Simon is right, disc golf is at a smaller distance scale than golf with a much larger target. You are never going to make the scores comparable to golf without making the holes really challenging for no reason or outright changing the pars. Embrace what it is. He’s not saying make it as easy as possible, he’s saying embrace that it is easier than golf and a different sport
@itritchey
@itritchey 7 ай бұрын
I agree it should be embraced for its difference. But I want to share that the “bigger target, smaller distance” comparison can be misleading because the lack of clubs and disc vs. ball travel. Golf technology helps all get some distance, and despite the hole being tiny, putting greens are consistent and roll reliably - although the basket is big, it is always raised, so throwing it in means it is in the wind and come-backers are always going to be somewhat substantial

A sport is only as easy as the competition allows it to be. You're not competing against yourself. That is why disc golf is easier than golf. If you swapped the pool of players, disc golf would be considered a lot harder.

I think what Jerm was trying to say is, he wants to prevent the spit outs. Like what Ken was referring to, so few chains that it the disc hits the pole and comes back out, or a basket so shallow that the disc flops out of it, those examples aren’t rewarding accuracy.
@clintsawyer7702
@clintsawyer7702 7 ай бұрын
Climo is saying it should reward accuracy AND touch. He compared it to putting in golf, if you are 10 ft from the hole and you hit the ball with 30 ft worth of speed, it's going to hit the cup and bounce out even if you are dead center. You've got to have the right aim AND the right amount of power, wear contrast with current disc golf baskets, you can be 30 ft away and chuck it as hard as you want and if your aim is good it's still going in. It doesn't require touch.

I've played on baskets with one set of chains. They do less catching and more swinging wildly and throwing your disc out of the target. It's almost a deterrent rather than a spot to aim for.

I think Simon’s point is that he just wants well thought out course design and we just need to accept that because putting is relatively easy, there will be a few players that shoot a ridiculous round every time. It’s just the nature of the sport that hitting your lines almost guarantees a birdie.

When someone calls me when they find my discs, I usually tell them to keep it. Unless it’s the same day or very recently lost. It feels good to know someone is excited to find a new disc for their bag! I put my name and number on all of my discs. On the flip side, It feels great to reunite other disc golfers with discs I find. Overall, everyone should try and reunite owners with discs if their phone numbers are on the discs. Great discussions here, keep up the good work! Jason

Brodie, the comment about pros "sucking" reminds me of Brian Scalabrine. Big goofy ginger, used to play for the celtics. Some local prospect basically called him out, said he sucked, and challenged him to a game of 1v1. Scal had the best answer, "I'm closer to Lebron than you are to me". They ended up playing and Scal shut the kid down entirely.

Maybe the difficulty of the course should be the difference in elite, elite+, and majors. The harder the course, the more prestige and the better the payouts. If you have easy courses, you have less separation, and a lower prize. On another difficulty note, I personally would like to see more switching up the course between rounds of the tourney. Changing pin placements, tee pads, OB lines etc. Makes players use their impromptu skills, more decision making, and creates variability for the audience and reasons to tune in to ALL rounds and not just the last one.

The pro tour has such an easy opportunity to tackle the basket market. Build their own. Same basket size, Chain assembly goes from 26 inches wide to 23inches. Just to start. I would probably go out and buy a $400 "Pro Tour Target" "Putt with the pros"

Watched live, but thought of this after.. I agree that scoring needs to more fair in the disc golf world, but in my am3 opinion, changing target size would really alienate the AM side from the pro side. For example 100% of disc golf coarses would become outdated unless clubs and parks officials dropped thousands to replace outdated baskets. This would make it extremely hard for new players to break their ways into the pro ranks and help the tour expand. Secondly making the target smaller would almost eliminate the Ace and thus get rid of disc golfs "Home Run". Yes harder putting might lower scores and better seperate at the highest levels, but as a main stream sports fan in the US, I've never seen an 80ft putt for par on SCtop10; but a 250+ft throw in has made it countless times. Fan's aren't tuning in to watch highly skilled pros play par golf. Fans want to see ace runs and pros playing extremely well on coarses they may struggle immensely on themselves. I think changing the targets may be a long term solution, but could significantly impact disc golf in a negative way if it happens to quickly or the wrong way.

This was very well spoken. The home run analogy was a great piece in what you said because it highlights a certain point, it’s something that makes your heart skip a beat almost because of how exciting it is to witness that live or on tv. That excitement is something that helps viewership, viewership may seem trivial but that’s how you keep getting bigger sponsors and bigger payouts for the players which will in return make the sport more lucrative. I don’t personally see a need to change the scoring system at all, if a guy shoots -18 that’s an incredible feat and again exciting the entire way to witness, it’s not like with high scoring that you still don’t have to play well and it still generates a healthy competitive atmosphere. Another good point was the infrastructure change of having to redo baskets all over the world, these parks are often taken care of by the city’s parks department and that is all taxpayer funded and that kind of infrastructure change would probably be a very slow process and costly for honestly no reason

They would need to reduce the target size while increasing it's ability to catch and prevent spit outs. That would be fair, and difficult to accomplish. Otherwise you'd be watching more pros taking layups instead of running the target. A 50ft putt can miss n fly 30ft in the other direction. A 50ft putt in golf could go no more than a couple inches or a few feet past the hole. Easier to get it in, but punished harder for missing.

Whereas in disc golf you have the ever-changing wind that affects your disc selection, angles and power etc, in bowling the constant wearing down of oil patterns forces (competitive) players to quickly adapt to it by changing the strike line, balls, amount of hook and power. I.e. Bowling has strategy and game management just like e.g disc golf.

My personal take on what could help with the super low scores is the fact that disc golf has the same concept as regular golf in the aspect of the two put on the green. On normal disc golf courses. A part 3 is anywhere from 200 ft. To 400 ft. And you are expected to reach that basket in one shot and have a two-put. In my opinion, if you reach that basket you should have one putt so maybe change the game to where we implement part two's, three's, and force instead of counting on a two-put on the green. Just a thought

I think the size of the final target is one reason golf is harder than disc golf. If you're 15 feet away from a 4-1/4" diameter hole with a 1.68" diameter ball, it's a lot harder to make that than an 8" disc going into a 66 cm diameter (26") basket. Good putting PDGA pros make 90%+ from circle's edge, but that same length putt on the PGA Tour probably only gets made 10-15% of the time or less.

Biggest problem with a lot of current disc golf baskets is the chains don't sag at the bottom. When they're tight they have a lot of tension that tends to snap back and push the disc out of the basket when the disc hits the chains. It's one of the reasons the Mach X catches so well, maybe a little too well, but I don't think the basket should be actively spitting out discs.

I would find the tour more interesting if different events had different approaches to these questions. Some events have smaller baskets, some events have baskets with less chains or shallower baskets, some events are shooting -15 on average and every hole is a must get, some events are shooting even par. Rewarding just one kind of skillset and trying to standardize everything makes every event and every hole feel like the same.

Thank god we wont destroy the sport so that you can find it a little bit more interesting. I think wind reading 3d aiming and speed controll is enough of a skillset to have for putting. We dont want everyone having to buy 10 different baskets to practice on because thay are all different. Interesting does not equal good. A rule where inside circle putting has to be thrown by a monkey is interesting, doesn't mean it will help the sport in any way.

People need to stop trying to think the game needs to be the same as golf when it can be better than golf. I do agree we don't need fake difficulty... Like one of the courses around here just has a line of trees with small gaps 50ft in across of the T Pad. It's just a throw a disc you don't mind smashing and pray it gets through. It's dumb. Courses can be challenging by having sharp direction changes requiring you hit a landing zone to set up for the next drive. Or requiring very specific lines to get down the fairway. If they wanna make the basket a smaller target but also designed to reduce spit outs, that'd be worth it sure... But you also need to think, more difficult putting means more lay ups instead of running the basket, since our frisbees will glady fly 20 feet past the basket on a missed putt vs the few inches a golf ball might run past.

in regards to Simons comment about bowling. The pro's typically average around 230-240 so they are striking a lot but not all the time. Over the course of the last like 5-10 years the USBC has made several changes to determine what a legal ball is and the PBA is constantly changing and developing's new oil patterns to make it tougher. I feel like we need to sometimes keep disc golf disc golf rather then compare it to other sports where in Simon's case he seems to know nothing about bowling. I feel we are often to quick to make comparisons without knowing all the information first.

Also to add bowling on the pro oil patterns is much different then if yall go open bowling. I average 216 in league on a house pattern but average 187 on sport league that uses pro level oil patterns. pro's don't strike a lot because its easy they strike a lot because they don't miss. Also there is alot of decision making in bowling as the oil depletes on the lanes you have to decide, do i move left, do i move right, do i switch balls. The point wasn't that bowling was easy for pros. The entire point that was being made was how things LOOK to outsiders watching. Most people who don't bowl don't even KNOW the lanes are oiled in certain patterns, or at all for that matter. How many non-bowlers watch pro bowling? Not many. But millions of people watch pro sports that they don't play like football, baseball, hockey, etc because it looks challenging. You can see it. The point that's being made is, disc golf in some ways falls into that category where unless you've tried it, you don't realize how hard it actually is, because these guys makes it look like it's easy to throw a disc 500 feet and hit putts from 60 feet away, and walk away shooting -15 down. So he's in favor of making things more challenging for players, without using gimmicks like artificial OB, silly stuff on greens, etc. and things that rely on luck. Just actually make it more challenging.

I like the fairway hit stat as it is when it comes to par 3 and par 4 because it’s giving you a comprehensive view of how successful off the tee you were in a round, instead of needing to look at fairway hits and GIR for a course with a mix of par 3 and par 4s, but I agree par 5s should be only the tee shot for the reasons Brodie gave. Maybe the stat just needs a new name like “Tee Success Rate” TSR or “Drive Accuracy” or something like that.

Great interview Brodie with Calvin. For disc golf to ever equal traditional ball golf, and get the respect of the PGA and its members, look at 3 rules in ball golf that disc golf should follow. More rules should mirror ball golf rules. In ball golf, you must carry only a maximum of 14 clubs. In disc golf, a player can lug around as many as he or she desires. Set a limit that players can use during a round, especially in tournament play. Secondly, course designs are adding more and more OB on holes to test accuracy of tee shots(mostly for drive or approach shots, but OB around the greens). In ball golf, when you hit a ball out of bounds, it usually results in a double bogey, but never a par like you can score in disc golf. Going OB should be a major penalty and not just playing it as a scoring strategy. An example would be if you are just playing for par on a hole, and OB circles a small green, the player deliberately throws OB and gets a drop close to the basket to make a par. If you go OB in disc golf, there is way to much par makes from the scramble mentality in the game, I like USDGC's hole #17 for the OB rule in the game. If you go OB off the tee, on an approach shot, or any shot, the penalty should be just like in ball golf....a 2 shot penalty. Lastly, disc golf presently is primarily a recreational sport and to grow the sport, more and more players are being hooked on the game. When we see how many new top PDGA pro tour players are making their presence in tournaments, and the competition is getting tougher and tougher, that is a great sign of disc golf's progress. Lastly, for the game to really get the respect of not only the PGA, but from all other sports, the target basket is surely a major issue. You will never change the type of baskets used on courses everywhere. For at least the tournaments that are played on the PDGA Pro Tour(in the USA and in Europe), only only type basket should be used on that course, especially if it is a major tournament. Use the Innova Discatcher, Discraft Chainstar Pro, DGA Mach X, Prodigy T2, of MVP Black Hole HD Portal, Dynamic Discs Veteran, or Latitude 64 Elite for all events on the Disc Golf Pro Tour. It must be voted on by the PDGA and finally disc golfers and ball golfers can say, both our sports have the exact same course hole types to make a score on. Yes, you are going to frustrate several disc golf basket manufacturers, but the Disc Golf Pro Tour would get fewer negative feedback from viewers following our sport.....especially if it ever makes it on major TV coverage on NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX Sports coverage in the future. My message summary: follow traditional ball golf much more closer, and the money and sponsors will be attracted to the sport more effectively, and faster. I am a former 9 handicap ball golfer and a PDGA member since 1993. I am a lifelong promoter of the game. I love to promote the sport and appreciate your efforts with these You Tube videos. It would be an honor to have top pros come to my ace run course 40 + tee options( 9 permanent baskets & 5 portables positioned) around my home in Uncasville, CT that I established in 1996. Communication is everything and Brodie you are doing a super job of that always!👍Sincerely, Bill M., PDGA member #7378, NEFA member #94....Happy Thanksgiving !😋

I like Simon's take. The ball golf comparisons are so tired. How many people are shooting -16 at any tournament? Not hardly any. People act like this thing that has happened a few times ever is like the norm or something.
@jockofthebush
@jockofthebush 7 ай бұрын
It happens all the time. Most pro tour tournaments and a lot of lower tier MPO events are won by players shooting double digits under par. There are often multiple players who go that low in the same event and the difference between them ends up being so minute. THAT is the problem. If you have to average -10 or better to win an event, it makes it much more likely that a random spit out, rollaway, or skip OB will be a major factor in the final results. That’s when the sport looks flukey. We need more courses with lots of stroke separation so the “flukey-ness” is not emphasized. There is no stroke separation when every player in the field is either getting birdie or taking par.
@turdferguson1945
@turdferguson1945 7 ай бұрын
@jockofthebush it hardly ever happens. I understand the desire to use a number to add to a point, but point me out "all" these 16 under par scores happening at pro tournaments, and you'll see that it's not happening very often. Edit: I'm talking about one round, because I think that's what simon was saying. And if people aren't winning with a score of more than 16 under over the course of a three or four round tournament, I'm going to say that that isn't very fun to watch. I'm not sure what some people's obsession is with par, but birdies are more fun to watch.
@jockofthebush
@jockofthebush 7 ай бұрын
@@turdferguson1945 You’re sidestepping the actual point though: Yes, birdies are fun to watch but so are bogeys and stroke separation in an event. Disc golf events are actually somewhat boring when it comes to who can be in contention. Most players in the field fall out of contention after the first day. Disc golf events will be even more entertaining when no lead is safe and players have to keep their focus up to the last hole.
@Discsforbaskets
@Discsforbaskets 7 ай бұрын
@jockofthebush Simon's point is that right now the way we are getting stroke separation is because of the flukeyness with hole design. That's not a good way to go. If we are talking less separation or more flukeyness then ill go less separation. More exciting to watch 10 people in contention at the end than 2 players and it coming down to a rollaway out of bounds 10 feet from a basket.

What makes disc golf great is how easy and accessible it is to get into. The cost of entry is low and frankly the game isn’t crazy difficult. I started in June and I am already able to birdie or par on every hole in my area. Not saying I do every time. Realistically in the professional tour people just want to see insane and interesting throws. Personally a wide open 1000 foot drive with artificial ob isn’t interesting to me. A 400 ft hole down a corridor with thick brush and trees and no ob so they have to throw it from the rough if it goes off to the side is more interesting. Going out of bounds and then throwing from a drop zone isn’t really all that exciting

i believe the disk golf need to be harder to keep the challenge, i have played for 27weeks and i hav just played my first 18basket round 1 under par, on a brand new professional designed course, 8some say it's easy to be an inclusive course, but less than half a year of playing is just to fast to be in par or under) i think that baskets should be like the training "pro baskets" that would make putting more like golf (where i come from) the second i get to -9 on 18 baskets i can't se where i can progress within reason by training... fairways that get wider the further out would make sense to reward longer throwing players?? (this point I'm not certain about) course design need to ensure that you are forced to use more different disk's and make sure you struggle if your you only have a forehand or backhand, and if you only throw basic throws... in my opinion what makes a sport great is that you have to be well rounded in all aspects of the game.... skill has to be rewarded! AND SKILL HAS TO BE VISIBLE INSTANTLY for any non player that watch their first TV broadcast. one of my favorite examples is formula1, where many and team strategy have made it boring for me to watch, the last great race i saw was monaco in the rain where Schumacher outran everybody by pure skill in driving in pouring rain.... (but who know, maybe Ferrari had cheat mode enabled on with traction control 🤪(traction control was not in the cares at that time) but my point is skill has to be visible.... and required....

Putting does not need to be harder. Only with the top elite pros in calm conditions does it seem a bit much. Other than that, no one needs to see more misses. Especially in FPO. I'm a huge FPO fan but the putting other than a couple people is pretty rough. If anything, FPO needs bigger baskets that catch even better. It would encourage more runs and limit the crazy number of short misses at even the top level. Ohn is an exception and a couple other players but I'd love to see an actual top 25 FPO 22 foot putt percentage. My guess is it's pretty bad. But even most of the touring MPO field doesn't need tougher putts.

Yer not going to see that in darts or bowling... or corn hole

I don’t care what the final score is in a round, what I care about is that the scoring is close. I hate watching a tournament when somebody has run aways and has an 9 stroke lead going into the final round. I want to watch a close race, 5-10 guys that have a chance at winning. So it doesn’t matter if the scores are higher or lower what matters is that there isn’t too much scoring separation, and that players have the opportunity to score and overtake someone for the lead. Sports are all about creating a story, nobody likes the blowout story, it’s only fun to watch for the first half.

Lost disc story- I found a disc, text the number on the back, the guy responded saying his is out of town and asked me to hold on to it. I said sure let me know when you are back and I will find a way to get it back to you. The guy texted me a week later asking for my address so he could come get it. I didn't want some random guy coming to my house. So I went to the park left it under a shed and sent him a picture of where it was. He was upset because he thought someone would find it before he got it back. In what world do you ask for a random persons address?!?

If he told the guy what disc it was the guy he called could say "oh, yeah, I sold that disc last year to this guy" or something.

I think there needs to be a balance. You don't want every course to have guys shooting 17 under a round, but you also don't want courses where the contenders are shooting even. Fpo is guilty of that, and it's not always a good product to watch. Also you want enough wiggle room where people can make comebacks. If people are shooting regularly 15 down. You can very well be out of the tournament in 3 holes. And that's not fun

@@FoundationPodcasts I think especially on the media side of disc golf that some think they are entitled to stuff for free. Like the people who complain about having to pay for DGN or the guy in the comments complaining about having to pay $2 to join membership to get in the live chat. Stuff costs money. Peoples time isn't free. At some point people have to get paid. People talk about 'growing the sport' but then don't seem to want to make investments into the sport. This podcast isn't going to grow without some monetary support. Live coverage isn't going to get better without monetary support. Also, from the standpoint of a company looking to invest in the media side of disc golf. What are they going think when they do some research and see half the comments are people complaining about having to pay? I don't see many companies investing not knowing if the fanbase is going to be supportive or not.
@elliottschmidt2446
@elliottschmidt2446 7 ай бұрын
Typically the complaints about having to pay are also complaints about the quality of what they would be paying for. Most consumers evaluate their purchases based on a relative ratio of cost and return. If the quality is poor enough, people will feel inclined to complain about the associated cost, since the aforementioned ratio is perceived (in this case, rightly) as out of balance

@@elliottschmidt2446 I'm well aware of the complaints about quality of DGN. I have subscribed to them for several years now and trust me I have my own list of complaints about DGN but they've definitely improved. It was better this year than in years past. The thing is though there are justified complaints and then there are people complaining about things that nobody can control. I think especially speaking more recently that a fair bit of the criticisms are blown out of proportion because of the past.

I think bringing the baskets back closer to the original design would be a great move. Few players have "touch" inside 45 feet when putting. I learned on those baskets and I'd give up the random occasional ace shot to see it happen. If you're just gonna run everything from C2, you had better have your 22-footers dialed in.

I agree with your comments on the current courses on tour. Players get better scores on similarly built courses and gimmicky greens don’t make up for for over all course design. competition can bunch up more and more if there is not something to separate players. Courses designed by players to make things a bit more challenging would be a welcomed Next step in the sport.
