At the age of five, while celebrating a goal in an after-school game of soccer, Michel Chikwanine was kidnapped by rebel fighters in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He eventually managed to escape, but not before he was subjected to some truly horrific experiences. He recounts his story in a graphic-novel-style book called Child Soldier: When Boys and Girls are Used in War, which he co-wrote with Jessica Dee Humphreys. The book is illustrated by Claudia Davila, and it's aimed at 10 to 14-year-old readers. Chikwanine chats with q host Shadrach Kabango about why he's choosing to tell the harsh truths of his story to a young audience.

q is a magazine show that’s unpredictable in the best sense - proud to be “a wild mix of culture by way of Canada” as described by the New York Times. The Globe & Mail noted the show’s “raging popularity across a variety of platforms -- podcasts, television, websites, satellite radio, terrestrial radio, and occasional live remote broadcasts."

Although I think that healthcare and refugee support should privately managed and funded instead, I feel for that guy and I guess that politics could be a more prominent reason for so much violence in Africa than race and culture.

@@Plug_Art that'd be true, although I think that culture plays into it also.

@@Isaac-ho8gh Avenging your people is considered respectable in African as well as many other cultures, such as Japanese. This king of revenge mindset leads to a constant cycle of violence. I feel propaganda plays a large role in it as well.

I know, it seems fake. I don't know if it's real, but I guess that if he went through all this when he was 5, maybe the trauma wasn't as evident. He might have had some severe PTSD, and maybe he went past everything. I don't know, it's so surreal that maybe it strikes as fake...
