Where does the term “ cultural Marxism” originate? Is it a relatively new term?
@aknig514 жыл бұрын
@@tanyaoldenburg8201 Thanks for the question. It is a term that grew out of an understanding of the efforts in the 1920s-1960s to move Marxism from strictly an economic dialectic between the have and the have nots to a philosophy of oppressed/oppressor. From an Italian named Gramsci, to the development of the Frankfort School (Germany) of thought, to the transfer of faculty to Columbia in the USA. The idea of 'critical theory' emerged, developed, and embedded in the social sciences. There are other elements that fed into 'Cultural Marxism" but this is one that is easy to trace. The impact to religion, determinism, and materialism is extensive. The danger goes beyond mere philosophy or viewpoints as it is subject to despots and autocrats who seek power and will do so to the destruction of true freedom and independence.

Did Voddie ever get around to providing a brief (two or three sentence) definition of what he means by "Cultural Marxism?" Here are some definitions I found online: Cultural Marxism is a left wing conspiratorial attempt to wreck American culture and morality. Cultural Marxism refers to left-wing cultural criticism. Cultural Marxism is a left-wing variety of cultural authoritarianism: a tendency to criticize movies, video games, and other cultural products in a very harsh way that implies a need for government censorship. Cultural Marxism is the cultural turn within Western Marxism since approximately the 1920s and especially after World War II. Cultural Marxism is a kind of behavior that looks for power imbalances in everyday culture (like asking a person where they are from, or complementing a black persons hair) and problematizing those interactions, causing people to resent others for innocuous little social misdemeanors. Cultural Marxism relates to crisis theory employed by the Frankfurt School of Marxist intellectuals. Cultural Marxism is a far-right antisemitic conspiracy theory which claims Western Marxism as the basis of continuing academic and intellectual efforts to subvert Western culture. Are any of those definitions of Cultural Marxism close to the way Voddie defined it in his sermon? Thanks.

Like many great theologians and philosophers, his introduction is extremely long, because he is anticipating all of the thinking that we'll go on that will prohibit people from hearing what he is saying because of all of their pre bias and false information upon what they think he's going to be saying. That being said, the introduction takes 22 minutes. However, there is so much meat in the introduction that if you have a thinking brain at all and time it is worth listening to in entirety. -- What is Voddie's definition of Cultural Marxism in one or two sentences? No one has been able to tell me. I use the term "Cultural Marxism" to mean a theory which posits that a tiny group of Jewish philosophers who fled Germany in the 1930s set up shop at Columbia University in New York City and devised an unorthodox form of "Marxism" that took aim at American society's culture, rather than its economic system. Is that what Voddie means?

Voddie, thank you brother. You may have thought of this as a dry academic discussion, but it really ministered to my heart. I have for years been concerned with reaching out to the least of these, and I am concerned about addressing injustice in society. On the other hand, I have been feeling this growing barrier between myself and brothers and sisters of different backgrounds, and because of these very issues I have not even felt the ability to talk to them. My skin color and sex have become an original sin / mark of Cain for which I have to be in a constant state is repentance but for which there is no real grace. Having grown up with legalism that lead to suicidal guilt I am well practiced in knowing how to hold on to guilt and the need to work to please a demanding God. Having found freedom in His grace, this demand that I return to a state of constantly guilt over a new original sin flies in the face of the God's grace that I have come to know and live in.

-- Hello from Texas. How are you ? I'm 13 minutes into the video and Voddie hasn't told his audience in a few sentences what he means by the term "Cultural Marxism" (CM). When I hear the term, the idea that pops into my mind is a conspiracy theory with an anti-Semitic twist, being pushed by much of the American right. What comes to mind when you think of "Cultural Marxism?" Thanks.
@littlemas23 жыл бұрын
@@moatengator6047 Well, for me now, I think of Gramsci and the Frankfurt school and the intentional linking of Marxist class theory to various intersectional cultural groups that are now considered oppressed. I have continued to study the issue for the last couple of years and understand somewhat better what Marx himself believed and how those beliefs were taken and built upon by 20th century thinkers. I recommend Carl Trueman's book, "The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self" where he gives an intellectual history of much of modern thought. In short, Cultural marxism is the belief that the primary problem in the world is oppression from the dominant cultural group (white/European, Christian, male, ci-gendered) who have established society in such a way that all the institutions naturally privilege them, and the solution is to tear down the oppressive structures so there is equity (meaning equal outcomes across those cultural groups.) Until such time as there is equity, we need to continue in "the work" of "anti"-(fill in the blank of oppressor group).
