I feel the writer's pain here. While he was an OCPD in Malindi, there was a high rate of robbery with violence. While there was a high-tech one....he fronted innocent policemen to keep vigil the prospective area. My brother-in-law and two others were new in the field and not aware of the game, and tried to shoot at the 'robbers' during an armed robbery at a beach hotel. He was shot and badly wounded, losing his right hand permanently. The other two managed to arrest 2 gang members. To make the story short, the thugs terrorising Malindi were 'assigned policemen' on Mwangi's payroll and were carrying out orders from him. The arrested thugs-cum officers were released on bond the very night, and the badly wounded one was sent to Nairobi the same night as a victim of an attempted robbery attack in Kariobangi. My brother in law was admitted to Malindi Hospital, where we had to foot the bill ourselves even though he lost his hand in line of duty (the story changed that they were not on official duty by the time of the incident and yet they had signed for the guns out and also signed out). We had to transfer him to Coast General Hospital, but when the beach owner gott wind of it, he sponsored his treatment at Nairobi hospital, where my brother in law was also fixed an artificial arm. The other two victims of circumstances were transferred...one to Mandera and the other to Turkana soon after they were released from remand prison pending police investigation report on the matter. My brother in law was transferred while still in hospital, and we collected his household items for him in absentia but with authority from Mwangi that 'huyo mtu aende afanye kazi kwa records za police headquarters ya kwao'. My brother-in- law was never compensated but we are glad he is alive. That is Mwangi King'ori, I know him well......we forgave him😊
