Thanks for the excellent video on your ride down Fort Road, I was born in Detroit and left in the 70's to college and now I work in Kansas City Mo but I get to come back to the Detroit area for my job a couple times a month. My Father worked for the Wayne County Road Commission for 40 years and I remember the stories of the timed traffic lights on the main streets in the area and I seen the blueprints of I 75 being built as well as I 96 and I 275 as a kid and I was fascinated by everything it takes to build a road, but the most important thing was riding with my dad listening to am radio wjr and check in on his road crews and salt and snow crews out of the Wyoming and I 94 yard near downtown Detroit , I will check out your other videos as well thanks for your detailed information and commentary Peace and Blessing to All

The routing of the Fisher Fwy is what killed this area of Detroit. I lived on Dragoon St. between Lafayette and Fort Street. The neighborhood had three movie theaters on Fort Street -- the Lincoln, the Rex, and the wonderful Hollywood Theater -- second only in size to the Fox Theater in downtown. I walked four blocks to Gillies Elementary School on Junction and Lafayette. Walking along Fort St. toward downtown was a drug store, funeral home, pool hall, Sanders Bakery, two dime stores (Neisner's and Kresge's), bar/restaurant, record store, Detroit Savings Bank, auto repair garage, Western Auto hardware store, a Paynes retail outlet, and a Coney Island Hot Dog restaurant which was crowded with woman who worked at the nearby Turnstead GM plant wearing their required work uniforms. The freeway construction demolished nearly every house standing between Lafayette and Fort Street for miles which displaced the flourishing neighborhood's customers. It wasn't crime that killed a great deal of Detroit -- it was poor planning that put automobiles ahead of people.

CrotchWolf, Yes, all along Jefferson (Biddle in Wyandotte), the downtown is rather nice. I wonder if Chris Harden could drive from the beginning to the end of Jefferson. I just moved to the Detroit Metro area back in August, with my job I actually have a building downtown on Fort Street. I like that people say from California, think all of Detroit is a warzone. I just moved here from Denver, and all those people from CA are moving to Denver, believe me that isn't a good thing, they make things outrageously expensive because they vote for the same policies that made them leave CA to begin with! Also they don't understand 4 wheel drive/ or all wheel drive doesn't stop you from sliding on ice.

@@ChrisHarden Yeah that is true! Well I know people in Co that think the Flint issue is all over MI, and I had someone ask me how far from work I am, and I said it was about the same drive, and they were like, "Yeah but not through a war zone here!" Which isn't true, they got rid of the camping ban in Denver so now you walk around you may end up in an meth head encampment randomly there.

There were quite a few at EMU from the downriver area when I was there. The girls from Trenton, Southgate and Wyandotte all had that super shagged hair and black leather jackets. There was a bar in Wyandotte called Capt'n Ahabs off Biddle Ave that was packed on the Weekends and even week nights. Booze, drugs, music like Lynyrd Skynyrd and those same girls. Most in the crowd worked in the plants. In Lincoln Park, a friend was stabbed in Johnny's Pioneer Inn. Hard drinking plant workers would fight if they didn't like the way you looked. The dividing line between LP and Detroit was exactly that. Crossing into Detroit was only to travel thru. There wasn't much there except trouble. Most would hop on I-94 to downtown.

Tried living in oaktown when I was younger. Troy was like a parking lot of stressed out people and road rage. Downriver’s got a lot less stress than Oaktown where every few years there’s a murder suicide because someone could no longer afford to perp the image and lifestyle and they lose their mind trying. One way you know your downriver is when you play golf along sibley, someone always screams fore! out the window of their car. It’s a real mix, but at least going two miles takes 3 minutes versus Troy where it’s a half hour. We need more restaurants and I don’t know why we don’t have them because everywhere you go, it’s a big wait where oaktown has plenty of that stuff. I’m glad they moved the Detroit teams out of oaktown and back to Detroit so it’s not such a drive for us downriver. The teams are out of Wayne county after all and more our teams than oaktown’s even though that side of town acts as if the world revolves around them or something. Our cruise isn’t so hot, but then again, neither is Woodward which is just one big traffic jam for about ten miles. The problem with our cruise is the cars actually move and people do burnouts and drive like nuts. Wyandotte is a very nice town with a nice downtown area that’s happening. I expect Wyandotte to keep improving as it has been for years. 35 years ago, Wyandotte was a town of junk houses but not anymore.

Feel disappointed. Fort street picks up for another two blocks on other side of campus martius. Not really just a parking lot and garage, and a cool narrow bar, but a good footnote to add. Found this channel the other day and enjoying the drives. Would love to see a John r one with the one way into downtown, around commerical park. The blight of highland park, and the varying landscapes up to bloomer. Also a good footnote is that it's the easy west divider of detroit as opposed to Woodward which it parallels for some length before turning due north about 6 mile

I grew up in Wyandotte,, and agree with your characterization of it being a nice and interesting place. There have been intermittent urban renewal initiatives, but the economic base was undermined severely by the closing of the heavy industry (Wyandotte chemicals, penn salt, etc) and the failure of BASF to develop the facilities they bought from Wyandotte chem. Still, it,s not a bad place to live-I long ago moved to Chicago, land of random shootings and smash and grab shoppers.

Maybe this is an un-popular opinion, but I like the Michigan lefts. I also like how you can often come across waves of green lights when driving on a single road throughout the metro Detroit area. You can get from point a to point b quickly without having to get on a freeway. I’ve lived in other metro areas where you will almost always will hit a red light every time you approach one while driving along a major thoroughfare.

@@ChrisHarden definitely true about the lights! I’m in Colorado, and I will attest that the legal u-turn here is far more dangerous. With the exception of when people sometimes don’t expect the Michigan Left and then cut across lanes to get there. I just found your series and subscribed. Nice seeing shots of home. Got into a nice car accident right there at Fort St. and Clark about 10 years ago. She still owes me $500. Gave me and the cops fake insurance.

We're in big bad Detroit? Just change the music on this documentary and it wouldn't seem so bad. You can walk, drive or bike ride in any part of Detroit without worrying about being a gang victim, you can wear any color clothing you want, most crimes in detroit is personal. Let's make no mistake about it, Detroit is no different than any other major city in the US, (and I'm not going to call them out because of respect to them) ppl are taught from birth: DETROIT=BAD PLACE.
