Well, I'm very glad it helped you, but I don't think my video can claim credit for you acing your exam - seems like YOU had a lot to do with that! :) I'm glad it was helpful, though!

Hi. Thanks for posting. Did I miss the part of the video where you mention what information goes in the footnote?
@MelissaSEder2 жыл бұрын
Larrissa, that probably wasn't even in that video. I created these just to help students navigate in Google (and the video is even outdated, as it is). A great source for you that spells out everything that's required in this style is through the Purdue OWL: owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/chicago_manual_17th_edition/cmos_formatting_and_style_guide/chicago_manual_of_style_17th_edition.html Basically, though, the endnotes (in the footer of each page) are the sources you referenced on that particular page. The first time you list a source, you essentially give a full citation, just following a different format than on your bibliography. But you only do that the first time. From then on, you just use an abbreviated style, with only the author's last name and the page number. You can also use the notation ibid, which sort of means "ditto" or "see just above" - this is if you're referring to the exact same article as the last citation. Sometimes, you'll need to just add a different page number after the Ibid. I hope you find what you need!

what if you are citing the same source more than once on page?
@MelissaSEder5 жыл бұрын
Kyle, these videos are just for formatting your paper, not really about the style specifically. For information about that, visit the Purdue Owl (owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/chicago_manual_17th_edition/cmos_formatting_and_style_guide/chicago_manual_of_style_17th_edition.html), or my library put together a guide at actx.libguides.com/chicago. The first time you cite a source (for your whole paper), you put a full footnote. Every subsequent time, it can be a shortened footnote. And if you're citing the same source consecutively (in one paragraph and then immediately again in the next portion of the page), you can use Ibid, which basically means "ditto" or "same as above." Again, please check those guides for more information about using Chicago style! Good luck!

I'm still lost. Where in any part of the text do you need to a footnote?
@MelissaSEder4 жыл бұрын
Chris, I made these tutorials just to help students get their papers to look right - the spacing, etc., so it doesn't go into much detail about how to actually follow the Chicago/Turabian style. I'd also created an online guide (a LibGuide) for it, which is where you'll find more information about this style. Unfortunately, we no longer support Chicago style at my College, so this is slightly outdated now (based on the previous edition of the style manual). But it might help you more: actx.libguides.com/chicago . The Purdue Owl Writing Lab also does a great job, and they WILL be current: owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/chicago_manual_17th_edition/cmos_formatting_and_style_guide/chicago_manual_of_style_17th_edition.html . I think the general rule of thumb is that you put a superscripted number at the end of any sentence you need to provide a reference for - if you provide very specific information, give a direct quote from the source, or just need to remind readers of where you got this information, you'll need a superscripted number. When you're paraphrasing the source into your own words, scatter these citation reminders every 3 or 4 sentences or so. The first time you need to do that (reference one of your sources), you'll put a 1. Then, the next time you need to reference a source (even if it's the same source), you'll put a 2. You just go in consecutive order throughout your full paper. At the bottom of each of your pages, you'll then include the footer section, where you explain what each footnote on that page referred to. The first time you mention a source, you provide a full footnote citation. Every time after that, you can just provide the short citation, OR if you're referring to the same source as the footnote immediately before this one, you can write Ibid. Finally, even though you have that footer section at the bottom of each of your pages, you still have to provide full citations in the Bibliography. The style for how you write out the footnotes at the bottom of your pages is a bit different from the style of the full citations on the Bibliography as well - you use more commas for the footer footnotes and more periods in the full citation. I hope this didn't confuse you further! Good luck with your paper!
