Foster carers get a fee for themselves and a child allowance for the child - this only showed you the allowance per child NOT the fostering fee too. Fees and allowances are paid weekly to carers

They only get a fee for themselves if they’re fostering for an agency. No fee is given to those who foster for the council, like most foster carers, including the woman in their report 🙂

@@Uglybettyrules That is totally not true ......... even LA foster carers get a fee for themselves. This information regarding child element and fostering fee is public knowledge if you look on the council website. Foster carers do not do this without payment.

It’s not just the weekly allowance given to foster carers that needs to be addressed, it’s that it needs reframing as an actual job- which it is. I am 35 and have been a foster carer for over 6 years, is there a pension with it, no. A Teaching Assistant gets paid more than me per day, and they have the added bonus of school holidays and weekends!

There is a very similar situation regarding Shared Lives Carers. Shared Lives Carers provide homes and support for adults with physical and or learning difficulties, I and many of my colleagues have not seen any meaningful pay increases for years. One way that the government could perhaps help both Foster Carers and Shared Lives Carers is to increase the Tax allowances which have not changed in about 20 years. So while the tax incentives would have been attractive to carers in the early 2000's many cares now find themselves facing tax bills in the hundreds if not thousands, increasing the thresholds may see the exchequer experiencing a small decrease in tax revenue but would save the Government and Local Authorities having to find millions in order to furnish pay rises. Though this is not a perfect fix, it would at least provide a boost in revenue for most carers providing support for 2 or more people. The rent and housekeeping paid by 'Scheme users' is also controlled by local Authorities and we are not permitted to increase those rates no mater how much the cost of living rises. Our particular scheme was given permission about 3 years ago to increase housekeeping by 15p a week!

Hi, yes we agree. One of our recommendations in our report and our government petition is to review the tax allowances for carers as it hasn't changed for many years.

Me & my wife are certified foster careers we also have 2 FCs the government should look at the tax threshold limits for Foster Careers this has never been adjusted for nearly 2 decades. It’s shameful. To recruit new foster careers needs a complete overall.

No it's not! The local Authority gets £1000 per child in London the Foster carer does all the work and and doesn't even get half of that weekly payment!
