Our Boy Scout Troop #72 from Mineral Wells, Texas hit the road one sunny morning on the old Texas Fort Trails. Fort Belknap was on this route, Mac Howell was our Scout Master, Mike Penry assistant. This was in the 60's.

Fort Belknap is fast becoming a premier travel destination for all of Texas. As much of Texas history is about Mexico's influence in the South, frontier northern plains Texas is illuminated here at this fort. Strategically placed along the Butterfield Stage route from east to far west Texas, this fort was occupied in hopes of keeping the peace between the white settlers and the residents of the Comancheria, or Comanche Nation. History is as thick here as the buffalo herds once were with encounters between these frontiersmen and native Americans. The lore of Lonesome Dove, Sons of Katie Elder, and The Searchers developed the story lines of these classic Hollywood westerns. It is a must see for history buffs interested in the Indian wars, US Army on the frontier, cattle drives, and the taming of the West. Museum and facilities are scheduled for updates in 2019. Come see now so you can compare the before and after. Free admission. Only county owned fort along the trail. Fort Belknap Days is scheduled for October 26-27. Come and see this unique event. Only a couple of hours west of the Metroplex in the Brazos River Valley of north Texas.
