🔴 ENG The fortified church of Mălâncrav has three naves and a bell tower and was built at the beginning of the fourteenth century by Nikolaus Apafi's son, Gregor. The international Gothic style sanctuary was rebuilt in 1400. The current form is due to interventions that took place at the beginning of the 20th century.
The current evangelical church is mentioned for the first time in the will of Nikolaus Apafi. Another important act for the history of this church is the one issued in 1424 by Pope Martin V on the right of Nikolaus Apafi to grant indulgences in the chapel of the Holy Blood.
This chapel, disappeared today, served to the last remaining Catholics after the Catholic Reformation and was positioned next to the church.
Above the altar can be seen the coat of arms of the Apafi family on the vault key, blazon surrounded by the inscription GENTILE SCUTUM APPAE.
The true "treasure" of the church in Mălâncrav is his mural painting, the best-preserved ensemble of Gothic linear-narrative painting from the fourteenth century, the frescoes being made around 1350.
There are 53 scenes as pictorial which are arranged in five registers, they are a true quintessence of the creation revealed by the Old and New Testaments. Similar frescoes are also found in churches in Homorod, Mugeni, Drăușeni, and many stylistic similarities can be found in Slovak paintings. It is speculated that Ioan Apafi would be the donor of these paintings.
The scenes painted in the choir of Mălâncrav are characterized by a great detachment from the constraints of the church painting and they are a fine example of Gothic style which spread through Bohemia and Slovakia to Transylvania starting from Italy and France.
From the enclosure that once surrounded the church only a simple wall belt was preserved and the first levels of the gate tower.
