Actually looks like it might be wrought iron, you can see some striations in the surface when its angled to the light a certain way. That and the fact that its two halves forge welded together means it could be old enough to be wrought. A quick dip in acid will tell for sure!

@ Ferric chloride is what most people use. Wrought iron has pattern to it like damascus, etching it will bring out that pattern.

I wouldn’t use this thing to cut wood but it’s nice to look at and it made a video

A fireman wouldn’t use it to cut wood, either. It’s used to bash and break dried lumber, not fell trees. It’s absolutely possible for a fire axe to be too sharp, especially on the adz or mattock edge, which is a digging tool. Dat polish, though. *chef’s kiss*. We usually stop at 180 grit and a coarse rouge for a tool in service.
