You should check the Georgia state law... even in Over regulated Maryland where I live, you can ask for a receipt for the gun and under the finders/keepers laws, the gun is yours unless it can be verified as part of a crime. You have to give them several months to investigate the weapon, but then they have to give it back to you. Know you rights under the law.

Tristan, I’m in agreement with Maryland Dan. Even way over here on the Left Coast, short of criminal involvement, finders keepers. Suggest recontacting Columbus PD reference their followup investigation. However your ‘Found STOLEN Military Rifle’ leads me to believe you already did find out the weapon’s background.

If it's military issue, it's an M14 assault rifle, issued in the Vietnam era. Since then, the M1A rifle was sold on the civilian market beginning in 1974. It is essentially an M14 without the full-auto capability. Nice find!
