Spider Marks is wrong as to the placement of No. Korean artillary. The caves are on the SOUTH side of the mountains, facing South Korea. The caves have blast doors which are closed to protect artillery located inside, but can be opened to allow the artillery to fire from inside the caves, making the artillary very hard to destroy with weapons.

That general has a poor sense of direction when pointing out the mountains and saying " they go from NorthWEST to NORTHeast when it's actually Southwest to Northeast I hope he never has to "direct fire" towards the enemy. Most likely it would be going out into the ocean ( somewhere )

A rationalist viewpoint on this matter. I am a moderate 62-year-old independent voter and a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant (1972-1993) with a career tour at SHAPE HQ in Belgium, among others. The problem with diplomatic or military brinkmanship is that it is all too easy to go just that little bit too far resulting in an armed confrontation of some form that no one is really seeking. Both sides leaders are quickly painting themselves into a corner where ego and saving face, ie; not looking weak, become the primary goal, resulting in the end into becoming a full-fledged war. My military career was primarily during the cold war and the last time I saw things get this close to the brink was during the latter stages of the Yom Kippur war in 1973 - and at that time there was no rhetoric of this type to make things even worse, as Israel and the Arabs were the ones in armed conflict at the time, and not us and Russia. To make matters worse the leader of North Korea and his continual bombastic threats against us plays right into the hands of the hawks and military-industrial complex on our side - which shows how little he understands us and our true military capabilities, many of which even our own people are not aware of. I am concerned that the hawks are now feeling justified into leading the charge into conflict with a full-fledged military option and to hell with diplomacy. With yesterday’s direct threat against Guam by North Korea I would now estimate that the chances of military conflict have risen to at least 70%. At this point in time I must say that I am not very optimistic about the near future and probably would not bet money on peace being the end result. About the best we can hope for at this point is that China, not wanting to be dragged into an armed conflict by their irresponsible ally, will militarily intervene into North Korea and depose the current leader and disarm that country. I will admit that the chances of this happening are not great, but one can always hope before it’s too late.

Those artillery pieces in the mountains the general mentions have severe limitations. Mainly, only a relatively small number are actually capable of hitting Seoul from their present locations. According to Mizokami writing for Asian Security Watch: Despite the thousands of artillery pieces, only 700 heavier guns and rocket launchers, plus the newer 300-millimeter MRLs, have the range to strike Seoul. Only a third would normally be fired at once, and notional rates of fire would be slowed tremendously by the need to withdraw guns into their hardened artillery sites (HARTS) to shelter them from counter battery fire. Otherwise, he gives viewers some good info. He also does not mention Tomahawks firing from our ships in the Sea of Japan. Of course, all this is only relevant as long as conventional weapons are used. If nukes are used, all those artillery pieces in the mountains are scrap metal within seconds. edit: It should also be mentioned that most of the DPRK artillery has been set up in position to support a land invasion across the DMZ, not a bombardment of Seoul.

Did you know when they said' they would launch their planes after the NK invaded to strike the artillery? Well seeing from satellite imagery, I can see that NK has an Air field right where he said they would turn around and bomb NK artillery. Another thing is that if NK decided to launch multiple missiles at once they wouldn't be able to shoot them all down. JS
