10 Sperm and penis facts
Here are some amazing facts about sperm and penises .
1. The testes, in species that are promiscuous the testes are much larger than in monogamous species. Gorillas are monogamous with an average testicle is 30g but chimps which are promiscuous 120g. Humans are 50g and chimps are a third of our body size so relatively their testes are four times the size of ours.
2. Sperm trains - In the wood mouse the sperm have hooks and can attach to each other forming trains of hundreds of thousands of sperm which increases the motility
3. Men (human) produce kamikaze sperm with two heads/no heads and no tails, these sperm cant fertilise the eggs but can stop other men's sperm from getting to the egg by destroying them with enzymes or just blocking their path
4. Blocking entry - European dwarf spiders produce a plug, which is liquid and then hardens to block the genital opening of the female. The more time in copulation the bigger the plug so the harder it is for other males to be able to copulate as well.
5. Four heads - the echidna has a penis with four heads, only two ejaculate at once though, why? Nobody knows.
6. Shape of the penis - spines, brushes, barbs or hooks to scrape out sperm of previous males. Some dragonflies have a whip-like flagella to remove rival sperm. They can be very effective. Human sperm can remove 90% of sperm from the reproductive tract.
7. Replites and sharks actually have two penises. Sharks penises are called claspers they can have hooks to anchor them in place but can also be attached to siphon sacs filled with sea water which can be to either spray the sperm into the female reproductive tract under pressure or they could be a sort of jet wash to clean out the sperm of the previous male.
8. Singing penis - water boatman can rub their penis along their ribbed abdomen which can create sounds of up to 99 decibels which is the equivalent of listening to an orchestra sitting on the front row.
9. Penis fencing - Flatworms are hermaphrodites , they have both male and female parts eggs are more expensive to produce than sperm to when two flatworms meet they fence with their penis to try to impregnate the other without getting impregnated themselves.
10. Detachable penis - argonauts which are a type of octopus they put their sperm into a detachably tentacle called a hectocotylus then they swim to the female and fertilise her females can store several of these from different males so she can choose who will fertilise her eggs.
