If the parents were actually just trying to keep their spider daughter from escaping, then what was with the girl who was killed and buried in the pumpkin patch? Did the parents really kill her or did Sarah try to escape at one point and kill her while doing so? It feels like the writers forgot about that plot point as the twist was revealed.

In the perfect ending, she is weak and malnourished when she is let out, but still scary looking and evil. She still kills all the same people, but in creative ways that don’t require supernatural strength. For me, this film was great, but the ending introduced an unforgivable plot hole (she could’ve broken through the dry wall at anytime) that only exists because she is so freakishly strong.

Seems to me all genres are having the same script problem the last few years. They try throwing in a twist but don't ensure that it actually fits with the world they've created, the characters they've established, or the tone of the movie up to that point. It's frustrating. Some movies are like watching two or three separate movies in one because of twists that don't gel.

Just have one of the parents be cursed to have weird spider monster children. The young girl who went missing could have been Sarah's normal looking twin or one of their attempts at a normal child. Then having the monster side developed around Halloween and leading to the parents kll her. This also adds to why they watch Peter so closely especially towards Halloween while masking it as oh this couple is just overly protective because of assumed fertility issues. Peter pushing the kid down the stairs is like small sign to them that he'll turn. Let Sarah have anger towards the parents but some care for Peter since despite it all he is like her. Leave it ambiguous of whether or not Peter truly is gonna develop into the same kind of monster as Sarah. The teacher could serve the same purpose until the end. Either her or someone else gaining custody of Peter after the bloodshed. The chaos being heavily pinned on the parents. Then end the movie on a knocking coming from the walls or Peter's closet letting is staying close with Sarah even if he's hiding her in a new house. Or have Peter and Sarah hold the teacher hostage as their new mom

I actually think the story may make more sense than we give it credit. It's about a legacy of violence and if we can escape the cycle. His parents are clearly deranged, given the treatment of their children and what, possible, is their work in the pumpkin patch. We have then the sister who is 'clearly' a monster when the parents are monsters just in their nature. Meaning, it is evolving in a way. Now we have the boy, who seems normal but had very little to no hesitation in killing his parents and in pushing a bully down the steps, not caring if the kid died or was just injured. The sister saying 'You cannot escape' and the flash at the end of him being in the room and her behind him shows that he can physically move on but, mentally, he is still trapped with the family/with the shadow of the monster hanging over him. It just goes to show you that if you escape abuse and you learned that violence is a way of life, it isn't so easy just to 'escape' and be normal. The threat of being the monster next is within you.
@kizu6669
@kizu6669 9 ай бұрын
I also think that the monsters were in Peters head. If you pay attention to how everything looks, it all changes from scene to scene and I can't imagine this was on accident. The bear for example, it is shown with weird human teeth, but in the last scene where Peter is in the hole, het picks it up and it is a normal bear. The Sarah thing also changes in size and her face is rather kids horror. This was on purpose I think, as the other horror in the movie was actually scary (which I think is why it was put into the movie), like the dream sequence. Even the hole seems to be a rather 'normal' size when Peter is first thrown in the cellar, but at the end it is super deep. It seems they were showing us flashes of the actual world and then the reality Peter sees. Sarah being his sister is also something that she says, so it isn't really known if this is actually the case. The movie makes sense if seen from that perspective, until the teacher also fights the Sarah creature... That cannot be really explained..

When I saw the third act of this film, I thought immediately: people either going to love this or goint to dislike this. Because, it was a rather radical shift in tone to say the least. But not really gripped out of thin air. This will probably one of these films that, once it hit streaming or physical will have to be subjected to a few rewatches. The film might not spell everything out, word for word but in hindsight, there were a few hints to how this all would pan out and what most likely was going on all along. How I interpret the events of the film (and I do like it when a film leaves room for interpretation): Mark & Carol from the beginning weren't the most stable people to have children. He was rather strict with a clear view of what he wanted his children to be, she had neurotic tendencies that flair up when things didn't go as she hoped. Not really the best start for a family but things got worse when their daughter was born. A monster, both physically as psychologically, Mark considered of killing the child, for the sake of all but the mother didn't want it. She wanted to be a good mother but not only where they well underequiped to deal with her, Sarah also proved to be very dangerous. Their first solution, to keep Sarah's violent nature in check, was to remodel the basement, to keep her locked up in there. At first, just in the basement but when she turned out to be even more violent than they could have foreseen, they created the pit. Until one Halloween eve, she escaped even that. This escape ended with the death of the little girl, coming trick or treating. They covered up the death, they buried the body in the pumpkin patch and they made new arrangements for their daughter, locking her in the walls. Only that was, she would have been safe from the authorities and everyone else from her. With their son, it seemed like a blessing. He was okay, he was normal and all was fine. Until he started to behave weirdly. Until he started to hear his sister. His parents didn't want him to discover her, they didn't want him to know the truth. But when he too started to act violently, they feared that he was becoming like his sister. So, they locked him up in the basement, as this might cool him down AND prevent his sister from contacting him. Meanwhile Mark probably tried to convince Sarah to stop talking to her brother, getting a gash on his arm for his trouble and also trying to prevent outsiders from discovering the truth about Sarah. That's why they also tried to prevent him contacting the outside world. If anyone discovered Sarah, they might take her away or worse, allowing her to escape again. Mark & Carol were way over their head, caught in a "cobweb" and the more they struggled, the more they got stuck. With every move they made to solve their problem, they made it worse: resulting in their deaths through poisoning and Sarah (the spider in this story), wiggling free. Or at least, that's how I think everything has to be taken. Does the film explicitely say all this? No, but does a film have to hold our hand or can we, by giving it some time and some thinking, make up our own mind about what did expire in the span of 1h30 (If they wanted to explain everything, they likely had to add another 30 minutes and there are enough horror films with a 2 hour time span, let's leave it). Now, do you have to like the film for this? No, you don't, I liked it though I had to give it some time to put all things in order. But saying it all comes out of nowhere... It might feel like that at times because your mind was going into a different direction (I had that that feeling in the first few minutes but by mulling it over, more and more of it clicked) but actually, the ending does actually fit the story decently enough, if you are willing to use the clues and fill in the details yourself a bit.

Also there is the question of what's older - chicken or the egg? Did the parents locked Sarah up simply because she was deformed and then she got rageful and vengeful? Or they didn't lock her up for her looks, but only after she turned up to be a deranged killer (halloween girl)?

I like how from the outside looks like a smallish farm house, but the inside is HUGE. Also from the inside there is a large space above the front door with a window, but outside, no such space and no window just above the door. Also this isn't counting the extra space that monster's lair was taking up in which you do get to see some of it near the end after the teacher busted open the wall.

The word for the place where Sarah was being held captive is an 'Oobliette' , I think it's French for: a pit with slanted walls inside of a dungeon. The side walls are about 10 to 15 feet tall and about 10 foot in diameter like a cylinder and on top of that are slanted walls that taper up until it makes a 3 to 4 foot opening capped off with an iron grate and padlock. The only key is held by the king ( or prince or whoever?) The Oobliette gives the feeling that there is no escape. The walls can't be scaled and there isn't anything to grab onto. The prisoner is dropped in naked and usually unconscious. And the pit is never cleaned out so previous prisoners are still in there and the rats and the excrement and rot etc. It was a terrible way to die..... or so I've been told?

I have a theory that could cover the plot hole of *beware spoilers ahead* how she was so strong to climb walls and kill people but could not break through the dry wall and why go all the way to convince peter to kill their parents. deep inside she still loved her parents and since they decided to lock her up as punishment and ordered her to stay there she still obeyed them, still wanting to break free she then decided to convince peter to kill them because she couldn't do it herself, deep inside she loved them and knew she couldn't hurt them..and that's also why she couldn't kill peter, even tho she envied him living normal life..at the end she couldn't just kill him and wanted to lock him up so he would feel what she felt all these years.

I do think that some minor explanation for why she was born a monster would have been nice, but it feels like for this particular movie you make a way too big of a deal out of the fact that it was a monster, Where a much more reasonable point than "Oh no, random monster in a horror movie" would be: "And how the heck didn't she break out before if she can, well, do all of that?" cause if I remember correctly, those walls did not get reinforced. so the moment she was in the crawl spaces, that should have been it. It couldhave been neatly tied together if the entire house had odd, subtle reinforcements. The door being surprisingly heavy. All stuff on the wall attached with magnets or sticky stuff, cause the walls are too hard to nail stuff. The windows being small, reinforced and not able to open. That kinda story telling stuff could have worked very well. An explicit explanation for something unnatural isn't needed, if it is framed right. If you build your premise on an initial assumption of "There be monsters" you don't need to explain them per se. After all, there was never an explanation for why there is magic in harry potter, why there are gods in percy jackson or the fact that pennywise and the space turtle exist in It. They were just the premise. So ranting about there being an inexplicable monster feels kinda weird in the horror genre, when a poorly executed monster is a way bigger problem to begin with.

I honestly didn't mind the twist, even her being a supernatural monster isn't inherently a problem, although it could have used a better set up. My problem was the inconsistencies. So this monster girl is strong enough to rip people's heads off or rip them straight in two, but not strong enough to tear down the thin wall that was later torn down by a simple fire poker in less then a minute? Or a metal grate held by a flimsy rusty latch? Or what about how she got overpowered by a small boy tugging at her hair? Also, the ending was moronic. Are they implying that the boy was going to go back to bed in that murder house like everything was normal? Cops wouldn't get involved and the monster wouldn't be killed or at least locked up? What exactly was that "creepy monologue" at the end? I'm guessing it was for the audience...
@vanessapalikarska3877
@vanessapalikarska3877 10 ай бұрын
The final scene shows a different room, implying Peter is rescued and living with a foster family perhaps. The monologue essentially means “I will always be a part a of you” as in he has killed, he has to live with that AND with the horror of his sister. Kinda like PTSD. Doesn’t necessarily mean she will escape and not be killed but rather that even in her death this trauma will haunt him forever.

Watching the movie I'll say he's going way harder on it that he should. They explain she was born with defects and was born abnormal. Now they didn't explain why the 11 yr old was killed but I'm sure she killed that girl and they were forced to lock the monster away. You can see the mom still feeds her as she leaves the clock in the movie. So it'd explain how she's not feeble and the like. My biggest thing was with Anthony Star as the dad I already suspected the parents were sinister, but it follows alot of tropes in movies

I was really just so confused by why they failed so hard on the story. If the parents are desperate not to have Sarah get out, if they don't want their children to ever meet, why did they just gaslight him that she wasn't there? Why weren't they like OH SH!T OUR DEMON KID IS TALKING TO OUR NON DEM0N KID GOTTA STOP THAT! The parents actions make ZERO sense. If you KNOW there's something in the house he could be talking to, DO something about it, don't just tell him it's not there so that said voice can tell him to poison his parents?

They were horrified when they had the daughter... and Then The missing little girl saw the spider daughter during halloween and she killed her, so the parents got rid of the body, and then locked away the daughter... So the parents were already half crazy from having to raise the spider girl, so when they had a normal baby boy, they did everything in their power to try and raise him normally, but they were already fucked in the head from having to raise the monster... So they tried to keep it a dirty little secret... And they KNEW exactly what the boy was hearing through the walls, it was just them going through denial and trying to delay the inevitable by not telling peter about his sister... that was their downfall 🤷🏽‍♂

I think this was actually in his head. The 'scary' stuff keeps changing, like even the stuffed bear with teeth and then being a normal bear. The length of the monster's hair changes and even it's face is more like a child's nightmare. The ages of Peter and Sarah don't make sense, as does her changing size. It would look like the girl that disappeared was kept in the cellar and died. In the meantime the parents had their own kid. The only reason why we think Sarah is Peter's sister, is because it said so. So either, Peter is being abused and has some weird coping mechanism and delusions (does not explain the teacher seeing it though). Or it's like a specter that manifested and is an actual ghost.

I think it's just a story of abuse and a kid snapping and killing his parents and they just did a poor metaphor of "the spider girl made me do it", but technically the parents did that to her, so it all comes back to them "abusing" their child There are only so many ideas and ways to go about the same metaphors of child abuse, emotional drama, drug abuse, PTSD, etc. and trying to put a spin on it. Subverting expectations and plot twists arent for everyone, and we will eventually completely run out of ideas with the amount of movies coming out each year. That's why remakes, sequels, requels are so hot recently. I mean, look at Halloween and Friday the 13th, only sometimes with a different setting and characters. Beloved movies for some reason, even though its the exact same shit time and time again. Why would they try when people eat up whatever slop they feed us?

Also the teacher went to the house because he suspected some kind of abuse based on the kid having bruises and cuts. He always drew his stepdad as a monster because that's what he really was inside. He drew him,folded the paper, balled it up and finally burned it to save his mom and teacher.

Ok your voice is so fun and nostalgic and reminds me of childhood. You make horror movies fun.

I miss your director's chair. Feels more like home with the old set up. Thanks for still turning the vids out tho.

While I haven’t seen the movie, the twist really doesn’t sound that bad. I think they were going for an “abused becomes the abuser” angle. Maybe it needed more foreshadowing or just a bit more polish in general, but I do think this kind of twist can work.

Yeah it needed more foreshadowing and a detailed backstory cause it felt like they threw some plot points in there

The movie had really good tension and intrigue up until the kid opens the door and then the entire thing just falls apart. Just like Barbarian.

In my opinion, the last 2 minutes of the movie, when sarah tells peter that he will keep seeing her, and the movie ending start with a song ''AM I LIVING IN A DREAM?'', tells that this whole story was in Peter's imagination. Maybe I am wrong :D

They talk about his imagination a few times in the movie. It just seems like a cop out me

If this movie goes The Boy then I'm passing on it. A lame twist handled badly is just not my thing.

This is just how this studio handles their style of horror, when i saw it was the same behind Barbarian i already realized it was gonna follow the same beats of setting up a “predictable” horror movie with a plot twist that comes extremely out of left field. I think people should just turn their brains off when it comes to this studio making their horror films because their style isnt to make a story that makes sense. Its to make a horror movie with just that, pure horror with shock and nothing else

@@deaditeera It's a very famous 1957 rock n' roll song from Little Richard. With some lyrical tweaks from the OP.
