For people wondering why they don’t just drill a hole.. Turtle shells are alive, it’s actually their rib cage and BONE. It’s not like fingernail or claws or horns or something. Also, once you introduce an opening you have a massive risk of infection and disease getting in and the air will just continue to come back… you don’t want it full of sea water, so you can try to fill it with sterile saline but the air probably comes from dissolved gasses and will keep coming back. This is a much safer solution.

Mechanically, doesn't it work like a pneumothorax? Why couldn't the same sort of procedure be just as effective?
@bogdanrzheusski8115
@bogdanrzheusski8115 Ай бұрын
@@Faesharlyn in most cases pneumothorax doesn't come with mechanical alterations to the body so the treatment includes returning organs to their natural position. In this case, that's not possible.

@bogdanrzheusski8115 not possible because of the damage to the shell, I can't help but think of them as "dislocated" scutes.. But what's preventing them from filling that cavity with sterile saline?it's denser than air and would correct the float
@feuerling
@feuerling Ай бұрын
Paraphrased from a turtle rehab website: Air can be removed from turtle body cavities by inserting the needle through the soft spot by the hind flippers, but the turtles also have go be treated for whatever caused the air to build up in the first place, like an infection or lung injury, or it will just keep filling up. If they stay at the wrong angle for too long (more than 4 weeks) their lungs will begin to deform, so during longer treatments, weights are used to correct their positioning.

Yes, which means it's always changing - which is why none of the other solutions worked, and why this one could also potentially not work out in the end. Chronic irritation to the shell. They're not even out of the testing stage, but are claiming it's going to help all turtles with this (in captivity). We'll see.

Technology is awesome! 3D printing actually saved my grandmother from getting her right leg amputated! She is a longtime osteoporosis sufferer so she has needed prosthetics to keep her knee intact over the years. However due to the progression of osteoporosis, over time the prothesis no longer stayed in place so it needed replacement which she did get. One day though, she had an accident and broke her knee. She was told there was nothing more they could do and amputation was needed. She ended up getting a second opinion and a specialist was able to create and design a special more durable and flexible prothesis for her knee by using 3D printing! So they saved her leg! She's even able to walk with the assistance of her walker! But she's mostly wheelchair bound. Love seeing these types of stories!

Is there anyway to get these boating companies to maybe also create some method for preventing these turtles from getting hit so violently in the first place when moving through the water? The boats have to be moving realitivly fast to be denting their shells, so maybe a form of padding on the bottom end to cushion the impact? I'm not sure if this is even viable but It seems like it'd be also good to try tackling the reason of why they're getting hit aswell. just a thought.
@mlxrieisacatlover
@mlxrieisacatlover Ай бұрын
this seems like a wonderful idea!!
@idminister
@idminister Ай бұрын
the faster an object is when it interacts with water, the more like a solid the water behaves. cushioning would be a soft spot, a point of failure for water pressure to collect (build up) and breach the hull. and prior to deform if integrated into the hull or add extra profile to the hull if not; both of which will lower the hydrodynamics of the hull increasing fuel expenditure and requiring the emission of more spent/processed fuel into the environment for the same movement compared to without. with technology, and regardless of concern about turtles, nautical development has always aimed for being able to make vessels lighter; less mass means the same movement energy can either move the ship faster or more distance (efficiency) and is cost saving. Its why fiberglass and modern metal has replaced wood in ship construction for even non military vessels. additionally, even without any human or human made device involvement and going back in time to even before the age of sail, most sea turtles become food and die even before reaching adulthood, and those that make it to adulthood rarely live long; like 'housecats' a wild 'housecat' average life expectancy is under 5yrs
@StonedtotheBones13
@StonedtotheBones13 Ай бұрын
I agree that this is easier than getting shipping companies to care and there are boat logistics idk here, but saying "they would die anyway" is just not a good argument. We're talking about the human impact on them, humans should fix the human impact. @@idminister

Adding padding to a boat will madly decrease its fuel efficiency, which means more pollution pumping into the air to cause mass extinction of species. Not a worthy trade-off. Of course the main culprit of everything is capitalistic greed and consumerism, but you can't do anything about it.

It’s times like this that I want to know what the animal is thinking. I know how badly I feel when my back hurts, though my balance never was affected thankfully, I still can’t even imagine how badly it must be for these turtles. What must it have felt like for Charlotte to have such a condition that affected her badly be corrected? What did she think throughout the process? I can only imagine, and even then, I’m in disbelief that people actually did that, all for a turtle. I know how that’s worded sounds bad, but it’s the only way I can say it. I’m astounded in the best ways at how much thought and time went into their making something beneficial to help, when honestly I think a good deal of people would just throw in the towel and try to make the turtles’ days as comfortable as can be before their time is up. God bless all the people involved in finding solutions to help ease the pain of and give back to the turtles.

it requires a very different skillset and is probably riskier, but I reckon a better fix, and particularly one that could also be done on wild/to be released turtles, would be to replace the internal air bubble with a blob of permanent biologically inert filler, like human cosmetic silicone injections. silicone is a little denser than water, it might be dense enough to do the job. I would guess that the air bubble is likely to be safely, without hitting big blood vessels or organs, accessible with large needles alone with no cuts needed, either from underneath the rear edge of the shell, or through small holes drilled through the shell (yes I know that's a living bone structure). that could probably even be done on wild turtles with same day release directly on a boat, with some smart antiseptic/antibiotic and patch-up methods. if I recall correctly, reptiles are a bit iffy to sedate, but some sedative gas is applicable for surgeries, and would fit well with the fact that this would be a very fast operation - maybe 5 minutes if you inject silicone slowly in order to have it settle well in the cavity and push out as much air as possible before the silicone reaches the venting needle at the top. by common veterinary/biologist standards, it would even be acceptable to do it without sedation, if you don't drill through the shell. or maybe there are other substances that are safely broken down in the turtle and result in the turtle's flesh and organs slowly being pulled into the previous void, and the turtle regaining a more normal shape if it's still growing.

Keep in mind that air inside is going to reappear. It's not there because of some sort of hole, this part is basically intensities and it's not supposed to have atmosphere air inside. Most likely it's gases that collect as subproduct of biological activity.

It sounds like they were still getting him used to wearing the harness and need to give him time to start using his hind flippers again. It'll probably be some time before they're able to add all the weights on since he'll need to have time to adjust each time they add one on :33

@@erinbsullivan444 I think they only just started him on the harness somewhat recently, they can't show us the final outcome because it hasn't happened yet c: Hopefully we'll get an update in the future though!

I don't understand why strapping weights on the turtle is very different from just gluing them. Also does this harness stretch over time as the turtle grows?
@mylifewithmarmalade4624
@mylifewithmarmalade4624 Ай бұрын
Turtle shells are living tissue, adhesives like epoxy that will hold the weight required and also not degrade in salt water can irritate the tissue of the shell itself. Which in a situation like this where the turtle needs those weights for decades, it’s just not an acceptable solution.
@TwitchyMofo
@TwitchyMofo Ай бұрын
@@mylifewithmarmalade4624 yeah I'm not convinced. Source? And how will this harness adjust to a growing turtle? It'll restrict the shell and cause deformation. I've seen it with turtles getting caught in plastic. Surgery is the only long term solution. If they want something temporary adhesive is far easier to implement on a large scale.
@mylifewithmarmalade4624

@ well the video itself mentioned irritation from adhesive had been an issue for that particular turtle, I have a friend who breeds red eared sliders that I care for when he’s out of town, I’ve spent years caring for live reef aquariums (not with sea turtles) and I spent about 4 years working as a vet tech. You’re right, I’m not an expert. But I know enough about basic turtle anatomy, veterinary medicine/surgery, and marine eco systems to make some educated assumptions about why surgery would not be a good solution. The harness could be remade in a larger size or different shape as the turtle grows, just like we get new shoes regularly, an amputee must regularly get their prosthetics refitted or replaced, or a denture wearer gets dentures refitted or replaced. This is a turtle who will not be releasable. It will remain under human care so the harness can be monitored and refitted regularly. The concern is to allow the animal to live as comfortably as possible given its permanent disability.

@mylifewithmarmalade4624 all I'm getting from this is the harness is a solution only for turtles in captivity which are not in any danger anyways. What good is this if you are just going to keep them in captivity after you fit them. They need a long term solution to allow them to be released back in the wild. Surgery seems like the only way. Or adhesive even if it's temporary they can at least breed for many years in the wild.

@@TwitchyMofoUntil technology advance where they can find a surgical procedure to fix it in one go, I think the 3D printing gear will have to do for now. Plus it is cost efficient and requires less intrusive health maintenance afterwards that can be detrimental to the turtles mental well-being. Creatures kept in captivity are used for research and educational resources. It is sad, but thanks to those unable to return to wild, we learned how to help the wild life better. That's why most good aquarium/zoo focuses on improving the quality of life for their permanent residence. Like this tech.

This should be done with nylon webbing and stainless hardware just like scuba weight belts. The use of 3d printers needlessly over complicates the process. A one size fits most adjustable harness would be far easier to deploy.

The weights shift around too much. Webbing slowly stretches over time under tension, and the belt will abrade the skin off if it loosens at all because the way they are shaped, the only place you can get something around them is the widest section of the body. So any belts immediately want to slide to the legs and spin to the underside of the turtle. With small rehab turtles, we could sometimes use huge ace bandages and because they were in a very shallow wading pool they couldn't get it off much of the time. In concrete or with rockwork they would have it off immediately.

Great concept, but sounds like they want to keep the design files proprietary if they're requiring the scans to be to be uploaded directly. Locking animal welfare behind a paywall is deplorable.

If there is air trapped under his shell, why can't they drill tiny holes to let it out? With today's technology, you would think they could be precise enough to not hurt the turtle
