Jordan has more control over her vocal cords than any other singer on the planet. She changes her tone, fry and rasp depending on the song. She’s been training her voice 4-6 hours a day every day, 52 weeks a year since she was 3 years old. As a contrast to this song, check out Unchained Melody from the Nobel Peace Prize Awards this past December and react to that performance, it was her “normal” voice. Jordan is a jazz singer and performs a song differently every time she sings it, which baffles most people!

I agree with your sentiment, and share your enthusiasm for any AJ performance, but, how do you know such information....4-6 hrs a day basically every day since 3 years old. Is this first hand information? Or more like a hyperbolic statement to exaggerate a point. No disrespect meant.

Likely more than any other vocalist in history! and, Yes, there is video of her at 1 1/2in her crib , holding a toy mike, and singing Whitney Houston!!! She and her family have stated many times that she began practicing 4-6 hours a day at 3, And she has never been pushed to sing; it has always been her pushing herself. She has stated many times that singing is her life and that it is like talking to her! She is self taught, but she did have voice instruction to protect her voice when she was 4-6 years old! All the rasp in this song is 100% her style and input for this song and arrangement! As others have said, listen to her rendition of Unchained MeIody at the Nobel Peace Price last December! No rasp! I will say that I have been a little concerned about her physical well being lately because she has been doing a LOT of traveling to different countries, performing, and working with Toby Gad on new songs! But I doubt she has been actually singing any more than what has been normal for her for 15 years!

The Norwegian singer, Angelina Jordan is a young legend. now living in LA, Angelina Jordan (curent 18 Yeats old ). She is an elegant artist for the big occasions. Which artist has sung for the Nobel Peace Prize twice, and she sings FIFA's official song before the upcoming World Cup. She has sung for 40,000 in concert with Nora Jones. She has helped to collect 21 million for children in need. Performed for many countries' heads of state on many big occasions. Concert in Las Vegas, with a number of other live concerts. Signed record deal with "Republic Records" at only 14 years old. The list is almost endless ... She is so talented that no one can ignore her, and together with Rebpublic Records, she actually sets the pace herself to total worldfame . Although she herself is an 18-year-old young lady, her taste in music is quality, and not just high bass in the stomach. When the next James Bond film is to be made, who do you think is in the spotlight for a possible theme song? The list of what Angelina has already been involved in is already so extensive that only a deep dive into her performances has to be searched online by yourself. It is too extreme to almost believe! All important people in the music industry know who she is and what she is good at on big occasions. I don't think anyone has the guts to suggest to her a fast track that doesn't suit her. Her integrity is too strong for that! - The remaining members of Queen allowed her to copyright her arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody! (Translated by Google)

From a young age, she has captivated audiences with her soulful performances and mature musical understanding. Her ability to connect with listeners and deliver performances with emotional depth is unparalleled. As she continues to grow as an artist, her influence extends beyond the charts, inspiring a new generation of musicians and music lovers alike. With each performance, she reaffirms her status as a prodigious talent in the world of music. AJ' s ability to imbue each song with deep emotion and her own distinctive style makes her a sought-after artist for songwriters and composers. Having a song performed by her can be seen as a mark of prestige, potentially elevating the song's reach and impact. It's a testament to her talent that songwriters might feel that having her interpret their work would bring a new level of recognition and appreciation to their music. Beyonce' version of "If I Were A Boy" was good, but AJ's version gives one chills and causes us to cry, not sad tears but happy emotional tears of joy. This is no longer a Beyonce song; it now belongs to AJ who can take any song and give it meaning.

Angelina has had a deep alto since she was very little as discovered by her vocal coaches. Her unique style comes from the fact she fell in love with jazz as a child and become known as a child prodigy. There is even a video of her singing at the age of 18 months. Her early influences are Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Etta James, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, Elvis Presley, and Adele, to name a few. The rasp and breathiness has been there since she was 7, when she entered Norway's Got Talent and won the competition at age 8. She's been influenced by Jazz, R&B, Soul, and Retro Pop. I think that when you start to listen to more of her music, some of your observations will probably change. She has earned as one of her nicknames The Girl With A Thousand Voices. Also, she rarely goes that high in her vocals when you see more of her. It actually surprises her fans when she does go high. Her fans call her The Barefoot Princess. She always performs with no shoes when she sings. Why? The reason is very special. When she was 6 years old, she was traveling with her family in Iran where she met a poor shoeless girl in the streets that was about her age. She made money by weighing people. After speaking with her for a few minutes, Angelina noticed the scars on the girl's feet and asked the girl what her dream is. The girl said she wanted to be a doctor but she couldn't because she had to make money for her family. Angelina did what came natural to her, she gave the little girl her shoes and told her to not give up on her dreams. The girl then asked Angelina what her dreams were, Angelina answered that she wanted to sing for the whole world, and the girl said she would pray for her success. Since then, Angelina has performed barefoot in honor of that little girl and to those who are less fortunate around the world. She keeps this promise to this day. One of the reasons why we love her so much!

Great reaction, and very valid points, Freya. However, what you describe doesn't really fit with Angelina. I have been following her since she was 7, and she has SO many different voices and techniques it's just crazy. She can sing the smoothest you will ever hear, she can sound like she's been drinking whiskey and smoking cigarettes since she was born, and she can sing ANY genre she wants, while still blowing it out of the park. These are things you will only really understand by listening to a wide portion of her performances. That being said though, her raspiness is one of her more identifiable trademarks. But make no mistake about it, it is there because she wants it to be there, and WHEN she wants it to be there. Also what you said about her breathy onsets is one of her trademarks (along with a dozen more I might add). But she does it with ABSOLUTE intention. Again, this is something you will only understand by listening a LOT to her. And of course, all of her fans have 😉 Hence why I guess you will have a rather unison herd commenting on your reaction. I haven't read them though, but I have a very strong feeling that I am right. On your own time, maybe listen to her performance of My Funny Valentine when she was 16, or maybe her interpretation of Suspicious Minds, made popular by Elvis, also when she was 16. Those are but a very few that may sway your opinion 🙂 Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥

Freya, thank you so very much for your analysis and concerns. Angelina is 18 years old and celebrating 10 years as a on-stage performer. She has said, singing is like breathing for her. Angelina has rarely belted during those 10 years. She is a storyteller with a natural deep raspy voice. *Why Angelina always performs barefoot* At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina never learned the orphan's name but called her Princess. The orphan girl replied, "princesses live in castles, we live in ruins". Angelina titled her song about this story, "Princess of Ruins". Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. PLEASE PURCHASE Angelina’s book from her merchandise store on her official website.

I respect your commentary, but what you need to understand that Angelina has been singing like this for over 10 years. She has complete control over every sound that comes out of her mouth. If there is fry or raspiness in a phrase it is because she put it there deliberately. If there is extra air, breath, or release in a phrase it is because she thought it was necessary to convey the emotion of the story. She has been using these same techniques since the age of 7 on professional stages around the world. In future reactions you would do well to approach your analysis from the perspective that she is a highly trained and intuitive vocalist/artist who has recorded and posted over 200 covers and performed in venues from intimate clubs to audiences of over 40,000. She recently performed 2 sold out, 2-hour concerts back to back on the same night at the westgate hotel, international theater in Las vegas where Elvis held residence.

Voice instructors Mistakes: Evaluating a singer's vocal health from a single performance can be challenging and may not provide a complete picture of their vocal condition. Angelina Jordan, known for her distinctive jazz-influenced style, has been captivating audiences since a young age with her mature voice and control. It's important to consider a singer's entire history and technique when discussing vocal health. Professional voice instructors often emphasize the importance of proper technique and care to prevent strain or injury. Jordan's consistent performances since childhood suggest a level of proficiency and understanding of vocal care, which is crucial for longevity in a singing career. Vocal health is a complex subject, and assessments should be made with a comprehensive understanding of the individual's vocal use and history.

Regarding singing barefoot, there is a story behind that. It has nothing to do with being grounded or to feel the music. When she was 6 she and her family were in the Middle East (most assume Iran because that’s where her grandmother is from). They came across a girl, about Angelina’s age or a little older, on the street who was weighing people on a bathroom scale for money. Angelina began talking to the girl. Many assume they spoke in Farsi as this is a language Angelina learned growing up. She found out that the girl was homeless and weighing people on the streets was how she made money. Angelina asked her what she wanted to be. The girl told her that she wanted to be a doctor but knew that could never happen. Angelina told her to never give up. Angelina said that she wanted to be a superstar and sing for the world. The girl told Angelina that she would pray for her. Angelina saw that the girl wasn’t wearing shoes and her feet were scarred. She gave the girl her shoes. Shortly after she vowed to not wear shoes when she performs on stage as a reminder of the less fortunate in the world. At age 9 she wrote a book about the encounter and became the youngest published author in Norway. In February at her Las Vegas concert she debuted a new song that she wrote about the encounter. The song is called Princess of Ruins

Developing undeniable presence, Angelina Jordan immediately felt at home on stage, performing everywhere from the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony and Brilliant Minds in Stockholm to Muse In City Festival in Seoul with a crowd of 40k, and she opened the show for Quincy Jones’ 85th birthday at the O2 Arena in London, and got a standing ovation. During 2020, Republic Records Co-Founder and C.E.O. Monte Lipman personally signed her to the label. Spotlighting her songwriting, she made her formal debut with “Million Miles” produced by GRAMMY Award-winning duo Stargate [Beyoncé, Sam Smith, Rihanna]. American Songwriter fittingly described it as “a momentous occasion” as it gathered over 5 million total streams in a few months’ time. In addition to garnering widespread acclaim from Time, Variety, CNN, BBC, and more, People has hailed her “powerful vocals.” To date, she has amassed north of half-a-billion KZbin views and nearly 2 billion Facebook views. However, she fully defines the scope of her artistry in 2021 with the release of new music via Republic Records.

I see you're getting a lot of pushback from devoted fans here, who I think partially misunderstands what you've observed. I tend to agree with you on this particular song. When I first heard it, I thought it sounded like she either was recovering from a cold or had temporarily overstrained her voice. However, if you listen to the other music-video-version that must have been recorded around the same time, her vocals sounds crisp and clear, and all signs of strain and vocal stress are absent. She also regularly publish TikTok's where her voice sounds crisp and unstrained, so I’m not worried. And to those who suggest I should listen to this or that song of hers, I have listened to them all several times. I’m Norwegian and have been entranced with her since I heard her first song on «Norske talenter» when it ran in 2014. After that, I’ve been following her every move and song up until now. There are great singers, exeptional singers, and once in a generation singers like Angelina. To me, Angelina is the most exeptional female vocalist I’ve heard in my life (and I’m north of 60). This is due to a number of factors. The most prominent is that she has an exeptionally beautiful voice. The color and timbre of her voice is unique, beautiful and unlike anything I’ve heard. The second is her inate musicality. She instinctively knows how to phrase melodic lines, how to utilize fluid dynamics, intonations and improvisations in just the right places to convey emotions and lift a song to new hights. That’s how she can completely transform songs she covers, and give them completely new life and meaning. She really is a true story teller, like a veteran musician said about her during a pause in her Christmas show a few years ago - which was the highest accolade he could give. I completely agree with him.

For anybody new to Angelina, who wants to get to know her quickly, I created this playlist with 12 songs from age 7 to 18 (plus a trailer for a documentary describing her career up to 2023): kzbin.info/aero/PLddfS789jBCrSUcMxwCiHeJi8A9zN5xt3 1. Gloomy Sunday, her 2013 audition to Norway's Got Talent, when she was 7, which was aired in 2014 and then immediatly went viral. 2. Fly Me to the Moon, live on The View, was her US debut later in 2014, and also went viral. It gathered more than 37 Million views on KZbin, and many more on Facebook. 3. I Put a Spell On You, the song where Screamin' Jay Hawkins got his nickname from, has 11 Million Views so far. Her cover is closer to his original than most well known covers of it. She was 9 years old here. 4. Feeling Good, in a version sung on TV in 2016 while still being 10 years old, though she already started to perform the song in public about a year earlier. 5. A Million Years Ago, one of 13 Adele covers she did, as an impressive acoustic home studio recording. 6. Shield, from 2018, was the third original she relased that year at 12 years old. It is about the protection and support she gets from her family. 7. Bohemian Rhapsody, in her own stripped down arrangement on AGT the Champions Season 2, wowed everyone, including the group Queen themselves, who twittered "Wow, what a performance of Bohemian Rhapsody!" 8. Million Miles, which she wrote and produced together with Stargate, is about the loss of a close person (her grandfather), and was the first song she released 2020 with Republic Records. 9. 7th Heaven, her 2nd song with RR from 2021, is encouraging people to persue their dreams, like she did. 10. Suspicious Minds, done 2022, is an Elvis cover as unique as Bohemian Rhapsody was. 11. Love Don't Let Me Go, her third release with Republic Records, and the first new song on her 2023 released EP "Old Enough" of total 6 new original songs. 12. Bad Valentine, her latest, yet unreleased original, as a live preview in a small venue. If you are more interested in her recent performances, here is a playlist containing releases and performances from her last 3 years, including all titels from "Old Enough": kzbin.info/aero/PLddfS789jBCqMgW5xQeK97nibjJCeDme5 She cites Billie Holiday as her biggest influence. And she covered more songs from Adele than by any other artist, followed by Amy Winehouse, Elvis, and Sam Smith.

If you're saying Angelina has "oversung" her voice, and that she now has a necessarily raspy voice and must use a "pushed" onset, you haven't heard enough of her work. I suspect working on these aspects of a singer's voice may be your specialty as a coach, but I respectfully submit that Angelina purposely made these stylistic choices here. That is, these are not artifacts of oversinging; they've been part of Angelina's vocal palette for more than 10 years. For a "clean" example of her work (breathy and delicate, not raspy, and with no vocal fry), listen to her performance of "Unchained Melody" at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqnHpnqJn6Z9edEsi=InR28KGrz4aAvJ-Y

I know nothing about those things. It sounds interesting and I know she has been singing a lot. I gotta believe Republic Records will have the best vocal coaches and experts available for Angelina. Even though she may not have used them a lot in the past because she is mostly self taught. From what I understand Angelina is Republics number one priority. I understand they built a brand new studio just for Angelina. I'm sure it will be available for others, but Angelina should have priority. I'm going to trust her team who have been with her from the start. There have been many of similar concerns expressed earlier in her career. They weren't sure she would be able to handle the voice change that happens during her development. I believe, hope and pray that is the case. I just know she has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard and I hope her team is going to manage those concerns with Angelina's best interests in mind. Thank you for your wonderful analysis. I love her voice and what she can do with it. Thank you. 😊♥👣

I have heard her turn the rasp on and off since she was pretty small and she still seems to be able to sing without it if she chooses. The purity of her high notes in her recent Unchained Melody performance didn't seem to challenge her.

Two suggestions: listen to her cover of Unchained Melody from the Nobel Peace Prize (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqnHpnqJn6Z9edE). She chose to do that almost without any vocal fry and she ends with some clean head voice notes. But also listen to her original Now I'm The Fool (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnO7dImPlJKFo7c). It is a treat I think no music lover should miss. It is a jazzy piece with lots of feelings, and I think you will enjoy it even though there are vocal fry on parts of it.

Angelina creates emotinal sound, chosen to every song. therefor she is so popular to react to because she conecy the feelings to word and sound. and i think many vocal coaches over thinking tecnic in front of se what shes doing to conect feeling to words.

Angelina's raspyness and vocal fry is an artistic choice. The breathy beginnings and endings of her phrases are also an artistic choice of expression for this particular song, not a necessity from a damaged voice. Angelina is heavily influenced with a background in the old classic jazz greats and has studio experience from the age of 6. Angelina is not a classical or pop singer always performing with clear supported tones. Jazz is her influence. Angelina may not be your cup of tea, used to advertise your singing classes with.

Referring to 4:39, it would be practically a sin, IMO, if someone were to tell Angelina to remove raspiness and breathiness from all of her songs. They are just two of the many tools that she uses to convey the emotion of the lyrics. She selects them and controls them like the master artist that she is.

Many vocal coaches, several who specialize in the physiology oy the voice, have commented on how Angelina's versatility in singing different styles, ranges & intensities, is healthy. The features of her voice you concentrate on are not something she uses all the time. This song lent itself to those effects and she always utilizes only the tools she feels are appropriate to the message.

I just have to laugh at the assumption's you are making about AJ voice without experiencing more of her ART. This is Angelina Jordan the most extraordinary storyteller in my lifetime. Unchained Melody Nobel Peace Prize Dec. 2023 Unchained Melody (AJ, at the age of 17 performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony December 2023 in Oslo, Norway) I watched as Angelina Jordan stepped onto the stage, her presence commanding attention. The room hushed, anticipation hanging in the air like a delicate thread. She stood there, a young girl with an old soul, ready to weave magic with her voice. As the first notes of "Unchained Melody" filled the room, time seemed to slow. Angelina's voice wrapped around each word, infusing them with a depth that transcended mere lyrics. It was as though the song had been written for her, and her alone. The audience held its breath as she sang. Her voice soared, reaching heights that touched the heavens. The pain and longing in her eyes mirrored the emotions in the song-the heartache, the yearning. It was more than a performance; it was a revelation. The chorus came, and Angelina's voice swelled, filling every corner of the room. " Oh, my love, my darling I've hungered, hungered for your touch," she sang, and suddenly, we all felt the real meaning of the words. The magic in her performance was like nothing we had ever experienced in our lives. The lyrics came alive and had meaning as they flowed through us. In that moment, Angelina Jordan became a vessel for something greater-an embodiment of love itself. Her voice carried us beyond our own pain and loneliness. We felt connected-to her, to each other, to something intangible yet profound. As she held that final note, time snapped back into place. The applause erupted-a thunderous acknowledgment of what we had just witnessed. But it wasn't just applause; it was gratitude-for allowing us to glimpse love and longing through Angelina's eyes. And so, we stood there, hearts full, tears in our eyes. Angelina Jordan had given us something rare-a reminder that love exists even in our brokenness. And for those few minutes, we believed it with every fiber of our being.

Does seem quite of bit of concern for an obvious artistic choice by someone notorious for her jazz background. I do realize vocal damage can be a real concern -- I remember once searching whatever happened to Allanah Myles after the wonderfully sultry Black Velvet, and was aghast at what was left of her voice 10-15 years of whisky and cigarettes later. But to mistake this performance for signs of damage...Angelina's a very prominent artist -- its not like there aren't literally hundreds of other videos of her singing out there, and the rasp, the fry, the playing with vowels, shortening or lengthening them, all that stuff are clearly choices depending on the intimacy of the song. Her use of the full tool bag has actually been a defining characteristic since the very beginning. One of the videos that got her famous was 9yr old Angelina deciding that the only way to get at the core emotion of I Put A Spell On You was to ignore the silly Hocus Pocus version and get back to Screamin J. Hawkins, so she sang it like a desperate 45yr old chainsmoking bar singer. There are multiple videos of her taking on Adele songs in recent years, and rather than rasp, what she has done with All I Ask, Easy on Me etc. is throw in whisper notes and intimate airy vocals to get at the emotion that Adele belts through. There is her famous reimagining of Bohemian Rhapsody. Clean notes are a nice technical achievement, but they aren't always the best conveyers of emotion. Part of Angelina's art has always been going for that emotional core using an overflowing bag of vocal tricks. If you actually had a concern about her ability to sing straight notes, just check out her cover of Whitney's "I Have Nothing" last year. Not an easy song to hide a damaged voice, and she just stood up to the mike and just belted right through it.

Please do some more reactions to Angelina singing and see if you still would make the same analysis of her possible voice strain. I believe it is her stylistic choice and not a have to condition. Yes, she does sing a lot and every day, I'm sure, but I don't think she is causing damage. You watch her neck and her jaw when she sings, and you can't see any tension there. If she were having the problems you spoke of, I believe we could see the tension in the throat and face.

I'm always interested in reaction videos from real vocal coaches because they usually offer more value and insight than comments from random viewers. But in this case I have the strong impression that you have heard far too few of Angelina Jordan's songs and have far too little insight into her entire career to be able to make a critical judgment. But I still see that as a forgivable sin. The lurid thumbnail, on the other hand, crosses the line of decency. In the end, I would like to ask you to take a closer look at the person and work of Angelina Jordan and provide more, but more balanced, reaction videos in the future.

I really enjoyed your reaction and insights! I love when you said something to the effect of "Just because you can sing that way doesn't me you should all the time, or often" when talking about oversinging. And you are right! And I'm pretty sure Angelina is well aware of this. Two things come to mind: 1. Some vocal coach reactors said similar things after they saw her rendition of "I Put a Spell on You". She has actually never repeated singing that song in that same style (with all the growls, screams, etc...). If you check out her performances of this song a year or two later you'll see she sings it with a clear voice and avoids the growls and screams. 2. When she played with Gregg Field (former drummer for Sinatra, among many others), Field told her how great her storytelling is and told her the famous Sinatra quote "I never let my singing get in the way of my storytelling". If you look at al her performances over the years you can tell she abides by this "creed". I've seen so many reactors say "I wish she would belt more or do this or that more, I know she can". But she doesn't. She knows not to oversing. She knows it would take away from the story she is telling. For me, she's a storyteller first and a singer second. It just so happens she has an incredible voice to tell those stories!!!

I think that Angelina has protected her vocals very well. Yes there are a few songs where is is "belting like crazy", but most songs she is very moderate in that matter and I think that is just to prevent the problems you are mentioning. Angelina is making all her songs so interesting partly because she is such an amazing storyteller and the other part is, as you say, her unique sound. A couple of days ago a new song has been released on KZbin (not an official music video, but the quality is very good): "A bad Valentine". It's a brand new song, written and composed by Toby Gad and Angelina Jordan. And that's another level: it is live and it is a song with some real belting from the start. And you asked for suggestions. I have one. A girl as talented as Angelina is, but in a complete different genre. 20 Year old Lucy Thomas from the UK. A few days ago she released a cover from "Unchained Melodies" on her KZbin channel (Lucy Thomas Official). And as Angelina does, Lucy tends to make songs 'her own'. I follow both singers since a few years now and so far they never have failed to impress me very much.
