I'm requesting social for my child do I send original birth certificate as proof or a copy? And also if I can't remember his social but I have the birth certificate do I need to put the social security number in the box if I don't remember it?
@teachmepersonalfinance7 ай бұрын
@@zackhoward7432 Generally, the SSA instructions state that you must send original identity documents or certified copies (not notarized, but certified by the original authority) of identity documents. You may be able to get a replacement Social Security card without knowing your child's SSN, but you would have to check with the SSA to see if they can process your application with the information that you can give them.

Applying for my daughter to get an SSN as she was born abroad. WHat should I enter in box 2 because she does not have a previously assigned.
@teachmepersonalfinanceАй бұрын
@@AustinSchweyen Nothing. But if your daughter is at least 12, you’ll have to apply with her in person.

Is it possible to get a paper copy inside of the office if you do not have a way to print the form? Also, what if you do not know your previous SSN?
@teachmepersonalfinance7 ай бұрын
I believe that you would be able to complete the form at a local SSA office, if that's your only option. However, I do not know what the SSA would recommend if you do not remember your prior SSN...I imagine that there is a recovery process with sufficient identity verification procedures, but I do not know exactly what those procedures look like.

I live abroad and I submitted SS-5 to receive a SS# for my daughter, but a year and a half has passed and have yet to receive a card. Ive been notified by the local consulate that my daughter has been issued a number, but to receive a new card I need to submit a replacement request to the US. Do I need to actually send the original, physical passports (My wife and I) and my daughters CBRA or can I just send a certified copy by myself? if so how do I certify in practice? what do I need to write and where?
@teachmepersonalfinance Жыл бұрын
When I tried to dig into this further, I uncovered a lot of variables that probably could not be addressed in your specific situation, without a understanding of your circumstances. For example, there are different procedures based on whether your daughter was born out of the U.S. vs. within the U.S., whether you submitted everything the SSA needs with your original application, etc. Instead of trying to guess at all of these, I followed the prompts for replacing a Social Security card on the SSA website (www.ssa.gov/number-card/replace-card). It eventually led me to a page that directed me to a list of Federal Benefits Units, co-located with embassies and consulates. I recognize that you've probably already been through this, so I would try to call the 800 number listed (800-772-1213). Instead of trying to mail your passports back to the United States, here is what I would specifically ask for: -Status on your existing request (the outstanding SS-5) -Step by step instructions on how to re-apply (if there is no status on the SS-5 you submitted, or if that's been closed out for some reason), specifically on how to handle your identity verification. I've also attached the list of Federal Benefits Units, just in case you wanted to double-check the offices. Some countries have multiple offices, and you might have better success if you reach out to a different person. www.ssa.gov/foreign/foreign.htm

In box 9 and 10 is this birth parents info or adoptive?
@teachmepersonalfinanceАй бұрын
You probably could use your adoptive parent info, but I would verify with the SSA before submitting the form. Generally, a best practice would be to set up an appointment at the local office, then go over the form and supporting documentation in person to make sure everything's in order.
@carr22046 ай бұрын
after completing the form, why is my signature missing? or do I even need to fill it since it is not a prefilled cell? also, are the parents information comsulsory? I did not fill them too
@teachmepersonalfinance5 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean when you refer to your missing signature field. From my understanding, the SSA form instructions state that you should complete and sign the form in legible blue or black ink. So if you complete the form online, I believe that's acceptable. However, you would then have to print the form to sign it and turn it in to the SSA office. Regarding your parent's information, you may be able to verify your identity without it. However, the onus would be on you to find a way to provide the necessary documents and provide the required information that the SSA needs to verify your identity. For most people, this would be difficult without the information for at least one parent. It might be possible for you to do this, but to figure out how to do it, you should contact the SSA office to see what requirements would apply in your particular situation.

Hi. I just became a US citizen by naturalization and my current name is different now with my name at birth and I'm about to update my SSN tomorrow. My question is should i also put my full name at birth if other than above? Or i will leave it blank?
@teachmepersonalfinance Жыл бұрын
You should provide your birth name, since you'll probably be sending your birth certificate as documentation. You should also provide your current name, if you are able to also provide a copy of a name change document supporting this.

The last name is 22 characters but the limit is 21 characters. Are there any solutions to this?
@teachmepersonalfinance9 ай бұрын
From the SSA website: Neither the first or last names shown on the SSN card should be reduced in length unless it exceeds the 26-character limit (to include middle initials and suffices). Therefore, omit middle names, middle initials, and suffixes if they prevent you from showing as many characters as possible for the first and last names.

@The.sunset.then.the.sunrose4 ай бұрын
Yes, it’s possible to get the copy inside the ss office. You should ask the security guard where the copy is at. But if you do not remember your previous ssn then mailing would not be the option. You will need to speak to an employee and let them know that information. So you would need a ticket. It takes a long time to get seen. Expect 3hrs waiting. Go on a day where you have the time and earlyyy, bring your ID (that shows a pic of you. As in drivers license/ state ID/passport/ work permit/ green card bring 2 just in case and unexpired) and the ss card if you have it. If you don’t have the card don’t worry about it. Go on maps and search ‘social security office near me’ to find the closes to you. Also read the reviews, it lets you know at lot about a place. I went to a 2.0 star office and the reviews were accurate but I had to get it done. Public libraries allow you to get free daily copies at a limit tho just apply for a library card and ask the librarian for help when it comes to printing it out. Just to make sure you don’t pay for ur copies. Hope this helps!
