Corrected English subtitles and translations are up! Happy Mother's Day! Also some ideas from commenters: Accordion fold a 6 X 8" card at 1" intervals to make a pen tray. Use a carpet sample in the way I use my Shinari tray. "Blue tack" down the chopstick rests to your table. Use extra scrabble tile trays as a “rest”.

I use a concertinaed piece of card to hold pens I'm working on. Works surprisingly well.

When I take inventory of my pen collection, pens-in-cups do not count toward the total. Thus, storing pens in cups is an important pen management strategy for me. It low-balls my total.

1. How nice to hear from you again. 2. Hanabi for the win. 3. I take a 6"x8" card (or similar) and accordion-fold it at 1" intervals to make a tray for flopping my pens down onto. The MacGyveresqeness of it pleases me.

That is a great idea. I still use a surplus Scrabble Tile tray as a pen rest. If I was handy with craft projects, I should paint, felt or flock it somehow, but, kinda like you, I rather enjoy the "MacGyveresqeness" of it. Hmm, that's more difficult to type than it is to say!! :)

I enjoy your videos very much. Interesting content,great editing, camera-work and not least of all your lovely voice! My choice of pen rests may be a "trigger" for some;I use empty pistol-ammo trays to display my pens and keep them handy. The calibers that work for almost all my pens are either .45acp or 9mm. I have 20 and 50-round plastic trays. More functional than pretty, like my pens.

I've been missing your videos -- there's no one else out there creating content like yours. This was a fun topic. The Coppertist snake pen holder seems to be showing up everywhere on KZbin, and it looks both beautiful and sturdy. I can't buy one unless I have a much cleaner desk! I do use chopstick rests and have quite a few different ones from local shops. In addition to Asian-themed shops, the more upscale kitchen shops and natural foods co-ops tend to carry at least a few. I love the dog and bone one!

Ah, that's a good tip on the chopstick rests. Actually the snake pen rest is great for a sloppy desk (which is VERY much how mine is) because it keeps scaring you when you uncover it! Thanks for being such a great support 💞

That’s a great question. The scales themself are pretty smooth and I saw no problem with Urushi or the MB. But I don’t use it as a “rest” but as a display so I’m not worried about that aspect at all.

Welcome back!! Your "trigger warning" definitely had me laughing. With the exception of a beautiful walnut pen tray from Wonderpens in Toronto (gift from my spouse, who also made me a small drawer for my desk to hold the tray) all my pen rests are MacGyvered. These include: an old coffee mug (like you, for the cheapies), a chopsticks rest, a Danish porcelain ashtray, and a glass flower frog. The latter is super useful for holding separate parts-sections, converters, etc.-on cleaning day. Necessity is the mother of MacGyvering as I like to say! 😂

Hi! One of your subscribers recommended you as a good person to ask about where to shop for fountain pens in Japan. My husband is there for the next two weeks and my hope is he will come home with something raden, maki-e, or Urushi that can’t be purchased anywhere else. Alternatively, a limited edition of something that we can get in the US, but can’t get that color or decoration style in the US would work, too. (example: a Pilot Capless (aka Vanishing Point). Do you have any recommendations for specific stores to visit? He will be in Osaka and Tokyo, mostly.

As always, interesting, entertaining and informative! Well done!! Loved your "trigger warning" - your solution for workhorse pens works fine by me. (I cushion mine with a paper towel too.) I'm a "dog guy" but I love the Cat riding the Mouse-cycle! Very cute as long as your pens don't play cat and mouse with you. OK. that was kinda lame, but I do like that pen rest. SBRE Brown just reviewed the Rattlesnake stand. Your images and his really make the craftsmanship of that snake look amazing. Snakes don't bother me unless they surprise me (that _has_ happened!) and, since I grew up in Rattler country, I find them (well, at least the pen stands) pretty interesting and even nostalgic if that isn't too strange. As a geology / rock hound, you probably have some "feelings" about rattlesnakes too. Have you heard of or tried the "Penwell" made by Dan Keller and sold through his "Good made better" website? I find his products well crafted and quite functional. The Penwell makes it easy to use a capped pen as a "desk pen" for frequently interrupted writing sessions. Thanks for another great review.
@InkyRocks
@InkyRocks Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. I had not realized there were so many reviews on the snake rest. I had gotten an email earlier but I wasn’t doing vids at the time. I’ll need to check out the Penwell!
@randy-9842
@randy-9842 Жыл бұрын
@@InkyRocks I certainly don't mind multiple reviews of the same product. Different reviewers with diverse opinions and perspectives are good to have! This snake stand is so unique and, possibly even "trigger worthy" by itself. Furthermore, your own photos and comments are very clear and detailed. Thank you!! When I last checked out his website (EDIT: ie: Coppertist Wu's website), these had sold out, so they must be popular. ---- Dan (EDIT: at his Good Made Better website) has expanded his line since he first produced the Penwell and now has a number of items. I bought two Penwells when they first came out; one Walnut (for my glass-topped desk) and one heavy Brass (for my kitchen / dining room countertop). I find them attractive and they work just as he claims. However, you (and others) _might not_ benefit by them since you habitually hold the "loose" pen caps in your "off" hand anyway. I've done that, too, for short writing sessions, but I still like leaving the caps "in their homes" whether its an extended or frequently interrupted writing session. (Oh, and no, I don't get any benefit from his sales nor are we related, I just like his personality (as I do yours!) and his products!)

@@InkyRocks Correction to my earlier comment - This snake pen stand IS currently available on his website. I'm not sure if I just missed it, it's been restocked, or a decision was made to produce some more of them.

I never thought of using chopstick rests. As if I needed an excuse to shop for pen related items, even when they're NOT pen related... 😅😊😂 EDIT to add: Anybody who is upset at that very nice looking cup for your pens would probably hate my desk. I have a coffee jar for the same purpose, and uninked pens sit in what was originally a cutlery tray, which I took the bottom off and padded before re-fitting it. I do like those wooden rests before the bit with your cup, and have some beautifully figured wood that i could make some from.

All of those pen stands are so stunning, I am truly speechless. It feels weird to call them "pen stands", where even a small plastic toy astounds me with level of detail... Insanity. Also oh god those glass pens... swoon... On a side note almost all japanese "incense holders" that I saw need to have some additional plate or such underneath. It's so weird. The chopstick stand is a cool idea, I wonder if they are available where I live... Must check it out! I was a bit shocked that putting pens in a cup is bad, apparently?? >:O It's definitely much more space-efficient though! So many of those pen stands feel luxurious also in terms of space on desk!! I have no space so cup it is, maybe a sturdy paper cup or box could be a solution? Thank you for another lovely video, good to see you back~

“[The rattle-snake’s] eye excelled in brightness, that of any other animal, and that she has no eye-lids. She may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance. She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders: She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage. As if anxious to prevent all pretensions of quarrelling with her, the weapons with which nature has furnished her, she conceals in the roof of her mouth, so that, to those who are unacquainted with her, she appears to be a most defenseless animal; and even when those weapons are shewn and extended for her defence, they appear weak and contemptible; but their wounds however small, are decisive and fatal. Conscious of this, she never wounds till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her. Was I wrong, Sir, in thinking this a strong picture of the temper and conduct of America? The poison of her teeth is the necessary means of digesting her food, and at the same time is certain destruction to her enemies. This may be understood to intimate that those things which are destructive to our enemies, may be to us not only harmless, but absolutely necessary to our existence … ‘Tis curious and amazing to observe how distinct and independent of each other the rattles of this animal are, and yet how firmly they are united together, so as never to be separated but by breaking them to pieces. One of those rattles singly, is incapable of producing sound, but the ringing of thirteen together, is sufficient to alarm the boldest man living.” -Benjamin Franklin

@@InkyRocks if he had his way, we would have had the Timber Rattlesnake instead of the Bald Eagle as our national animal, and given what Ben wrote here, I have to say it would also have made a great animal to represent us. I bet you can guess which one of the pen holders I'm picking up!

Oh man, I hope your fam are all ok, or better yet, thriving 💜 Thanks for brightening up my day and totally blowing me away! Those specimens are a very enjoyable extra treat, and beautifully composed with the pens. Great reason to hit replay.✒ That carved dragon is INSANE and the particular pen stand, the snake, is like nothing I've seen to date. I have to have it. I never knew till now. It's exactly what I need for one of my dansu/tansu chests. I don't really have a choice in this matter. Çe la vie 🤔 Wishing you and all your loved ones excellent health, happiness and prosperity 💛👍 Arigato gozaimashita 🙏

It's a vintage pocket pen and looks a lot like the e95.

@@Bodhi246 it doesn’t have a name as far as I can tell. It’s was sold to me as a “Pocket Pen” from Mr Pilot (he has like 40 years working for Pilot and goes to shows here selling vintage Pilots.) Edit to add: I think it was called that too on eBay as I checked the price there.

Speaking of free pen rests, Colorverse inks offers a free pen rest with their combo set of inks. It's a bit of plastic that you can fold into itself, but it does the trick. That snake pen rest is something else though!
