His the best/great players tend to get centuries at Lords comment knowing he never quite attained the feat embodies his unbelievable humility as a cricketer. Absolute love Athers thoughts & memories on the game

Top bloke, fantastic commentator and writer. There's that old saying that talent shouldnt be mistaken for character, but he has both in spades. Listening to Allan Donald talk about his respect for Atherton makes it clear how good he was, in the face of the golden age of bowling

I've met Michael at my local cricket club and he is a wonderful person to have a chat with about anything but mainly of cricket we spoke of the likes of Glenn McGrath giving him issues with his style of bowling and what he did to try and combat it a very humble man.

Wonderful, could listen to him talking cricket all day. Such a knowledgeable commentator & a damn fine player in an era when we frequently struggled. Excellent writer on the game too. Thanks Michael, you're a national treasure.

His knock of 185 not out to save the test in South Africa is for me one of the top 10 innings of ALL TIME. He was a rock, sure watching Lara's swashbuckling innings were wonderful, Don Bradman, Viv Richards and those will always be held in higher regard for entertainment, but you should not underestimate the grit of this man, in one of the worst era's of English cricket, under massive scruntiy all the time by a press and public who were having to get used to losing, one of the best mentality cricket players that's ever opened. He was one stubborn Englishman.

The dressing room looks more like the back-end of an ordinary department store ; but I suppose it's invested with the sweat and tears of more than a hundred years of joy and disappointment . The walls and furniture have been witness to all the greats of the game ; what dramas and passions might have been enacted in this haloed enclosure , if they could only talk . Atherton does a very dignified job of taking us behind the scenes ,no histrionics or personal glory reminiscing .Lords really carries the weight of it's history well . I haven't played in that league but what wouldn't I give to spend a few moments of contemplation there .
@lordihlendam36195 жыл бұрын
I've always enjoyed watching Athers bat -- and commentate after he retired. The stats simply don't do the man justice. For the time, given how fragile his side's batting order was in the 90's, he was a critically important player and one of the better batsmen that England's produced.
@mrfrisky29975 жыл бұрын
Atherton's stats arnt the best you will see but there was a period in the mid 90s when England was a very poor team and he more or less kept England going and competing by him self.

I remember Gooch's 333. What an innings that was. Botham was my childhood hero, but that innings from Gooch cemented my love for test cricket. I was in awe watching him, he just seemed to be unstoppable.

I was a member of Middlesex CCC for about 12 years, which meant I could access the pavilion on county championship match days. My wife & I have also attended a couple of dinners in the Long Room - it's an awesome venue ! 😎

I wish to see a documentary movie on this ground, which should include the evolution of cricket, old scoreboards, paperworks, cricket kits, and details on all the famous names here. I can too imagine of some of the greats in various fields in London during 19th century, say scientists, philosophers, writers, musicians...to be playing or been associated to this ground.

*Did I hear CRICKET? This anachronistic colonial, goofy game should be phased out! This is how it can be done: ADIDAS, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche will donate 999 million footballs to Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. In 5-10 years one of these countries will qualify for the FIFA World Cup. And that will be the end of Le Cricket. "Sticky wicket, The Ashes" who needs it? Think about your children and protect them from cricket. Johnnie de Bangkok. You can get rid of the FUCKING Pounds (LBS!) and Helmut von Fahrenheit, as well. GO METRIC Think about your children....*
