This is a review of the G.I. Joe Strategic Long-range Artillery Machine or SLAM. Like a little mobile turret it featured quad cannons and ten micro-missiles. First issued in 1987 and re-issued in 1988, it is a common accessory on the aftermarket. But the question many collectors want answered is: what vehicle type is it?! It looks like a towed piece (but isn't) and looks like a rail car (but isn't).

Form, you are simply the best. Whenever I hear your voice and see one of your reviews it always puts a smile on my face. You are one of those few channels where I typically let the ads play out because I know that will net you that tiny bit of extra money. A small theory I have on the front/back seating. I believe that the soldier facing the canons is actually the driver, as it appeared that the soldier facing away from the canons seemed to have a radar/targeting screen, making him the gunner. Note how in a fighter jet, the gunner actually sits in back while the pilot sits in front, typically using visuals as a guide for where he is going, while the gunner in back watches a targeting screen to see where to fire. Thank you for your many glorious G.I. Joe reviews. To me G.I. joe is the best toy ever, few others are necessary.

I would guess the seat facing away from the canon would be the driver when the turret is spun around. And then the other seat fires the cannon with the recoil arms down.

Just got one of these the other day never really cared for the '87 vehicles till I started expanding my collection and getting them. Have to say nothing has really let me down.

Looks like it should be compatible with the 1986 Havoc.

I've always been interested in the S.L.A.M., but never owned one. Given its size, I always assumed it was a *towed* vehicle, like the M.M.S., Mountain Howitzer, or A.S.P.

Nice review. Had the S.L.A.M. as a kid and recently bought back lots of my gi joe stuff from the 80's, so it's al great for me. Wondering if you ever going to review the 88' Rolling Thunder and DEMON or the 89' Raider?

Lucyan71 Yes, I will be reviewing the Rolling Thunder (in the future) and the DEMON (in my upcoming Iron Grenadiers theme month). I don't have the Raider, yet.

I actually superglued the missiles on mine because I hardly ever played with it and didn't want to lose the missiles.

Wasn´t the S.L.A.M shown as a towed vehicle in G.I. Joe #59? The one with the first appearance of the Pogo and Raptor.

Anthraxegott Yes, the SLAM was towed by the '83 APC in #59. Funny thing though: the APC toy doesn't have a tow hook!

That's funny. Actually, the other guy might be there to look for threats behind the gunner. One passing thought. To save effort on molding, I have wondered why Hasbro didn't limit the variety of missiles and guns, if G.I. Joe indeed began as something resembling a real military. In a real military, you'd have common rifles and weaponry being shared across the board. It would have been useful for these tiny things which would get lost.

Geoffrey Linehan You make an interesting point about re-use of molds to show a cohesive military. The line did that in 1993 (Battle Corps) with the weapon trees and spring-loaded missiles that came with the figures. There was a narrow variation of weapons just for Joes and just for Cobras.
