Man, this take's me back...! Jersey was then such a beautiful, unspoilt, carefree place to grow up.

Thanks for posting this brings back good memories of when Jersey was good. Dark times for Jersey nowadays maybe one day some one will restore it.

These were the days. Go swimming, play some Golden Axe outside the viewing gallery and then sausage & chips in the cafe. Jersey used to be a cool place.

I worked in the cable car ticket office in the 80's. Also worked in the Postal Museum and Titania's Palace. Fort Regent was such a fun place and with lots of people around. There was loads for kids to do and an afternoon show for them - i remember getting very tired of hearin 'Rupert, Rupert the bear ...' while there. Pity it can't be restored to somewhere for tourists to go and take their kids. I say a resounding NO to a hotel (there are enough), housing and a casino. I like the idea of shops, skateboard park, pool, crazy golf, educational stuff, FUN THINGS, shows - saw quite a few concerts back 'in the day'. Come on powers that will make these decisions listen to the islanders and help to give tourism a boost.

First Holiday in Jersey - June 1980, the cable cars had stopped running not long before, lovely view over St.Helier and St.Aubin's Bay... so much has changed over the years, and a great lot not necessarily for the best 😟, and Fort Regent effectively left to rot 😥

The cable cars would have been running back then. It wasn't until late 80s or early 90s they were discontinued.

OMG this is fantastic, if only we knew what a mess Jersey would end up in I think we would have appreciated what a fantastic Island we 'originally' had, Doesn't it look lovely with the old harbour and old Tourism ahhh and the Fort, well it really was before its time then what a state it is now it really is a disgrace that it has been left to go to such a ruin, don't tell me the Island doesn't have enough money to regenerate the cable cars and the swimming pool!!?? Great Vid though, wish more

Nope. I remember the aquarium, but I don't remember the shark. There *might* have been a shark on the exterior, but that's about it for me.

my Grandfather and Father where plasterers for Regals,who done the work on Fort Regent.they where (both R.I.P now) the unoffical first people to use the cable cars.they where ment to just be testing them by sending up bags of plaster,but they jumped in the last car themselves. i as a teenager in the 80's spent all my free time up Fort Regent,just like most people of my age.unfortunatly today there is nowhere for teenages to go and thats why i feel they are classed as trouble makers :o(

What a shame the ' Cable Cars ' are gone, The States of Jersey have let The Fort get run down , by closing The Pool also, sadly now a shadow of what it was Years Ago !
@Locutus
@Locutus 5 ай бұрын
The pool was at the end of its life when it closed. It would have cost millions to bring it up to date. Why bother when you can get a private business in to build a new swimming pool (Acqua Splash) at no cost to the public sector?

I've just been to St Helier and I kept seeing this futuristic building on top of the hill. It reminded me of some of the buildings they have in central Florida around Orlando. Why exactly did the cable car and the building stop being used? It seems like a bit of a shame.

@@ajs41 Jersey had its peak in tourism come the 80s, but once package holidays to Spain became affordable, there was a lack of tourism in Jersey and Guernsey. Places like Fort Regent were expensive to run, and as people were not using it as before, it became expensive. Fort Regent Leisure Centre was in the right place at the right time, but that time has ended.

It was probably one of the shortest cable car rides ever! The video suggests it took about 30 seconds to reach the pylon, and then a bit more to the upper cable car station. For the first bit of that ride the view was mostly of the car park below which wasn't exactly scintillating! If only they had had the vision to site the cable cars at the Weighbridge side things might have been different. Easy access to the Fort has always been a problem, so putting the lower cable car station next to the bus station would have made much more sense. And the views of St Aubin's Bay would have been much more dramatic. The Fort's leisure complex was visionary when it was first conceived, although it was diluted down as it got built. But the real problem (as others have pointed out) was that Jersey's government simply became uninterested in the tourism industry because it preferred finance. The brutal truth is that Jersey didn't 'lose' its tourism industry. It turned its back on it.

Whilst I largely agree with you, the States have never shown a disinterest in tourism, far from it. Come the 90s when you can fly to Spain for a similar price to Jersey, why bother going to Jersey? Go to Spain or Portugal, and you're guaranteed good weather and your pound goes twice as far as Jersey. What did you expect the States to do? Discount everything by 75% to make it cheaper than Spain? Jersey will never be as cheap as Spain or Portugal.

I think it is around 1983. If you look carefully at the zoom shot of the Esplanade you can see the West of Albert reclamation wall had just been built, but not infilled. As I recall that scheme started in '82.

thats right,you payed around £2 to get in for what ..free swimming,free live shows,free fairground rides ect.its alot better now that you get in free and pay atleast £5 to play any sport they offer there. i think you might want to rethink that,as i like many other kids who where teenagers in the 80's spent almost every weekend or summer holiday up there.whats there for the kids today to do ???
