At the Robinia Institute in Central Virginia, Savory Hub leader Daniel Griffith is developing bold, new initiatives to bring the land-regenerating potential of Holistic Management to farmers and communities of the Mid-Atlantic.
In this short film, we follow Daniel's latest endeavor, a partnership with The Lands at Hillside Farms - a historic Pennsylvania-based educational dairy farm that wanted to find a better home for their bull calves.
Instead of going the feedlot route, Robinia is re-homing these calves to local farmers where they will provide substantial marginal reaction. As a Savory Hub, Robinia is also able to offer these farms training and implementation support in Holistic Management, land verification through the Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) protocol, and access to financial resources through their Common Wealth Network.
“The eradication of control is in many ways the application of community function from a microclimate perspective. It is the idea that community emergence happens in microclimates, and it is through the interdependent relationships of these microclimates that we find a resilient, beautiful, and highly functional whole of communal abundance.”
Robinia is pioneering this “calf donation network” to transpose what is perceived as “waste” in one sector and turning into abundance in another; inoculating communities with regenerative power by focusing on the power of community and its ability to transfer potential energy in one hand to healing power in the other.

Why donation? Why not a custom grazing operation, or a replacement heifer and bull/steer operation working in partnership with the dairy? The dairy should get paid for the animals produced as a byproduct - the cull females would make good nanny cows to handle the calves up through weening. There are quite a few ways to support the dairy and support additional businesses without adding stress to the dairy.

you could add value to dairy offspring by using a different breed of bull that is maybe beefier

Depends. If they want to save some of the heifers to rejoin the dairy herd, then you wouldn't want to use a beef breed bull. Otherwise, it's a good idea & I'd be surprised if they haven't considered it.

A different perspective is if cows were left to themselves would we come back in some years and find both a distinct beef and dairy breed among them?

Yes, to some eating meat is abhorrent to some - but to others it is part of culture, part of nutrition, part of life. Sure eating 200 eggs from 1 chicken vs just eating the chicken makes sense, unfortunately life is a lottery. Not all animals are female. Not all males are exceptional in desired traits. That is where the meat market begins... Males are not valued as much as females.
