Forgotten Player Profiles

Күн бұрын

Shawn Marion took the JuCo route before having a stellar year at UNLV where he prove to be a top prospect and one of the most versatile players in the 1999 NBA Draft. He would join a veteran suns team led by the backcourt 2000 duo of Jason Kidd and Penny Hardaway. Injuries to alot of the key suns of that era, lead to them being one of the biggest what ifs, but also gave Shawn Marion a chance to shine and we do exactly that as over the next 7 and a half seasons in Phoenix, he would establish himself as arguably the best two way player in the league and consistently place in the top 25 in the league for most statistical categories. He was at his best in Mike D'Antoni's 7 seconds or less offense with two time MVP Steve Nash and Perennial all star Amare Stoudemire. Marion would be the overlooked member of this trio, even by the Phoenix Suns organization as after not receiving a max contract extension, he would request a trade and bounce around to the Miami Heat then the Toronto Raptors for the next couple of seasons. Until he found a place in Dallas on a Mavericks team led by Dirk Nowitzki and Marion would be a key piece in the Mavs 2011 NBA Championship. He would spend another few years in Dallas before calling it a career after one year in Cleveland. He would retire in rare company due to his versatility as he would find himself high on some exclusive statistical lists with legends like Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone and Kevin Garnett. But nowadays, Marion doesn't get the love he deserves for how great he was, especially at just 6'7". So that's why today's episode is going to take a look at the Matrix, Shawn Marion.

*That 2007 season for the Suns was the most deflating for Phoenix fans, not only were the Suns robbed in the Spurs series but Phoenix also lost out in the 2007 Draft Lottery which was held a few weeks later when the Hawks pick they got from the Joe Johnson trade and was top 3 protected ended up being retained by Atlanta when the Hawks finished 3rd in the Lottery, Atlanta later selected Al Horford 3rd overall. Double whammy for the SUNS.*

The history of Kidd, Nash, Marion, and the Suns and Mavs is cool... The Mavs trade Kidd to Suns for Finley. Then the Suns traded Kidd's backup PG Steve Nash to Dallas for a 1st Round draft pick, and the Suns would use that pick to select Shawn Marion. Then the Suns would trade Kidd, and eventually lure Nash back to Phoenix to team him up with Marion. Then Dallas makes a big trade to get Kidd back in Dallas. Then Marion goes to Dallas to team back up with Kidd and win a ring with him and Dirk. It's really neat how it's all intertwined and came full circle. Kidd > Nash btw 😊

I agreed with everything you said until you said Kidd was greater than Nash. As a Suns fan, obviously you know we had them both. No disrespect to Kidd. Loved having him in PHX, and I hated to see him go, but being able to bring Steve back to where he started in PHX was amazing. We're gonna have to agree to disagree.

I got Kidd over nash as well. To get the nets to Back to Back final appearances was impressive. That team was gritty. Kidd was a very smart on D as well, not a lockdown defender but very good ...he would do the Dirty work... His stabilizing presence was what gave the Mavs the confidence to beat the Heat.

Cuban really messed up not keeping that chip team together, and giving them a chance to run it back. They really played well together after the trade deadline, as their record showed. He kept that money for nothing, when he could have given Dirk a chance at a repeat

I agree. It often irritates me when people talk about that 2011 Mavs team... A lot of people act like Dirk carried a bunch of washed up players to a championship. Part of the reason nobody picked the Mavs against Miami is because they didn't really respect how good players like Shawn Marion and Jason Kidd still were at the time, nor how unique their skill sets were... And even after they proved it by winning the chip, people still act like they were just average role players or something.

I wouldn't say that Marburry is no Jason Kid. He didn't know how to run a team or offense as well, but he was a better scorer, and although he was not the passer Kid was, he still had high assists numbers. Starburry was a hell of a player in his own right, he just didn't have it together upstairs like Kid did
@imdbtruth
@imdbtruth Жыл бұрын
Kidd did take the same Nets team that Marbury only won 26 games with and he won 52 games with them the next season on his way to back to back Finals appearances. So I think it's safe to say that Marbury was no Jason Kidd.
