. They were replaced by the new 770K introduced in 1938 which were available as Open Tourer, F- Cabriolet, D-Cabriolet and Pullman Limousines. These chassis could also better handle even further added weight when armour plating, which increasingly was in demand, was fitted. BTW, Hitler preferred to sit next to the driver and that seat was always made especially comfortable to his requirements. 2. The Horch shown is a standard bodied type 853 convertible produced by Gläser in Dresden, however Goering's car was a spiffy 2/3 seater roadster bodied by Erdmann & Rossi, and this is not that car. 3. Most NSDAP bigwigs rode in Mercedes, but there was also the Maybach DS8 Zeppelin with a V12 8 litre engine, and for instance Heinrich Himmler and Dr Julius Dorpmuller preferred that car over the 770's.. Thank you for your excellent series which I follow with great interest, being a university taught historian myself! Kind regards, Dr Robert Geelen

Thank you very much Mark for a most informative video and I'd like to repay the favour if I may (as best as my now 70yr old memory will allow). The section about Mercedes 540s reminded me of a story told to me about 50yrs ago by a elderly friend of mine at the time, the late Rod Searle who, amongst other things was the honorary curator of sailing ships at the Melbourne Museum here in Victoria, Australia. Rod was though, interested in more than sailing ships and told me that he had once bought a plastic kit of a Mercedes 540 (I think) and he wanted to 'super detail' it, i.e. add additional features that the original car had had but that the model lacked. So to do this he wrote to Mercedes Benz in (West) Germany and asked if they could send him a copy of the plans of the vehicle. He received a very courteous reply that went approximately thus - "Dear Mr Searle, Thank you for your letter and we would normally be delighted to send you a copy of the plans you have requested. However, our factory was bombed very heavily during the war and amongst the areas that were destroyed was our plans room". A British friend of Rod's was driving him to work a few days later and Rod told him the story. The friend was silent for few minutes then said "I don't know how to tell you this Rod but I was flying one of the Lancasters that blew the place to pieces!". Rod told me that it three days before he could speak to his friend!

Mr Felton. I wanted to tell you a few things I’ve noticed on those cars you pointed out. 1 that 80 percent Mercedes 540k is more like 65 percent. The paint on the fenders looks to have been done with a paintbrush by a Russian ogre with no idea how to paint. I would rate that car a 6 out of 10 just cause it’s running. But the Gobbels car honestly would need to be taken back to bare metal and painted properly by a guy who knows what he’s doing. The Horch is definitely looking good there, that’s a solid older restoration that with a bit of shining up and some buffing would definitely be a looker, 9 out of 10 .Now the Borman car looks like hell to be honest with you. It’s missing the front bumper, the front panels are anything but straight and it looks like it was crashed into something from the front. That’s a 4 out of 10 car. Overall they all probably need some going over, but those 2 Mercedes’ need significant work. The 540k needs a full paint job done by a professional restorer, some of those little parts might need assistance but a good proper paintjob and that’s an easy 7 figure car ( not because of its infamous owner but due to rarity) The Borman car would need extensive work, many of its parts like bumpers are gone. Those are very difficult to nigh on impossible to locate and Mercedes themselves or a real professional auto restorer might have to actually make many of the parts to do it properly. The 540k painted properly is an easy multimillion dollar car as is the horch, this does not take into accounts their original owners ( that might increase or potentially decrease the value) Not sure on the alleged Borman car haven’t seen many big prewar to war era Mercedes like that

What`s ironic is a lot of those could simply be rebuilt using new parts, assuming they still have the designs for them. The only real difference being the MFG date, I doubt it would cost millions to do so either.
@matthewcaughey88983 жыл бұрын
@@gamerxt333 cars this historic in the circles they trade in would accept nothing less then OEM. With these cars, that’s the difference of its worth millions, or going for 6 figures cause you cheaped out. If I had one of those cars my goal would be restore it and sell it at auction for an obscene amount of money. Then go buy whatever I wanted and buy and build a garage to keep it in

Hi Mark great as always and very interesting concerning the Nazi Reich cars. Just a point of correction here - the vehicle is in fact an Auto Union (now AUDI) Horch. Auto Union carried on manufacturing their cars until the mid 1970s - +. Horch was also used as a name for a battle field vehicle used by the German Wehrmacht to tow small to medium anti tank guns and artillery pieces and their crews.
