Oh man ! I suppose you should understand ALOT about tires then ... And here is one question i can't seem to find a GOOD answer , which is - does changing tire size 1 up ( front from 110/70 to 120/70 and rear from 150/60 to 160/60 ) would have a big impact on grip ? That would be on my soon to be Ninja 400 , hope to get an answer and thank you for you time reading !
@gordonblackley8863
@gordonblackley8863 5 жыл бұрын
Cig4ras It would give no positive effect on grip, but would very likely give a negative effect on the handling. The reason behind this is that contrary to common belief friction is completely unrelated to surface area. The main reason for larger tyres on powerful bikes is heat dissipation. A 125 race bike will corner faster than a super bike on their narrow tyres. Oversized tyres on the same rims will alter the profile from the design, so will give unpredictable handling. I hope that helps 😊
@Cig4ras
@Cig4ras 5 жыл бұрын
@@gordonblackley8863 Thank you very much ! Guess I will stick to stock sizes , just better rubber :)
@gordonblackley8863
@gordonblackley8863 5 жыл бұрын
Cig4ras The real trick is getting the right tyre, track rubber often gets nowhere near its working temperature on the road, so you will often get far more grip on the road out of the sports touring rubber; these are exceptionally good these days. Enjoy 😊

He is entertaining but how do you KNOW the information is "quality" Is innaccurate "quality" because I find of it innaccurate like his rating of the S22....wonderful handling tires that seriously wear FAST! 600 miles to the wearbar stock MT-10 ridden by old man in the twisties....balanced and proper psi no burn outs or ANYTHING abusive other than spirited pace on public highways...I loved S22s until I realized how fast they WORE OUT! Yet Ryan contradicts this.....

Dude... You've really stepped up the in depth detail on this channel. It's always been interesting but it seems lately you're going more in depth with technical things average consumers aren't privy to. Hopefully your future "what is the best super sport, hypersport, sport touring, touring tire for my bike" follows this trend with details and examples of how each tire performs in each situation. I think many people would be surprised to see a sport touring tire would handle just fine with most average riders even on a track day where they get hot. But just telling them that and reading the company brochure for each tire doesn't prove that to anyone. Thanks for the great videos lately and I can't wait to see what's next.

F9 has pretty much broken KZbin for me. With the exception of motorcycle.com's content everyone else is frankly useless in comparison. Even if it was just the slick presenting and beautifully punchy and entertaining editing they would still be the best, but they also go deeper into the science and details that other channels wrongly think aren't interesting. The depth of impartial knowledge and experience is glowing too. There's so much show, but just as much go, while still being entertaining.

Last time I did any real continuous riding was 20 years ago. I ran Bridgestone S11 exclusively. They gave me incredibly reliable grip, even when bald on the centerline, and I could corner my V45 Magna hard enough to put the pegs on the ground. Those now seem to be rather hard to find. Now I know why, and I'll be looking into the availability of the S22 for my current ride. Thanks for the info, and now I understand a lot more. You ROCK!

It is true I think. The reason is that OEM tyres have a different compound which is specifically made to get better ratings at safety relevant tests for example the stability of the tyre an so on. However I don’t think it’s so bad that you have to get an instant replacement, just use your OEM tyres up if your buying a brand new motorcycle. The first set of new tyres will bring the better quality anyway. 🙂

@@gafferjoe I have to assume big box outlets distribute more tyres through private sales than motorcycle manufactures purchase in a year. Even if they are purchasing all the same tires for each model bike. They make several different models requiring different tyres. Furthermore, I doubt many manufacturers are brand loyal longer than a year, if at all. It will typically depend on the cheapest tyre or contract that gets the job done.

Dude, this is easily one of - if not THE - best tire video I've ever watched. I truly learned a great deal from this video. I'm a big fan of explaining the science behind things so that I can better understand why and how to make a decision. Beyond that, it's just super cool. :) Well done sir!

Man thank you so much for the video. You always manage to teach me new stuff in a well presented way, and don't get me started on the production quality: beyond expectations every time. I can only imagine what you guys would be able to achieve with a larger budget, but you'll get there. Much love from a true fan!!

Factory Bridgestones on my Yamaha bolt were crap… threw them out asap and grabbed a set of Michelin commander II’s. Much much better traction, profile and wear. Awesome video F9 crew! Thanks

One thing that this great video shows is that one really does need to keep on top of new developments. The last motorcycles I put tires on were a 2007 R1 and a 2008 Buell 1125r. With the Buell I matched the rear tire as closely as possible to the front sticking with Pirelli. That was a poor decision since those tires wore quickly without a traction advantage. On the Yamaha I replaced the factory Pirellis with Michelins although the front tire was one year older that the rear. Today it seems like the Bridgestone s22 would be a far better choice. By their nature front and rear motorcycle tires are very different. Unless you are riding at the limit, which belongs on a race track, I believe mismatching front and rear tires is just a matter of learning the nature of the handling with the new tire. A motorcycle shop where I bought the rear Michelin for the Yamaha is a great example for learning the handling of a new tire or set. We got discussing that and the owner told me I would be shocked by the number of riders who dropped their bikes leaving the parking lot. That was caused by the rider ignoring the standard shop advice to corner gingerly until the mold release agent is worn off.

This is another great video. One element that you didn’t mention but which is important is the tread symmetry. For street tires I highly recommend using tires with asymmetrical patterns, especially those whose grooves cross alternately towards the center of the tire. Why is this important? Anyone who has ever ridden across a bridge that has metal grating has felt the tires (especially the front) wobble as it tries to track with the grating. The same is true when riding on roadways that have had the top layer of asphalt removed prior to laying down a new coating. At best this can be distracting and at worst it can be dangerous. By using tires with asymmetrical patterns, they don’t try to track with the grooves. At the very least the front tire should be asymmetrical, and ideally both should be. It’s amazing how much easier a bike handles with these tires.

🏁🚨Info is always to such extent that very little questions are unresolved and videos are very informative, but at this stage i would (and i think alot of followers) would like to see a in depth review and some testing done on sport tires( s22, power rs, corsa 2, racetec rr, Q3, ) to actually separate the cream of the crop. Just as done with chain cleaner, chain lube, oils, helmets etc. Put some track time in and test lap times test abrasion , put a load on them on a rotating surface and apply torq to see slip/skid level, pressure changes, temp and so on. I know it easier said than done but wil be worth it and would love to see it as tires are the biggest grey area for alot of riders. Keep up the awesome content,🌋😎

When I bought my 636 the back tire was bald. I ended up going with the Battlax S22, It's amazing in the rain, and provides even a typically cautious rider like me the confidence to push the tire right to the edge. I recommend it to everyone.

Hello there @FortNine! First of all i want to give you a big thumbs up for the quality of your videos and for the total effort you give to make such a quality content. Now. I have a Honda XL Varadero 1000cc and I am going to change my Bridgestone Battlax A40 to something else just to try a different brand. I am not a "off roader" guy and i use my motorcycle for long distance trips and daily drives in the city. I've done my research and i am close to Pirelli's Scorpio Trail 2 are the best choice. (i have a 110/80 R19 at the front and a 150/70 R17 at the back) It would be a pleasure to give me an extra hand with your knowledge and point of view for which tire should i choose. Greetings from Greece and keep up the hard work.
