We just saw this movie yesterday and had two theories: -Calvin is not martian, but he's the reason Mars is a lifeless desert. -Calvin caused the malfunction that unpressurised the atmosphere in the chamber and was pretending to be dormant when they were poking him with the electric stick.

It should've had a lab that is capable of fully detaching itself to the station, or have an advanced defense system e.g. fire or ice. They had "firewalls" in place but obviously the characters in the movie screwed all that up.

I think one important thing you left out was that Calvin grabbed Jordan’s arm while he was piloting the ship into deep space. Jordan was attempting to steer away from Earth and Calvin seemed to know Jordan’s motive and grabbed his wrist prying his hand away from the control. Now I was trying to figure out if it was on purpose or was Calvin just trying to maintain control of Jordan and just saw his hand moving. It’s a cool thought that Calvin might have been some sort of ultra intelligent being or became more intelligent as it consumed more matter.

Yeah I agree. If the implication is that Calvin had sufficient intelligence to know that it needed to prevent Jordan from manipulating the controls, that would suggest it had developed the ability to understand human technology and possibly even spoken language. I think your 2nd theory is more likely. It was just responding to his movement and that action coincidently guarantee re-entry.

The film actually illustrates Calvin's behaviour very well. It showed that it was curious and indifferent to the humans until being shocked and it's further backed up with that scene with the rat. Calvin was curious and indifferent, touching and feeling what the rat is like then the rat bit him which made him consume it

What I got from the movie is that Calvin only killed people who harmed it. The first death occurred due to the scientist shocking Calvin, and Reynolds died due to panic just like everyone else. Jordan survived because throughout the movie he was the only one who did not harm Calvin.

this is acualy a good idea, but if you saw the movie Calvin did attack him but i didnt kill him. I believe he used him as a food source due to calvin needing to eat in order to grow. Calvin either A) went into some kind of hibernation & is using him as food or B) it was slowy feeding of him not knowing when he'll get more food but its really hard to say.. Like Hugh said in the movie "A cornered creature will do whatever it takes to ensure its survival"

Armoon26 I feel the same exact way. They make a point in the movie to say how we humans don't have a good track record when coming into contact with "others" as we end up destroying everything . I really liked this movie as it can be taken as kinda of a warning o man kind. If Calvin was more evolved at the point I think he would have understood that the rat was just going on instinct but at that point Calvin just sees something attacking him and does what needs to be done to survive. I think Calvin is slightly more "evolved" and realized Jordan is not a threat but still needs to survive and go into a hibernation type sleep. I mean honestly you shock an unknown life form and you don't think anything bad will happen? Ugh , humans

Why was it still on auto-pilot when we clearly see him take it off? He doesn't explain how and why Miranda was able to make the black box warning if she was freaking out flying off into deep-space. When did that scene take place? We see her computer course correct back to it's normal course, so how did she get thrown off? None of that makes sense, and I came here looking for answers to those questions, and didn't get them. All I got was a summary of the movie.. Which I just watched. Thanks bud.. Real big help.

@@Saimeren so apparently calvin is smart and knew the general way to use the computers. That or hes kinda like a symbiote where they absorb the information from the stuff it kills. Considering the order it kills the crew, its safe to say this is the case. The first one it kills is rory whose the stations mechanic and knows all the ins and outs of the place. How else would calvin know where to find the coolant? Then he starts absorbing hugh who would have the information regarding the bodies and how best to attack somebody to absorb them which he utilizes to kill the secondary crew. He then kills sho whose a pilot and a pilot would know how to use the autopilot system. Foundflix also pointed out how miranda went off course. The pods in the movie collide with each other. Miranda not being a pilot wouldnt know how to operate the system to readjust her course. She must have thought shed be safe and did the recording ahead of time. Theres no way theyd be able to recover her pod even if the earth survive

Really seems like Calvin first reacted aggressively, when being attacked himself. Like with the electricity rod and the rat (actually seemed to stroke the rat at first, as if enjoying the feeling of the fur) - it first attaced the rat, when bit. But, again, if it's carbon based it would need to feed at one point. So there's no way to know if treating if only kindly and nice would've ever been able to prevent any form of attack.

I loved how at the end, Calvin specifically lands in the Ocean.. think about it.. after Calvin eats the few Indigenous fishermen who discover the capsule, he slinks off into the ocean.. and eats EVERYTHING under water.. by the time he emerged from the Ocean to take on humanity, he'd likely be the size of a walking land mass, an island-sized Alien or bigger. I think the landing in the ocean was intentional, for that terrifying purpose. The Ocean would be the LAST place you'd want Calvin to get to, here on Earth, unlimited food supply, and convenient discretion in the eyes of Humanity. By the time he left the Ocean and turned to land, we would've stood absolutely no chance against him.

Lukas Rimkevicius i think he didn't eat him because: 1 Calvin didn't know where he was going and when it would have been able to eat again, so he conserved Jake Gyllenhaal as an emergency food source 2 he used Jake as a trap, leading other humans (the fishermen) to try and save him, breaking Calvin free. after all, every human Calvin encountered to that moment always tried to save other humans, so he jumped to the conclusion that could be the most probable way of escaping the pod once landed. This alien was so freaking smart that it's terrifying to think about it

Miranda might survive, her pod will definitely reenter the atmosphere in the near future. The ISS has thrusters primarily to keep it from falling back to earth. It has to boost its orbit roughly once a month because the very thin atmosphere at low earth orbit slows it down. The last view of the ISS we see as the two escape capsules leave shows the atmosphere is starting to become visible on the ISS. This indicates it is already at a dangerously low altitude. We can also see the trajectory of Miranda's capsule relative to Jordan's, she is A): traveling faster than him, this will raise her orbit on the opposite side of the planet but not raise it at her current location; (B): she is traveling upwards, this will raise her orbit one quarter of the way around earth, but equally lower it 3/4s of the way around the earth. Currently, the ISS uses a 3 man Soyuz escape pod, there is no one man "lifeboat". The Soyuz has 380m/s of delta-v, it uses half that getting to the ISS. You need roughly 3700 to escape the earth's gravity and 100 m/s to reenter earth's atmosphere. I also calculated that at the ISS's original orbit, she would reenter the atmosphere within 60 days from normal orbital decay. The Soyuz capsule has life support for a 3 man crew of 4 days, with just her this will last a minimum of two weeks. But like I said, based upon her trajectory, she will be striking the edge of the atmosphere every orbit at the location where the pod seperated, and this should bring her back to Earth in a period of several hours to several days.

The creature is clearly sentient, therefore it knew what it was doing, and it's clearly malevolent. How do you not see that? It's made quite obvious throughout the movie. On top of that, inside of the escape capsule, it clearly looked at the man once it had won in the face as though to say, you're dead. So, now I'll explain the reasons it was sentient: First with the hand, it was testing out what it can do to this creature and how it can defeat the creature and ultimately escape the enclosure. The creature literally reasons that it can make a hole in the glove with a sharp object. Did you just automatically know when you were a kid that breaking a stick might give you a sharp edge? Do you even remember the first time you learned that. It is something we don't even know, we learn. Without any foreknowledge that we know of, that creature reasoned that by breaking that probe, it could get a sharp edge. I'm sorry, but you have to be sentient to be able to reason something like that, and even being sentient isn't enough for us humans. Generally, we have actually have to witness it before knowing it. Then throughout the movie, you can clearly see Calvin is actually making decisions. It is not acting on instinct, because instinct is not rational, nor does it always favor survival. Instinct is fight or flight. Instinct is what animals do because they don't think, they don't reason. They just act according to their compulsion, and their compulsions help their survival, but only in a general sense. Instinct does not have the ability to think. It just acts, for better or for worse. For a mouse, running from hiding place to hiding place is what it is compelled to do, and under its circumstances, generally-speaking, helps its survival. Other animals survive better by being aggressive or running, it all just depends on what the current circumstances compel the animal to do. It's not reasoning that a bear decides to leave you alone if you play dead. It's because the bear is usually just coming by because its curious or you happen to get too close before the bear knows you're there and it's fight instinct kicks in to challenge the threat you, but it's typically every actively hunting you. A bear is compelled by instinct to be curious, and then compelled by instinct to become aggressive to you when its curiosity reveals that the threat you is too close. The bear can't reason that if he leaves, everything will be okay. If he runs, it's because he doesn't want to bother with you, and has nothing overriding compelling him to hold his ground. I know, it's hard to think of it in that way when you consider bees and other such marvels isn't it? Yeah, it's one of the reasons I realize God exists. Calvin, on the other hand, it is actively defying its own instincts for food and preservation in order to make a rational decision as to what its next move will be. It decides to jump back to the ship rather than getting at the food inside of the suit because it reasons that it's going to be floating out there unable to get back to the rest of the food if it keeps trying to find a way to eat the woman. Instinct wouldn't have told Calvin that. Instinct would have compelled Calvin to keep trying to eat her unless he was running out of air of course. So we can say that maybe, by chance, he was losing his breath by that time and remembers the station as being a place where he breathes, sort of like how animals instinctively hold their breath under water and instinctively are compelled to get out from the water in order to breath again. Oh yeah, and remember, how Calvin went right for the guy's mouth. Calvin saw the mouth and reasoned that it had something to do with keeping that creature alive. Then it figured out that the creature brings in air as it struggled to suck in air. So Calvin reasoned that by blocking his ability to breath, he would kill the creature. Of course, we could also think that maybe Calvin was instinctively attracted to something within the mouth, by chance, and it just so happens that he found the lungs and the vascular array of fresh blood in the blood vessels by exploring further. But since he went right for the mouth, to me that indicates and rational recognition that it was important to the creature for life, and then decided to exploit that opening in order to kill that creature, and only found out how to use the mouth to kill the creature once it was actually inside. The final clincher here is the escape capsule. The creature literally prevented the man from piloting the escape capsule away from earth, and was it actually aimed at earth after all of that crashing and banging and pushing that the station sustained? If not, then it means that the creature actually reasoned which way to pilot the capsule by how the man reacted when it resisted his intended direction. Calvin also had to be able to reason that the man had intentionally brought him into the capsule in order to trap him there and prevent him from reaching the planetary body below. This also proves that Calvin had to reason that there was more food where this food came from, and further reason that this food must have come from that big lit up thing that he saw through the windows and out in space. Now, we could reason that Calvin is simply instinctively attracted to planetary bodies in the same way flying insects are attracted to the light of the moon, but that would mean it would have to be able to survive floating out in space for eons till it accidentally fell to a world with food. I suppose we could say that is true and it's what wiped out the population of Mars. But then the creature would need some way of launching its single-celled babies into space in order to eventually land on other planets. Also, it wouldn't have known to resist the man, but rather it would have immediately killed him and consumed him for food. And that explains the final point. It didn't consume the man. It literally let him live because it needed to ensure it got back to earth and give reason to the food down there to reopen the capsule that it could escape. If the man were dead, they would not necessarily open the capsule, especially with how bloody that creature tends to be when eating people. They might be afraid, and the creature would end up getting captured. Oh, one thing I forgot in all of this. Calvin was able to reason that those creatures that had imprisoned him were actually sentient as well because Calvin recognized that they were making plans of their own, recognized that the man had intentionally trapped him in order to keep him from getting somewhere they didn't want him to get too. Calvin reasoned like a very high-IQ human being. Calvin's actions were not instinctive, but by decision. Calvin is a creature capable of higher thought, learning, and reasoning. He was clearly intelligent. clearly rational, and clearly malevolent. In fact, really the only thing Calvin has going for him as far as innocence is concerned is that he's largely ignorant, as far as we know. If a man from a tribe in the deep jungles were kidnapped today and brought into a glass enclosure and poked and prodded with probes, he may also act very much like Calvin absent any ability to communicate. In fact, we humans, the only thing we really have as far as communication with another human being absent speech is body-language and facial expression, and there are some pretty universal body-language facial expressions we humans instinctively use. It's what connects us when speech doesn't work. For a totally foreign intelligent species to come into contact with humans, there is no guarantee that there is anything at all universal that would be seen as communicative expressions. In other words, there would be no possible way to communicate in a situation like that if either the human or the alien felt immediately that their life was threatened by the other. Such a meeting may very well take place in much the same way Calvin reacted, including if the situation were reversed.

yeah, the thing is intentionally preventing the pilot to stir away. I've already guessed the ending during the collision with the debris. Still, that thing grabs on to the scientist leg is a little weird. While they were sealing off the ship, the scientist heard a noise and saw that thing but did nothing and his face looked guilty. So I thought he didn't want to kill that alien.....

SPOILER: I really liked this movie. Humans make mistakes and that's not a bad thing. Just like when they shocked Calvin, that is what made him so "deadly" cause if not Calvin would be a calm creature/alien, but how would have they have known? And both David and the other girl planned on David going into deep space with the alien so it couldn't reach earth and the girl safely back in earth. Apparently it all ended wrong with the opposite happening. The reason I liked this ending was because it's a movie, and not every movie or plan will always end the right way. But at least they tried.

+Kibido People don't understand how space works. The thrust used on Miranda's capsule is not enough to send her flying off into another galaxy. It probably just expanded the highest point of the orbit by a couple thousand of kilometers, but when she comes back down she will undoubtedly re-enter the atmosphere. After the ending of the movie she's most likely warning everyone on Earth to whoever rescued her from the pod that she needs to talk to a cop to redirect her to a NASA employee to warn everyone that the alien is on the planet and a nuclear weapon is needed. But they'll need to locate Jordan's pod first and hope that the Alien hasn't grown to the size of a building.

The explanation is that the writers couldn't think of a good ending. A much better ending would have been if a tiny version of Calvin had poked out of the scratch on Miranda's finger. There's no reason the thing wouldn't have shed cells all over the space station to infect the crew. There was no reason at all for it to stay as one organism.

A much better ending would have been for Calvin to float away into deep space. And have Miranda's ultimate FIREWALL breached through the cut on her finger. In order to tie that close up of her blood to the rest of the movie. Because as it stands, it seemed kind of random. As they said, Calvin had plant like properties in the beginning. Maybe, it could have put out spores in a way to reproduce. Some of them could have infected her and laid dormant inside her. That way we lose all the characters in the movie, including Calvin, because they are all irrelevant to the movie's real protagonist, LIFE; and it's everlasting pursuit for survival. This would have tied everything better together at the end, and still given the audience that uncomfortable feeling of despair and helplessness they aimed for, but in a much more poetic way, that gave the title of the movie a lot more meaning. Wouldn't it have been ironic for the one person of the crew, most concerned with firewalls, to be the one who unknowingly doomed mankind by not tending to an insignificant deficiency in her very much aLIVE, firewall. Yes, aLIVE is another tie-in to the word LIFE. ... Or really, anything would have been better than the switcharoo they pulled on us at the end.
