Anything goes with James English Ep/97
the story of reformed criminal Stephen Gillen.
Stephen Gillen, a reformed high security category A prisoner
involved in organised crime that ended up costing him a 17 year prison sentence.
Stephen had a very troubled upbringing in Ireland before moving to London and that's when his life of crime began.
Stephen was in and out of prison all his whole life and battled with his own demons everyday that eventually led him to having addiction problems with Drugs.
After receiving 17 years in prison Stephen decided to use his time inside to turn his life around and has worked relentlessly to become a better person and it worked as Stephen is now a successful entrepreneur in the areas or business and life mastery and travels the world doing charity work.

What a complete waste of one and half hours. Loads of waffle and no substance. What crimes did he do to jump to cat a, can't be just having a gun. What did he do to rebel in prison? What did he do to go up and down the block? Having been released, did he have a load of money stashed away,? How did he get a job when he came out and what was it? How did he get on the board of companies ? The while interview tells you nothing, complete waste. What jobs has he done , companies started since prison. All we know he is going to have a film made, well I hope it is better than this interview?

People saying he doesnt answer the question...my take is that he, like everyone else has an agenda for doing these interviews. Some agendas are "I was crazy me, how about all this crazy stuff I did!" whereas Mr Gillen's agenda is "If I can change, so can you". He accepts the interview but it will be on his terms, no matter how many times the interviewer tries to make it salacious. Plus, I dont mean this nastily, but he is doing his best to articulate some deep thoughts after being institutionalised for the majority of his adult life. Theres enough people in these comments saying they did time with him in different years to show hes not a fake!

I think James sets up questions good, thrn answers come. He bears around bush and the answer is diverted which is either pretty smart or, the guy in the room just figured it out a different way but James sometimes knows the answers, but sets up question with a different idea, he listens well, good guest this guy. James is James, I think James could just talk a little slow and with space rather than. Boom boom boom boom but, it's who he is ...what am saying is, leave the scramble, look at the pace tempo between each guy here , the guest, slow. Spaces, James, tight and fast, I think surroundings has lot to do with it, James is basically sharp - but thts a gd way to address. It's force

I remember my brother got borstal, and it was converted to a young offenders sentence, and i got detention centre a few months to year later, because the judge couldnt hand me a borstal sentence. Detention training was a sentence of 5 months and under, by that time, as borstal training was no longer available to judges handing down for crime carrying a sentence over 5 months. Whereas, borstal was for crimes over 6 months, and all sentences over 6 months became young offenders. He has conused the time line... Detention centre trainee, replaced borstal trainee, and all borstal trainnes, converted to young offenders. He is the only man i heard of to serve as both borstal trainee and detention centre trainee, but, he says he done detention centre first? Utter tosh, it didnae happen.

@@lewryGrant Aye, he may well have done detention centre training for his first sentence, but he never got a borstal sentence afterwards... detention centre training usually was for first time offenders, and was brought in to phase out borstal training sentences? But, here, we all been through the system, those that watch these, and you say you know the guy, so... can you name me one other person to have served a detention centre training sentence and then a borstal training sentence. Never mind the order, name one other criminal that served both a borstal and detention centre training sentence? I can tell you right now, you are going to have a hard time finding that con. Big fan of Stephen and his work. I’ve watched a few podcasts and interviews of him now and he’s such a enigma, he could be interviewed for 8hrs and talk all the way through but you still wouldn’t know his full story, intelligent bloke.

Exactly he never actually said about what he did do to find himself in prison in the first place. A lot of waffle imo.

James pal your stuffs good, ex con myself which is maybe why your work interests me so much, but you need to let lads talk & stop interrupting them when there in their flow, not a dig chum but dont try answer for the guys when their trying to give you the answer, seriously iam great admirer of your work pal but you can see guys like stephen sighing as if to say let me fkn answer in my own words !! Mate if you ever get chance to interview Charlie Bronson youll need to get one of those plastic screens if you interupt him chum, good luck pal.

I agree totally with this comment. James' best interviews have been those where he allows the interviewee to develop his story in his own way and at his own pace. In this particular case we learnt nothing about how Stephen changed his life or what he is actually doing now, everything stopped when he went into rehab. After that point there was no development of what should have been the most interesting part of the interview.

Feel sorry for the viewers who had expectations of what this interview should have been and wrote it off. Some seriously inspirational stuff here for people in deep shit but trying to make a different life for themselves. Would love to have this guy as business coach and mentor.
