As a criminal defense lawyer for over 30 years I have listened to an unfortunate number of sentencing pronouncements. I have never heard one as thoughtful, as well-reasoned and as grounded in the American principles of criminal law as this. It has to be rough being an empathetic judge. You see a LOT of people that you sorta just want to shake and scream at "Why are you throwing your life away like this?!". It's obvious he understands that a LOT of criminals are also victims of circumstance in their own way, and while it doesn't absolve them of their crimes it's always worth considering when sentencing them.
