At the 8 minute mark, that's a WW2 US Navy 5"38 gun mount, with a ~ 10 mile range and a 55 lb projectile. I was a loader in one my first trip to VN.
@eatportchops
@eatportchops 9 жыл бұрын
s schuyler The gun mount caught my attention also. My GQ station on the USS Davidson home ported in Pearl Harbor was in that type of gun. The thing I found interesting was that the computer used to calculate the fire solution on a moving ship was all analog. No electronics all gears. I can't remember for sure but it took a crew of 5 or 6 people in the mount to run it. That does not include the people in the magazine and upper handling room.

Les Smithfield Actually 'My' 5'38 was in the next model, the twin mount. Also my GQ station on my first deployment, I rotated thru the hot caseman (Fun chasing 20 lb red hot powder cases), powder loader, projectile loader, fuse setter and the rammer positions.On my next deployment, I was a FTG-3, (Fire Controlman), so I worked on that 2 ton computer, although mostly I lived up in the Director in GQ.Much better than humping ammo... :)

My father was in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. It was his 21st birthday. He was on either the USS Perkins or USS Jarvis. (I'm sorry dad, i never could remember which at that time!) he never talked a lot about the war, but he did tell us that the ammo was usually brought up top by a couple of men, but with the stress and adrenalin pumping, lone men were lifting boss up on their shoulders and climbing ladders by themselves. My dad passed last January at 93. A good good man who was so proud of his shipmates, his country.

s schuyler So they separated the powder bags and enclosed them in cylinders to reduce the power which could explode right? Reminds me of an early day Battleship the way an elevator is used to transport ordinance, separation of the powder and shell, etc. Compare the Iowa's BB61 and Missouri's BB63 big guns to these! Note they never called the Missouri's guns the big 406mm'ers, they were always the big 16 inchers.

You two are raising a fine young man who will be a wonderful human being as an adult. We do tend to blossom when fed the Living Waters of Love. Someday when Wranglerstar is no longer the thing it is now he will watch these and smile, maybe tearing up at the same time, maybe with children or grandchildren of his own. I still remember my trip with my parents some forty years ago. Loving the LORD with ones all and loving others as oneself--there is nothing better during this vapor of a lifetime. Thank you for sharing these moments with us. May you and your family continue to be richly blessed indeed, brother.

The last time we were at Fort Stevens the rain was horizontal it was so windy! You guys got a perfect day! There is matching fort called Fort Columbia on the Washington side of the Columbia River as well. Major ports and river ways were protect by string of forts and observation points on both sides. There is/was impressive array on both sides of the entrance to San Francisco Bay.

A young pilot launched from a Japanese submarine off the coast of Southern Oregon during WW2. Long after he was actually the grand marshal of the Azalea Festival parade in Brookings, Oregon (It was inland from Brookings that he had released the bomb many years before.). He also donated his family's samarai sword to the city of Brookings and has hosted many students from Brookings at his home in Japan. There is now a peace memorial at the site where the fire bomb had struck. I visited it many years ago. It is a long drive, make sure that gas tank is full.

The coastal fort defense in the PNW is fascinating. Be sure to check out the defenses at Fort Columbia and Cape Disappointment State Parks. These combined with Ft Stevens to command the mouth of the Columbia, would have made any naval incursion very costly.....before airpower. There are four coastal forts on Puget Sound that are all state parks now, too........Worden, Flagler, Ebey, and Casey. They all have unique features to explore in and around their locale. We get our BSA troop to at least one of them every year, the boys think of it as a great time.....they keep choosing to return. Cody, get Dad to take you to one of the MVPA events.....you'll love it!

The ads are always different, but this video had an ad about an energy company keeping electric rates affordable at 11 cents per kilowatt. To think I was complaining last month when our local coop sent out a rate increase letter, saying that the rate was going up to 7.8 cents per kilowatt. I guess the grass really isn't greener on the other side. I'll pay my bill and be thankful for my blessings.

At 2:55 I think those could have been voice tubes(not sure what they are called). Assuming they ran down to where the munitions and powder were stored and to where the commanders would be directing fire. They'd yell down the tube to tell them what to send up or listen for commands.

Actually a Japanese submarine fired on a refinery north of Santa Barbara during WW II as well. Also, Oregon was also the site where balloons armed with incendiaries during WW II which resulted in casualties - hushed up during the war for security reasons. The operation which was the catalyst for these shelling incidents is a very interesting one! Boy, Jack is an excellent reader, those books are paying off!

Those guns that drop down behind the parapet are called Disappearing Guns. There is a much larger caliber disappearing gun at Ft. Casey on Whidby Is. here in WA. It is peppered with shrapnel nicks, as the guns from Ft. Casey were sent to the Phillipines, and captured by the Japanese. The breach blocks from them were sunk somewhere in Manila Harbor, to keep the Japanese from using them. Back In the late 60's the state parks dept. had one brought back and installed at Ft. Casey. Ft. Stevens is much more complete in artifacts than Ft. Casey,

Those retractable guns were called disappearing guns. As soon as it fired the recoil would push the guns back down so the enemy ships wouldn't be able to locate them while it was being reloaded.

So in regards to your comment about when is a boat a boat and a ship a ship. I'm not quite sure when that is but I'm in the coast guard and we have cutters and boats and a boat is a boat until it's 65' so in the coast guard a 65' vessel and up is considered a cutter. The navy guys might know but all their vessels are ships. Anyways love your channel been watching for a while now. Keep it up.

Thank you so much for this video! As my former wife, & I visited the site,summer 1994 as we where flaging North of Tillamock, after my major eye injury in November 1993 whal tighting wraps on my log truck, between Astun Junction, & Prairrie Cioty, Oregon. So much change, and it is so much harder to travel, on a disablity income, and now having moved from John Day to rural New Plymouth, we are right on the eastern edge of Oregon, and travel across the state is inpossible for us! Even the travel to Portland, which I am sapost to do yearly because of the injury is impossible with the $1,000.00 left for us, after we return our tithe, and run not one, but two ministries! For more information on these go to www.testoftimeministries.org. God bless you as you ministrer all peoples on ways to improve thheir lives, & lifestyles. Youhave been a great souce of knowledge, and encouragement to us! We need to find some non KD sawdust / chip to see if it will help our poor soil, it is so alkalin, we can't germinate a carrot! We planted poplar trees on 2 sides of our property (1.7 acres) to help re oxigenate, since we live right on State Highway 52, and the bevers fell everyone oof them within one month of planting! Again thank you for the time you put into your you tube ministry, that is truly what it is! You turn peoples eyes off them selves and to the bigger picture of what God would have them to do! First time posters, Randy & Patrecia Freitas P. S. Stared watching your channel for low cost woodworking ideas (which I use for pain theropy, in the place of so much drugs! and got hooked! It is so refreshing, instead of the old look at me channels! Again God bless you, and your family!
