i dont see any other comments pointing this out, so how tom hanks came up with the unique voice. the young actor who played childhood forrest just had an unusual accent, and couldnt speak any other way. the director was considering a recast, telling hanks "i dont know what we're going to do". hanks took him to mcdonalds and spent a little time learning the kids voice so he could do an impression of him as an adult. hanks asked "what does your father do?" and got the priceless response"my daddy makes grease". you can find clips of hanks telling the story if youre interested.

Searching for something or someone required hours of pouring over hundreds of microfilm cards at a library. Most guests on The Tonight Show have publicists who are more than happy to brag about their clients or else the guests freely do it themselves, but not Forrest Gump.

The most obvious metaphor in the movie is running: Forrest and Jenny spend the movie running away from their pain or toward what they hope is destiny. Lt Dan thought he had a destiny too, but loses his legs and can't run, and becomes the first character to "make his peace with God," when he thanks Forrest for saving his life.

The saddest part of the movie is when you realize why Forrest ran for 3 years. He was mentally suffering. Losing bubba, his mom, not having Dan around all the time anymore, Jenny leaving again. He was always to to run when he faces trouble or problems. This time, his troubles were in his heart, and he couldn't run from it, no matter how far or how long he ran 😢

When I saw that in a newspaper ad (San Jose Mercury News) for the movie, I knew I had to watch it in the theater. The special effects for the movie were done by Industrial Light & Magic, motion picture visual effects company. It was ground-breaking technology for that time.

You were right in Jenny's case. And why she never let Forest get too close to her, or ran off each time: She was protecting Forest from herself. She feels, like she is the cause for all the bad things that keep happenening to her. So people, who are around her, will get hurt, too. So she keeps her distance to those she likes/loves. 1994 seems really a long time ago by now, but I have to say, that in the last 20-25 years not too many things changed in the tech aspect of movies. Mainly the resolution. And the 90's were a great decade for movies! Internet changed a lot since the 90's, but not for good, as far as I can tell... 🤷🏼‍♂️ Nice reaction! Have a good one! ✌🏻

1. The music rights alone must have cost a small fortune.🤑🤑 2. Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis. 3. This retired sailor agrees ships/boats need a female name. 4. Having gotten his degree Forrest could have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. His ASVAB kills that. 5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around. 6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date. 5. Jenny did indeed give him the best gift ever (it wasn't the shoes) 8. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony. 9. It's ironic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he loses his. 10. At the rally Forrest says, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that." 11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking. 12. Observation: Bubba's not a small dude. Forrest carried him with a bullet in his ass.😲 13. "Sometimes I guess there're just aren't enough rocks"🥺 14. Haley Joel Osmentt/Forrest Jr. steals the show in "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis.🤩 15. Often when he's finishing a segment about death, he ends it by saying "That's all I have to say about that" 16 Keep in mind if Jenny wasn't wasting her life seeking men like her father and was with Forrest he/we wouldn't have had this incredible journey.

Another mostly comical, but sometimes touching movie was "The Bad News Bears". Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 97% rating. Walter Matthau plays an alcoholic, former baseball pitcher, hired to whip a team of little league losers into shape. It's funny and heartwarming. Walter and those kids were GREAT together.

I graduated from high school in Savannah and I was there when they filmed this. The bench is now in a museum in Savannah. The Vietnam scenes were filmed in Beaufort, SC which is about 45 minutes away

He even got to meet John Lennon and inspired some of the lyrics for Lennon's iconic song "Imagine". Lennon; "No possession's" "No religion too" "It's easy if you try" Dick. That footage was from The Dick Cavett Show. John was the guest on the show in 1971. It aired at 11:30 pm, I was 14 at the time and remember watching it. Pretty damn cool that was in this movie. Mother Gump was Sally Field, who played everything from Gidget and The Flying Nun on tv in the sixties to the Big Screen playing opposite Burt Reynolds and James Garner as romantic leads. That was Coach Bear Bryant of the U. of Alabama, who retired in 1982 as the winningest college football coach of all time. The Yippy in the flag shirt who introduces Forrest at the Lincoln Memorial was Abbie Hoffman - counterculture hero. Jenny was always trying to run away from her past, namely her molesting father, and even suggested Forrest do the same rather than face his oppressors - it was her default answer to problems. You need to watch THE SIXTH SENSE (1999) with Haley Joel Osment (Little Forrest, Jr.). The truth about tipping off the cops at the Watergate Hotel break-in was actually an alert security guard who found a parking garage entrance door had the striker taped over, which prevented the door from locking. He removed the tape - and found it taped over a second time, so contacted his supervisor, who informed the DC Police, who caught the 'White House Plumbers' in the DNC headquarters offices. They were CIA 'sub-contractors'. The scandal was the cover-up. They just took license telling a story that Forrest phoned in the tip...

My Mom seriously looked exactly like Sally Field in this when we were kids. It freaked us out. We were convinced she had a secret movie career. I sincerely cried when she died, every time. Still gets me sometimes...that's all I have to say about that...Tom Hanks is absolutely brilliant, even when playing a local idiot. I love when LT. Dan comes with his "magic legs" made from the same material as the space shuttle to his wedding...the next year they were in Apollo 13th together! When Forrest asks..."Is he, is he smart?" That was meant to break your heart. One of the most clever, hilarious, heartfelt films ever.

You need to look up all the historical references in the movie to see how this was ground breaking when it was made. It was a technological first. The movie started Gary Sinese on a path to helping veterans and their families for the rest of his life. He tours the USO circuit with the Lt. One of my all time favorite movies. What I took away from it is that even if you are a simple person, or considered nothing special by others, there are amazing things happening all around you. Look at all of the things he did and the people and places he experienced. The way he affected the world around him, even without realizing it. This movie told me to stop always thinking about tomorrow and look around you today. Something amazing might be happening right next to you. Take a moment to appreciate it. At least that was my take-away. The scene where Forrest asks Jenny if Forrest Jr is smart or like him is one of the most poignant scenes in the film. It lets us know that Forrest actually knows his limitations, that he actually does understand how he's different. It's really the only scene in the movie where you see that from Forrest. Also, "Those were some short shorts". Yep, that's how shorts looked back then. Back in those times if you were to wear big baggy basketball shorts below the knee, people would have probably pointed and laughed.

Four months of rain, it's called the monsoon season. Comes nearly every year, unless you get a drought. There is an old remedy if you have a sore throat, make toast and leave it in the toaster, to get a bit hard. Take a piece of raw garlic and rub it into the toast on both sides. Butter it to make the taste easier and eat it, once a day. It worked in ten minutes last time I got sick, i've still got the cold, but I'm a lot less miserable without the sore throat. Get better soon.

Forrest excelled in anything simple and when he was told what to do. His perceived lower IQ and simple mind allowed him to live a simple life and not overthink things. Good things happened to Forrest and him impacted many people. He played a role in many American historical events

You realize that he is absolutely aware of his "limitations" compared to others but he has never let it define who he was or what he was capable of doing. He was terrified that his son might have to go through the same thing. That level of self awareness is, ironically, far above most people.

Back then, the movie posters didn’t say Tom Hanks AS Forrest Gump, they all said “Tom Hanks IS Forrest Gump”. He and the man that played Lieutenant Dan went on to be in other movies together. Another GREAT movie, and one that they are both in and are both amazing in is Apollo 13. The way they did it was to animate the mouths to look kind of like they were saying it and then using voice actors that could mimic the famous people.

A lot of abused children grow up to become adults with a lot of problems. From addiction snd alcoholism to abusive relationships and legal trouble. Sadly, it's far too common.

Number one favorite movie. I cry hard every time… The meaning is so rich and it’s one of those movies that just makes you appreciate so much, so many little things. Forrest is the epitome of innocence and simplicity working together, always knowing the right thing to do, as we all do, but not having the hindrance of self clouding his judgment. He looked straight ahead and did the right thing every time. “A promise is a promise Lieutenant Dan” “Why are you so good to me? You’re my girl” “Is he smart, or is he like me?” “Sometimes, there just aren’t enough rocks.” …so much more… Brilliant. ❤ We all need Forrest.

The entire movie is Forrest meeting famous historical figures 1- Elvis in his home that he taught how to dance 2- the Alabama coach in the checkered hat was the legendary Alabama football coach Bear Bryant 3- the flashlight at the hotel that Forrest called in was the watergate hotel that brought down a US president (President Nixon) 4- the virus Jenny had was AIDSin the early 80s when it didn't have a name yet

Great reaction, you two are so wonderful and genuine. This is one of my favorite movies ever. From Elvis to AIDS (or Hep C in the book) Forrest Gump is the story of a generation; the historical touchstones, the music, the traumas, and the philosophical questions we wrestled with. The movie is so full of historical tidbits, it's fun to watch and see which ones people recognize and which are already being lost to the march of time. It's interesting to see Forrest be so simple and accepting to everything that happens. Meanwhile Lieutenant Dan reacts with anger after his destiny is thwarted. And Jenny spends most of her life trying to escape her childhood trauma, constantly running (flying) away or trying to dull the pain with drugs. When she is up on the roof, the background is the guitar solo from Free Bird, and you noticed the birds flying as Forrest walks from her grave.

there's a documentary about the making of the movie its very good ! all the effects on the old clips were done by industrial light and magic, and how they did Lieutenant Dan without legs !

In the book it was she died of hepatitis c, which wasn't identified till 1989 ... the needle and the damage done....

Common sense says it was Hep C in the movie, too. Director said HIV a few years ago but that’s just dumb, because doctors knew full well what HIV was, they just didn’t have meds for it. It was clearly HCV, given the movie timeline and her “they don’t know what it is” line.

There was a show on the Discovery Channel called Movie Magic that aired from 94-97. I was in high school at the time, and I watched every single episode that aired. I learned a lot about the industry because of this show. They aired an episode about how they did the visual effects on the movie. I believe you can still find a full episode on KZbin about it. I absolutely still love this film.

The shock at the bus driver smoking made me chuckle, as I grew up in the 70's & 80's, and it was allowed pretty much everyplace. Just wait until you guys get further in to doing reactions(and older films and TV shows), and you'll see what I mean, as "Jaws" is a classic, but it has a smoking scene that shocks most when you see where it takes place.
