Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport flooded by drenching rains

A flash flood emergency was issued Wednesday night by the National Weather Service for Broward County after storms dumped as much as a foot of rain on some areas of South Florida.

I landed at around 2:30pm yesterday 4-12-23 at FLL (pilot was a pro). Got the rental car and departed airport to massive rain. Headed to west palm beach on the highway and had to stop several times due to poor visibility. Experienced strong rain and hail for at least 30 minutes. I’m from Tucson and this ranked up there in terms of intensity with strong weather events I have experienced in my life (monsoons, dust storms, 2003 Colorado blizzard). The freeways here seem to be well engineered for drainage as there was not large standing water on the side of the road. In Arizona, it would have been a river. This was no joke of a rain storm!

Here since 3:30 for a 6:30 flt. I may not get to GA til Friday. We were told to leave the gate to get baggage if flt was cancelled. Couldn’t get back to gate… there was no TSA to screen. It’s 3:36. My flight leaves tomorrow afternoon 12:38 i pray🙏🏽

Wow that’s some really bad flooding! Fortunately I have not heard of any deaths from this flooding. That’s a small miracle in itself. That’s almost catastrophic level flooding. That’s not as bad as what Hurricane Ian did to the Ft. Meyers region. However, that’s still a huge mess that will take a long time to recover from.

You are about 130 or so years off. Google Florida tourist development history, follow the University of South Florida link for a really cool link. I found it to be a good read. There was a PBS show with an episode about YEARS AGO too . . . ;>) And actually most of Florida is above sea level most of the time. Something to think about though. This was just a rain storm, what they going to do when the Antarctic ice melts? The Greenland Glacier? I would be looking to sell and run now while it is still usually above sea level. Nobody is going to buy a house with a swimming pool in every room on the first floor. Waterwings and life jackets will be popular. Could be a money maker . . .

They build their homes back in the same spot and then the rains come and wash them off the side of the mountain? What do they do? Build there again!! Maybe the ones that build their homes on known flood plains, get washed out and build it in the same spot again? Or the ones that live in a city below sea level? Could it be those living in a desert and wondering why they don't have enough water? Our cave dwelling ancestors knew better. My condolences to all that have lost to these disasters the first time and to all that have lost loved ones.
