Check out the Sewol Ferry tragedy and the Italian A.R,M.Y. explanation of all the symbolism that was used in this mv. The song was written about grief, loss and survivor's guilt earlier but the mv seems to deal with the Ferry tragedy and has remained on the Korean music charts since it's release. Spring Day is the Queen Mother of BTS songs.
Not only did it never leave the charts since its release when they went into the military it went back up to #1 in Korea again for a bit.

This song/mv gets me in my feels. The song is about loss. The mv pays tribute to the Sewol Ferry tragedy where about 300 people drowned most of whom were students on a field trip (as a mum, I can't even imagine that pain) and it addresses those who will never grow up, and those who have survived and feel guilty (survivor's guilt).The song almost goes through the grief where you miss the person, you hate them, and I just lose it when it slows down and V says "you know it all, you're my best friend" and it seems like his voice breaks a bit. It's almost like acceptance and then in the end, the "whoaoaoa" is like hope that you will feel better someday and your spring day will come again. It has stood the test of time, as people go through this all the time and they sang it at tiny desk as that was during covid where many people were experiencing loss and hardships. Thanks for your reaction. If you want, watch the explanation vid but bring tissues.
@evantesseract73710 күн бұрын
It's honestly the best artistic portrayal of grief I've ever experienced. They really captured so much of what it is to lose someone. The first time I heard it I barely knew them and I cried. That was the tiny desk, and I knew by the end of Spring Day that I was going to love them. That if this was what they thought was worth singing about, that I'd find so much more. And I have. 💜

"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula K Le Guin. A short story you'll never forget. I did a reading from it in college, maybe 78 or 79. The tragedy of Omelas is that walking away from it does not change it. I watched the explanation video for Spring Day late in covid, after I lost a brother and two cousins. Timing. Wasn't the same for days, maybe weeks...
@evantesseract73710 күн бұрын
Have you read LeGuin's later writing about Omelas? Because she wrote more, later, about how it's not just the ones who walk away. Sometimes, they find each other, and join forces, and go back to change things. I think that was it... I can't remember where I read that, but it was a powerful thing, a reflection on her own work and how she saw it differently as she grew older. And it meant the world to me, because it offered hope, not just that some people would reject the price of utopia, but that we could change it, maybe, someday. That we could at least hope to change it. I'm sorry for your loss, and I know what you mean. Spring Day, even without the video explanation, is the purest expression of grief. It must have been intense in that moment.
@bordeauxroze737510 күн бұрын

I’m pretty sure it was Jin singing during the part that you couldn’t figure out who was the lead vocal. Also, the meaning behind this song, that of feeling loss and missing and never forgetting, I recently learned that the song Spring Day was written to lend compassionate significance to the devastating ferry sinking that happened in South Korea in 2014. BTS isn’t just a vocal group, they sing for anyone and everyone that needs them and needs their uplifting. They are a choir of the people and for any person who wants to feel their message. BTS uplifts and impacts more than they’ll ever be given credit for.

The song of course is about grief and loss. The MV is about a specific loss. As others have said it is related to the Sewol Ferry Tragedy that happened in 2014. The MV came out in February 2017 in the middle of large protests, blacklisting, and an impeachment of South Korea's president--all directly related to the tragedy. The song references *Snowpiercer* and the MV references Omelas (short story by Ursela LeGuin). Both are statements about society and children pay the ultimate price to maintain that society.
@miukiai15 күн бұрын
this song is well beloved by the korean people, often associated with the sewol ferry tragedy (although not confirmed). the mv is poignant with references to suicide (the shoes/barefeet represent this in a lot of asian cultures) as well as the links to Omelas and the BU storyline. the song also holds a lot of personal meaning the bts members and army too so makes sense why the song never leaves the charts

About Sewol Ferry Tragedy, Out of 476 passengers and crew, 304 died in the disaster, including around 250 students from Danwon High School in Ansan. Out of 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes before the Korea Coast Guard 🥲

As you see in the comments below there is so much to unpack in this song both in the lyrics and the metaphors. You REALLY need to watch one or more of the explanation videos. Also the train symbolizes a lot of the story of Snowpiercer (about classes) and The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. There are differing ideas regarding inclusion of the Sewol Ferry Disaster. I tend to believe strongly that it is represented here in the tall stack of clothes: based on a famous art piece but here it is intended to represent all the clothes of the children that washed up on the beach. Also, the notes on the dryers in the laundromat are some of the notes left for the Sewol Ferry kids. The government (and powerful company who owned the ferry) tried to sweep this under the rug but BTS brought it into global attention, which pressured the company and the government to finally take some action. You have to understand how risky it was for them to do this at that time. They had only debuted a couple years before and were complete underdogs in the entertainment industry. They did this even knowing they could be black-listed and never perform publicly again. They chose to do the right thing. When the videos load note that under Big Hit it says music and artists for healing. They mean it.
