How dangerous are cannon balls you find ? As far as digging them up and hitting them with your shovel.

Very exciting finds! What strange feelings it gives to think about how much that landscape has changed since the late 18th century, how much history has gone by, and how horrific the conflicts surrounding that land must have been. It was bad enough to realize that, in that time, a whole lot of people never lived past their mid-40s, and child deaths were so common. Our ancestors were tough people forged by hard times and considerable suffering!

Yeah, and now spoiled people whine and cry because they can't get a video game they want... Guess that's better than a revolutionary war though...

In regards to the cannonball, if it were solid as you said, it would weigh more than 4 lbs. I pulled a 6 pounder out of my backyard and it was just about the size of a baseball. I'm no expert in the study of antique ordinance, not even close, so I may be full of bull. I'd just be real careful cleaning the rust off. Great video.

At 13:32 the cannon ball looks like it might have originally been strapped to a wooden sabot -- the tin straps have rusted away, leaving just an impression of where they were, and the wood sabot as also rotted away. If that is what it is, it probably was not fired since the sabot and straps usually fell off when the gun was fired. Wood sabots and straps were used in the Civil War, but I am not sure when it started, probably not as early as the Revolution. For a 4-pounder, the would sabot would also have had the powder in a bag tied to it, so the gun could be loaded with "one motion."

Being that the coins and buttons are from the 1700's,, one can "almost" assume the cannon ball is as well, unless further evidence concludes otherwise. How exciting to find King George coins on American soil, from the very year at the start of the revolutionary war!

Was there some kind of stone in the ring? You kind of breezed over it really quickly, so it's not easy to have a good look. For me, personal objects are the most interesting, as they were the most meaningful possessions to the long gone individuals of so long ago. Even a simple little ring, if only it could talk...
