Me and my friend messing around on Forza 4 seeing how spectacular the crashes look and how it affects the cars.

Me and my friend did something like this, I was driving a Ferrari 458 Italia and he was riding a Nissan GT-R, we were trying to collide into each other at full speed, the results were hilarious.

The physics are much better than the actual damage to the car, especially the aesthetics. Somehow the cars always manage to stay basically completely in tact and all the paint disappears lol, but the way the cars respond to impacts is top notch.

If we ever will have a racing game where our cars could go through fences, it would make the actual crashing into whole new level, these days racing "sims" we are forced to stay within the track, no matter how high your car will fly. As a veteran of FM and GT series, I dont see either damage being better than in another, the actual car wont change shape in either, FM has funny "un-paint" effect and in GT5 metal twists in weird way. While Mechanical damages are pretty much the same.

You're absolute right, people should not fuss so much about the damaging the cars in games, especially if the games aims to give the driving experience with cars that rarely no one sees in real life.

in forza 4 you hit objects so hard, the paint will fly off your car so fast that the laws of physics wont have enough time to implode the car itself.

As are the GT5 ones. Drive 300kmh into concrete wall or barricade (or a net made out of rope) your car bounces off like nothing happened.

Finally someone who prefers physics over damage! I compare Forza to NFS Shift 2 because of the fact the both Forza and Shift have al of the cars (even the FF cars) slide out excessively under cornering, ehile GT5 actually has the FF cars show signs of understeer.

grids got like 40 cars in it, which i guess they were able to get the licensing for, and I'm sure GT and forza could get some of the licenses, but not for all and it would look bad having uneven damage in the game so they just keep it on the low side

If you're saying that lvl 40 in GT5 has any effect, you'd be wrong, PD released the info about it and the damages wont "grow magically over the levels" so if you want full damages on GT5, just hit into a race / practice and set mechanical damages on, and tire & fuel consumption aswell. Afterall, GT5 atleast makes fuel to have some actual mass, unlike this ultimate simulator called FM4, now someone should take a quess "What fuel consumption has anything to do with the cars"

I've played both Forza 4 and GT 5, they are about equal. Damage model and crash physics to Forza though.

Their is way to much elasticity in the crashes. This is probably due to the connections but it still is an eyesore when playing. The first car like bounces back when in fact it should propel up and forward over the fiat. Physics FTW!
