The trouble with it was ( and I was there watching it at the time) that it was not as funny as the Young Ones. It was not as funny as the Dangerous Brothers. It was not as good as New Statesman. It was not even as good as Happy Families that Ade did on his own, with each of the rest of the young ones cast including Rik popping up in various episodes. It was utterly panned and destroyed by every critic of all kinds at the time as well. But I watched it simply because it was Rik and Ade. You could see what was happening, that they were trying to find a new show as good as the Young Ones. This was a bit of a misfire. They went away and came back with Bottom which was way funnier and has become an utter classic. And eclipsed Filthy n co...sadly. I do remember being excited and made up that the cool stripey grey red / black / white wallpaper they have in the living room was the same as I had picked for my bedroom. I had that wallpaper! And looking at it now, it was soooo 80s. And I was not into following the trends and fashions of the era at that time....maybe I was cooler than I thought....

Two forgotten British Sitcoms I'd like to see you cover - Comrade Dad - An 80's sitcom starring George Cole set in a Britain that's been invaded by the USSR. Cole's character is loyal to the soviet overlords and tows the party line. A Small Problem - Another 80's sitcom starring the actor who played Mike in The Young Ones. This is set in a quassi- apartheid like Britain that sends people below 5 Ft to go and live in tower blocks. It was supposed to be a critique of Apartheid, but the joke missed a lot of people.

New statesman video soon 🙏 was rewatching that recently and forgot how good the Norman/Norma character is. A trans character back then and aspects of trans existence like HRT being mentioned along with the maybe regretable aspects of some of the ways the character was played for laughs... very interesting.

I'd LOVE to cover New Statesman! I've even got the B'Stard File book! I'm almost certainly going to do it for Rik May next year. There's a lot to discuss [4 series, the different supporting characters in series 1, the specials, the move to EU parliament in series 4 etc.], so it would be a long video! Yeah the Norman/Norma stuff is really fascinating. It's certainly not perfect trans representation, but it's not bad either. It certainly dispels the belief that they didn't exist before 2016! The fact they cut that AND Sarah's lesbian affair after series 1 leads me to think that they were asked to by itv or something

At the time, because it starred Rick Mayall and Ade Edmondson, it was an automatic draw for us teenagers going into our 20's, simply because it was so different to the usual, run-of-the-mill sitcoms that were put out by the BBC. In retrospect, of course, the various references to what were the stalwarts of light entertainment, haven't aged too well, especially if you're not of age to remember them, but over all, it was good enough to want to watch again. The episode with, 'The Noles', in and the mediocre, 'Ooh-err, sounds a bit rude', quiz show parody of Blankety Blank, complete with, 'celebrities', (each one of which was a parody of a well-known celeb at the time), were probably the best of the 6 that were made. They kind of left the last episode open-ended, but I think they knew it had served its purpose of keeping them in the limelight between The Young Ones and Bottom.

Good video. Another reason for this show's cancellation was probably down to the number of complaints the BBC received regarding the over the top violence/killing milkmen in the "Dead milkmen" episode. As far as i can tell that episode was never properly aired again because of that. I was lucky growing up as my folks had recorded it off the telly onto vhs. A very humourless, literal look at comedy. Excellent comedy at that. The attack on family entertainment and family entertainers hit too close to home. That's the main reason it was canned. The picture of BBC TV centre as a nest of skirt chasing, boozed up, smug, ugly, middle aged gits (like Jimmy Saville and Rolf Harris, etc) made the higher ups uncomfortable. I agree with you. It is underrated, and this is a sub-standard video.
@EnchantedEssays
@EnchantedEssays 3 ай бұрын
I must admit that I'm quite confused by your comment. Reviews are about two things: what I think of the show and who I would think would like it. I gave my honest opinion: I enjoyed the show and I thought it was messy, agreeing with Mayall that it was "rushed" and "went into the studio too early". Just because something is underrated doesn't make it perfect. You can enjoy something and not consider it perfect. My opinion is not incorrect because I don't have exactly the same one as you, nor is yours because it isn't the same as mine. I also made it very clear that, as I am only 26, I am not familiar with much of what they are parodying and stated that I think this is funnier to those who remember what light entertainment was like at the time. I mean, as far as I can tell, that genre and style of light entertainment has been dead almost as long as I have been alive. I know of no evidence to suggest that the series was canned. The continuity announcer said that it would come back for another season, which was news to Nigel Planer and Adrian Edmondson according to an interview at the Slapstick Festival in 2018. All actual evidence I have read and heard indicates that Elton and/or Mayall were the ones to pull the plug on the show. Ben Elton literally said that writing that show was "the most unhappy experience of [his] life"! I highly recommend reading the interviews in this book to learn more: www.wob.com/en-gb/books/roger-wilmut/didn-t-you-kill-my-mother-in-law/9780413173904#GOR001243988

I preferred Filthy, Rich and Catflap over The Young Ones. While the slapstick humour was similar, The Young Ones had more of the gross humour that I don't really find funny, it seems targeted towards teens and uni students. I thought it was hilarious when I was a teenager, but as I got older it just comes across as cringey. I guess I also preferred their characters, Richie Rich was funnier than PRick, Eddie was funnier than Vivian and Filthy was funnier than Neil.

Good old FR&C - I would rent the entire series on VHS nearly every other time I went to the video shop when I was a kid 😂 and I eventually acquired the 2 well worn cassettes in the sell-off when Blockbuster moved in next door and put them out of business. I’m a child of the 80s so I understand the gags and references even though some of it was before my time, I was always a fan of older TV. I think if we are totally honest, it’s a fun series but noticeably weaker than both the Young Ones and Bottom; there were obviously plans to make a second series (Filthy makes reference to it in a 4th wall break in the last episode) but I’m kind of glad they didn’t, I don’t think there was mileage in it for another 6 episodes.

Just think, at some point Ben Elton & co must’ve concluded that the _occasional_ breaking of the fourth wall in The Young Ones would be so much funnier if a show did it with greater frequency… or indeed all the bloody time in fact. 🙂 ‘Catflap is by no means irredeemable of course but the irritating smugness permeating all six episodes, the cast constantly gurning at the camera plus a relative dearth of genuine laughs can make it a tough watch at times. An interesting curio but, for me at least, not a patch on ‘Young Ones sadly.

@@EnchantedEssays It was not popular at the time. It really wasn't, sadly. What you have to remember is it was not long after the Young Ones. And it was no where near as good compared to that, and that is all it was compared to at the time. The audience did not take to it and there was way less buzz, and endless bad reviews. To us youngsters (not so young now) Rik and Ade were cool and so funny, and so we watched, and were upset it was not as good as the Young Ones. It just failed for many reasons, but not down to the efforts of Rik and Ade. When you watch Bottom, you can see those characters could be Rik and Viv, just in their 30s, and it could be where they had ended up, at the Bottom of the pile, hating their lives and existence and so miserable, and yet still together as no one else could stand being around them long....It felt like an older version of the Young Ones without Neil and Mike, and it evolved steadily over its run with the writing improving...The episode with them stuck on the Big Wheel, or when the flat is broken into....and Eddie tapes one of the robbers to the kitchen ceiling...priceless...

Loved Filthy, Rich and Catflap, just a shame the original DVD release was so butchered due to copyright issues. I'd say the even more forgotten series post Young Ones was Ben Elton's 1985 series "Happy Families" which was written as a vehicle for Jennifer, Dawn and Ade but has a very extensive cast list of Young Ones Alumni (Rik appears as a Priest in 1 episode). The only thing anyone remembers about it these days is that the money the BBC set aside for a second series of Happy Families was used by Paul Jackson to fund the first Series of Red Dwarf

Ahh Happy Families...I remember that. I was still at school and we all loved it, we were in hysterics laughing at it and Ade Edmondson was just like a God to us, and Rik was like God+. I recently found it on You tube and watched it for the first time since it aired, and I was not that impressed. Its all over the place with the writing and tone. Ade is as funny as ever playing his usual dimwit character, but for a change its a nice one and not a violent nutcase. All the other cast is incredible, its like a who's who of the 80s. Everyone from the Young Ones pops up, then there is Chris Barry, Fry and Laurie, French and Saunders (who I cant stand) and Ben Elton etc...Lenny Henry, Ruby Wax, you name it they pop up in it. The best episode is the one in "France" where Rik Mayall turns up as a pervy priest and Nigel Planner is the bar man etc...Rik just takes over the whole show and makes the episode fly with his comic energy...the worst one is the one where he is trying to get his sister the Nun on board, its the worst example of Saunders and her annoying characters and mannerisms...All the sisters in it are so different and some work better as characters than others. Saunders is puts more effort in with her French sister and the American one than the Nun. And the less said about the old lady version the better...

Filthy Rich and Catflap is OK, quite funny, but of the three sitcoms that star Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall (this, The Young Ones, and Bottom), I would say that FR & C is the least funny, and Bottom is by far the most hilarious. To me, Bottom is utterly timeless, utter genius. I also believe that Edmondson and Mayall ate British greatest ever double act, and neither one was the 'straight' man, they are both absolute masters of comedy.
