Forgotten Player Profiles

Күн бұрын

Xavier McDaniel was an unexpected NCAA legend with the Wichita State Shockers in the 1980s. At 6’7” he had three seasons with over 13 rebounds per game, twice led the nation in rebounding and became the first Division 1 player in history to lead the nation in scoring and rebounding during his 1985 senior season. He would be a top 5 pick in the 1985 NBA draft and would go on to finish second in rookie of the year voting to Patrick Ewing. Then, teaming with Tom Chambers and Dale Ellis, he would be part of a short lived trio who took the Seattle Supersonics to the 1987 Western Conference Finals. He would continue with elite production for the next few years in Seattle, until tensions got him traded to Phoenix. His time in Phoenix would be short lived, and he would sign with the Pat Riley led New York Knicks for the 1992 season, where he would be a perfect fit as an intimidator on a team featuring Anthony Mason, Charles Oakley and John Starks. McDaniel would have a great year in New York and an even better postseason, taking Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the Chicago Bulls to 7 games. But contract disagreements would see McDaniel join the Celtics after Larry Bird’s retirement and the final year of Reggie Lewis’ career. But the rest of McDaniel’s career would be underwhelming as his decline was swift after going to Boston. He would play a few years with the Celtics, then a year in Europe and two more years with New Jersey before retiring at the age of 34. But such a promising start to a career has now seen Xavier McDaniel as one of the most forgotten players of all time. But if you weren’t going to remember him for talent and production, his toughness and intimidation factor was one of the most legendary of all time.

I think people also don’t really know that despite his aggressive style of play and intimidation tactics… X-Man in his prime was a LEGIT All-Star level player. Could play defense and rebound ofc, but also give you like 20 points per game!

Indeed Xavier McDaniel should've remained with the Knicks as they possessed a legitimate chance to win a the title back in that era however reality is Xavier McDaniel will always be remembered as a Seattle Supersonic as most of his damage was done in Seattle.

Heavy Ps I didn't know he lead the NCAA in scoring and rebounds . I recall hearing that he used to shave his eyebrows to psyche out his opponents. Those late 1980s Sonics Teams were stellar. Those early 1990s Knicks Team were tough. Pps Peace to Reggie Lewis and Anthony Mason.

As a Knicks fan, Xavier McDaniel was one of my favorite NBA players while he was playing for the Seattle Supersonics. When he arrived on the NY Knicks via a trade from Phoenix, many Knicks fans were happy, especially me. My jaw virtually hit the floor when the Knicks wouldn't resign him to long term deal. In fact, I was pissed at Knicks management. Too many X-Man stories to share. One of my favorite X-Man fight stories was when he played for the NJ Nets late in his career and got involved in a brutal fight with PJ Brown of the Miami Heat in which the X-Man was mostly on the receiving end of that fight. I laughed when his words were somewhat like: PJ body slammed me onto the ground. Something wasn't right because I'm the one who does the body slamming. I laughed at his comments on Sports-Center at that time because even when he was getting old, it was fun to listening to how he would explain his dust-up stories.

If McDaniel didn't get any knee injuries, he would've been a perennial All Star. He's FG% is really good too and he would always improve his numbers in the playoffs which are signs of a great player.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male, too. The second half of tenth grade, to the first half of twelfth grade were some of the BEST times of my life! 1993-94 was Top 3, and 1996 was special! Well, in 1990-91, I was a senior in high school. I was having Dick's Hamburgers on Queen Anne, near the Sonics training facilities. All of a sudden, an elevator door opened, and TWO 6'7" men were fist-fighting! I went to a PAYPHONE and called 911. I told them two men were fighting. The dispatcher asked me if I knew the names of the people involved. I said, "Dale.......Ellis." And "Javier McDaniel."

Outside of his final season in 2001, gained 1000+ scrimmage yards every year from 1992-2000, 1500+ scrimmage yards 7 years in a row from 1994-2000, rushed for 1000+ 7 times, gained 500+ receiving yards twice. Unfortunately, people will never let him live down the "For who, for what?" quote.
