Why are you testing for asbestos?? It's been years since any was used. I do have some asbestos rope left and i protect it hard.
@trashandtrailСағат бұрын
@@markthompson2079 It's a requirement in Oregon when disposing of an RV to present an asbestos report with testing. You'll be turned away otherwise. And the report must be done on a contiguous vehicle...can't rip it apart because then you'd have to test each piece. Asbestos was used up to 2004 in RVs but like you and your stash...folks have used sealants in repairs that contain asbestos...so essentially everything needs tested. And realistically we're talking about 2-3 percent... it's hardly a trace. But if we want to take it to the dump...the test is one of the prices of admission. Excellent question and thanks for asking!

good grief do people there have no respect for the back country. dont get me wrong we do have some issues here as well but nothing as bad as that. thank you to you and the volunteers that clear it all up. you do a great job. and quick question what is BLM land . is that public land or some land management land? here we have crown land and PLUZ public land use zones.
@trashandtrailКүн бұрын
@@davebloggs All public land. Our lack of viable policies for assistance and support, high cost for proper dump fees and rejection of a lot of refuse is spilling into the woods. We're the worst solution to the problem because we simply can't pick it all up...micro trash...plus sewage into creeks and defaced trees. Thanks for watching, thanks for giving a darn!
@davebloggsКүн бұрын
@@trashandtrail The policy here is you can camp etc where ever you like on crown or PLUZ but only for 14 days max. if im out and set up camp everything you bring you have to take with you when you leave, . what they do here occasionally is have free dump days, so you can bring along all that kind of crap dispose of it correctly and it costs nothing other than time. it is way cheaper to do that than the costs associated with cleaning up illegal dump sites. after long weekends such as May long we do get some stuff left in the forests but the next weekend every body with a truck and trailer , are out cleaning up. and mostly the dumps are free on that day for stuff removed from forests etc, and if no free days people will just pay the dump fees, as it is better to do that than have the land closed off to people , we do respect our lands and forests here in Canada and it is a matter of pride to make sure it is as clean and tidy as humanly possible. . we have city homeless camps ste and the city provides large garbage containers that they empty regularly so that sites dont become to bad, it is about helping the less fortunate and not about making a profit. it is cheaper in the long run that is for sure.
@trashandtrailКүн бұрын
@davebloggs We have similar rules but absolutely zero enforcement of law and policy... little support from our law enforcement, prosecutors and judicial system. Our dump's fees are high, and the rules of what you can and can't dump are difficult to navigate. I'm hoping these videos start a larger dialogue such as this and help us affect real changes.
@davebloggsКүн бұрын
@@trashandtrail We have many many conservation officers here and they do monitor sites, both with people and cameras etc. our mountain fire watch system also helps because black smoke in the mountains stands out really well and trust me light a fire burning garbage will attract attention real fast. I was camping one time a few years back we had one of our doozy thunderstorms come through I was soaked so got a good fire going afterwards. I had 2 lightning strike right at my location. no flash bang just ear splitting crack. . my fire was giving off so much smoke in the damp. sure enough 10 mins later helicopter comes by to check for forest fires starts etc, nope was just me., signalled all good and off they went. We do respect our forests here. A solution for you guys would be to do the free dump days. we did that after our bad floods in 2013 , all flood related stuff was free dump all on a honour system and it worked well. the city collects all the scrap metal as well and sells that to offset some of the costs, but it is about helping not just making a profit. keep up your good work, you guys do make a difference and that is important in a world that does not seem to care so much anymore.

I didn't know the situation in the forests was that bad or that you guys even existed. Thanks for your hard work. I don't think most regular, legitimate campers leave that kind of trash around - pack it out, right? But party-ers, maybe druggies and others who probably don't have much respect for themselves and so don't respect the beautiful land they live in. But gosh, it takes quite an effort to haul an RV all the way out there to dump. I live south of there in Josephine County - do you know if there is a group like yours around here that I could volunteer with? How can I donate to you folks? Again - thank you so much.

Part of the problem is lack of places for the campers to get rid of trash years ago dumpsters were all over. In areas with campers and there were a lot more law enforcement in the woods both state and federal. One of my friends retired from the forest service he drove thousands of miles citing and arresting people doing this stuff. Looks like he wasn’t replaced. Its always been a problem but seems out of control now in some areas. I believe its still a crime to litter and dump on state or federal land and blm is usually 14 days and move two miles or get arrested
@trashandtrailКүн бұрын
@@George-wz9xd Absolutely agree. They got rid of the dumpsters because people were abusing the privilege or vandalizing them. Which simply lead people to dumping it on the ground. Our law enforcement means well but they've been told by their bosses to stop enforcing unhoused issues because of the legality issues surrounding all the supreme court decisions. That and our federal judge allegedly has stated he doesn't want to see any of these cases in his court. Something's got to be done. This is out of hand.

I'm just curious. After you report trash on the app, what happens? Who does what, meaning the clean up?
@trashandtrailКүн бұрын
We, as in Friends of Fall Creek Watershed...our non-profit we founded to clean up our public lands...gets the pictures and GPS coordinates. Typically we'll head out to the site and verify conditions, if it's an RV we might take asbestos samples for testing...sometimes we need the interior cleaned out before we can test. Then we report the trash to the responsible jurisdiction. Vehicles and RVs get reported to the LEO...law enforcement officer...we typically provide VINs so they can sticker the vehicle and we wait the allotted time...forgive me for not knowing the exact amount, but it's less than 14 days. Assuming it's Willamette National Forest land...we have a cooperative agreement to be reimbursed for dump fees, asbestos tests and mileage...we schedule a cleanup and get to work volunteering. The waiting bit is the hard part...often as not scrappers and arsonists beat us to the RVs and either torch them or rip them apart and scatter pieces everywhere. If it's not FS land...then we report the trash to the responsible party...BLM, Army Corps of Engineers, County, State or private landowner. We offer our assistance. We've negotiated with the BLM on some trash and it often takes 2-3 years to get authorization for reimbursement for the trash fees. (Case in point we're still waiting for permission to pick up 100+ tires around Eagle's Rest.) One way or another we're super grateful for the trash reports...we can't find everything. And if the trash isn't in our area and you need help figuring all this out let us know and we'll be happy to help you find the right agency, people, process or procedure. Excellent question and thanks for answering...I'll work with Steve and we'll try and answer this on video!
