I like the 30" short scale 6-string basses because you can match the tuning of your guitar one octave down...which makes composing bass lines so easy for songs created on your guitar... 💥

What do I think about your Form Factor Wombat 6er? I like it so much that I'm willing spend the $3799 Form Factor's distributor Amp Shop Bass Exchange is asking for the 5 string version with Bartolini pups and pre that I'm buying. I currently have 8 short scale 4 string basses, and have been on the lookout for a short scale 5er for a long time. Your review gave me the extra bit of confidence I needed to buy one without be able to play it first. We'll see how long it takes to ship from ASBE in L.A. to my home in France. Can't wait!

There used to be one I lusted after by Brice, "HXB-406 3/4" , available on Rondomusic for $550. Some in Transparent Flame Maple Purple and Blue. I have an Ibanez 34" 6-string, and yeah. It's just a bit too much neck to take advantage of the chording possibilities. I have it strung with E-E custom D'Addario nickels and plain steel. Post-pandemic, the Rondo stock has never been the same.

Loved the sound when you had it going with the backing drums Lobster 🦞. The neck pick up sounds very much like an authentic “P” even though it’s not a “P” style pick up. With a touch of the bridge p/up you could get that great “PJ” sound. Like a SB-2.

Hey Lobster. Cool little bass. 6 strings sure opens up your possibilities. The flats make the tones smoothe. The neck pickup almost has a P tone to it. Your pick playing has much improved. Have great day😊. Until we groove again. 🥕🦀🎸🦞

It messes with my brain. 30 inch scale and the B string sounds like that? Defies logic...testament to good construction. And I REALLY dig those pickups.
@Vykk_Draygo Жыл бұрын
More likely the pickups, preamp, and string choice. Afterall, the primary factor that construction affects is the scale length which dictates tension on the strings. I've played a 35" scale 5-string that sounded flabby and flaccid, but that was a $400-$500 instrument with cheap electronics.
@jdmarino Жыл бұрын
I have been wondering if stiff flats like the LaBellas would make for a tight B on a short scale. Now I know. (I recently replaced the DT flats on the Mold Smoothie with LaBella's Low Tension flats. My fretting finger joints thanked me.)

Interesting/Awesome bass! Sounds good. the sound reminds me a bit of a Mensinger Cazpar short scale 5 I had a few years back. I'd like to hear how it sounds with either rounds or livelier not-so-dark-and-more-sustain flatwounds (like EB Cobalt flats or DA Chromes--but I assume you can't get all those gauges in those sets). That little puppy is a beauty though! As is, it would sound great on all those killer Motown and soul songs of the late 60s and early 70s--Al Green, Marvin Gaye. Gotta admit I'm lusting after this bass... not healthy. At least not healthy for my wallet!

Three grand is not crazy expensive for a specialized bass like this made by a small builder, especially if you examine the built in costs of the hardware, the electronics and the level of woodcraft needed to get the whole package into playable form. Although it's really not designed with me in mind, this seems like the entire instrument was pretty well thought out and executed.

I think it's a very nice bass, but single coil noise on a boutique bass is kind of disappointing. With that fixed (split coils or humbuckers) and a couple more frets it would be a perfect little bass, with the name of one of the cutest animals ever.

I don’t think Dingwall has anything to worry about. Nice sounding bass and would make a great 4 or 5 with a high C but that low B is awful, which given the scale length isn’t a big surprise. Visually the bass looks rather like a Wal. I guess with a custom maker you can specify what you want - I know that many love the sound of a pure single coil but the 60-cycle hum would drive me nuts. Still, great to see something different!

@@LowEndLobster Super high quality at the price points. Valiant punches at least $1500 above their weight in craftsmanship and not many machine thier own hardware down to knobs with multi wood inlays for instance compared to others in the market.
