Foreign assistance funding is less than 1% of the federal budget appropriate by Congress which consists of more than one party. That less than 1% of the budget HAS changed American lives. You just don't see it up close. It stopped a global epidemic of HIV that would have killed thousands of Americans. It has helped stabilize parts of the world, avoiding conflict that would have killed American troops. We don't live in isolation unfortunately. What happens in other places affects us. Congress knows that. And they have used that small part of the budget to make us safer for decades. We are less safe now.

USAID like all federal agencies reports to Congress annually what they do with every dollar they spend. Some of the programs they fund haven't been successful. Some have been wildly successful. Google PEPFAR. Google malaria PMI. Malaria is making a comeback in the US, but in Africa USAID has helped eliminate it in some countries. @wqv5423ln I work in a rural health center in Ethiopia in a project funded by USAID and Where we provide medical assistance and medication to people affected in conflict and all of a sudden we are told to stop work and shutdown our medical team overnight! There are thousands of people getting essential medications including psychiatric medications and I can't go to the clinic and offer my assistance to the people who need them. We are in a very hopeless situation and it's very sad! Please be a voice for the helpless! They say they prepared waviers we raised it but no one is seeing it b/c all of them are suspended to see their emails! Please be a voice!

My daughter-in-law works on health projects for USAID in Mozambique; she and my son, who works at the State Department there, are totally upended by this news; they have no idea what's next, except that she will be on paid leave for an undetermined period, starting Friday. They are not yet aware of any concrete plans to return them, with their daughter, pets, and household effects, to the USA within the next 30 days. Her contract was ending in June, with a new overseas posting later in the summer. Two highly-educated Americans will return to the USA unemployed and demoralized. Fortunately, we'll be able to help them as they try to re-organize their lives and careers. Multiply this by thousands of USAID people, and you can imagine the chaos this is causing. This is a cruel administration, tearing down an important agency of the U.S. Government on the whim of an unelected billionaire and his ilk; this is not really about cost-saving. This will diminish our standing in the world. Nothing that is going on in Washington at the moment will benefit most of those who voted Donald Trump.
