The Drillog dip pen is expensive, but for me it seems worth it. I'll be able to use it as an actual pen and not just for playing around like I do with my glass dip pen. This is the most exciting I've been for a pen and ink item in a while.

I feel like it is so useful. I took it to a pen meet and just threw it in my purse. Then after trying my last ink, I didn't even clean it off, I just capped it and when I got home, I wrote some more with that ink and then finally rinsed it out. If you haven't ordered one yet, I would wait till they get their website up because there are so many styles and they are coming out with different kinds of nibs, even a stub.

You can also just dip an empty fountain pen in ink to test ink without filling it. It would still fill the channels of the feed which will let you write a sentence to a few sentences depending on the nib

Yes and I like that technique too! Part of the problem is that it is more work to clean than say a dip pen or glass pen which just takes one dunk in some water. So I use them when messing with multiple inks.

My old Parker 45, 14k gold, medium nib, can write an entire A4 page with one dip. I was using it to test the inks from Diamine's Inkvent 2022 calendar, and thought I'd perhaps get two paragraphs at the most, but no. Approx 350 to 400 words altogether.

I just got my first glass pen and I really get the hype now, regular dip pens feel like they run dry so quickly, but sometimes you don’t want to clean out your pen to try an ink... mines a cheap one but if I ever get the money I’d love to invest in one like this.

Glass pens are a solid for me. Like you said, they are so useful in trying out inks. I occasionally write letters with mine when I want to show my penpal several new inks or whatever!

That’s understandable. You might look into using a pen with a small nib. So if you really choke up on the section, you will be close to the paper (as if you are holding a pencil near the tip)

"practically indestructible" I GUARANTEE you, a single drop with the nib facing downwards will completely ruin it like basically any other non ballpoint style pen, it's a thin piece of metal, it might bot shatter but it will bend, and a bent nib isn't even heavy enough to be used as a paperweight

yes, but you need to change the nib. The Drillog (which I don't use, I'm selling it) is interesting to many people as it is just another way along with dip pens, glass pens refillable felt tip pens to play with ink.

I think their sudden popularity has caught them a bit flat footed. After they get the website up and running and are caught up with the demand here, they may eventually mail over seas. Also, after getting their website up, proxy services can send you the pen. I'm glad you are enjoying the Blue Dew. It stays in my rotation permanently!

It made by Toos and impossible to get outside of Japan (and pretty difficult in Japan). Hanabi Glass in Yokohama is run by and English speaker and he makes italics special order to specs.

I had a real close friend who has spent some time in prison before I met him. While in there he learned and perfected calligraphy. Looking at a page he had written was absolutely beautiful, like a piece of art.

i would just use a regular dip pen, theyre cheap, steel nibs are easily replaceable for different flex styles, and dont have a ridiculously long "nib" section so your hands are closer to the tip, i hate that withthe drillog you basically have to hold it halfway up the shaft, that position really cramps my hand and causes my writing to look worse than a 5 year old. just dip it every 5 words (unless youre irish), they even make "hard" nibs that dont flex for calligraphy if you want that straight line look

The one that spills is YaChing Turquoise. I have a “reel” on IG about it. It has actual turquoise in it. The ink dripping down the water is Kala “Dude” and the blue ink is Sailor’s Sailor

I think it's only been introduced in Japan (it's a Japanese company.) If you look at the pinned comment on the top, I have a link to their website. They still aren't shipping overseas yet, but some people have been using a proxy service like Tenso. You can also buy them at some bookstores like Tsutaya in Japan.

Happy New Years Day over there. :) It's strange thinking about how that Drilog was engineered. It's likely that there's some form of stainless steel or anti-corrosive metal, but the nib is probably entirely made of said material, including the handle. No kinks for the liquid to seep in like those racks for dishwashing or shampoo holding I hope. It looks completely solid. How's the weight?

Happy New Year to you! So far I haven't any seepage where you screw the nib into the handle. A bonus is that I can cap the pen without rinsing it and it doesn't leak and then use the ink again, and then rinse it off. It is solidly built and a little heavy for its size (70 grams). They said they made some new ones in aluminum (the body--all the nibs are SS). There are many models, most larger than this one.

@@InkyRocks It arrived... and now I have ink all over my hands so you know that's a good sign ;-) The good - It's a machined work of art. The not so good? First impressions? It's really scratchy... and dry. I wonder if I should be trying different inks and papers with it? Any advice?

@@puppetaccess absolutely! First, you need to make sure you fully dip the nib into the ink. As it gets down to the last bit of ink, it becomes less smooth and you have to rotate it to get to where some of the ink is still left in the channels. That is why I didn't really like it much when I first tried it at the show. Then I bought it and played around with it. You can write a whole page with one dip. Then, you have to have a bit of a light hand. If you press hard, I don't think the stainless steel is going to be as smooth as a nib. Then I would also try a wet ink. You won't be limited to a wet in once you figure out how it works best for you. I use all kinds of ink.

Don't worry, it is my favorite ink and pretty expensive--I pour out most of the ink into a clean beaker to do these, and then repour it back into the bottle afterwards. I love this ink and would not waste it !

I wanted this pen after watching your video from the 2020 Tokyo Pen Show. I'm looking forward to purchasing and am so excited. Is it very heavy, being that it is made of stainless steel?

Thank you for watching! Mine is heavy as it's stainless steel. But they have other styles made of aluminum and they have also now made a pen like mine out of aluminum because some people said it was too heavy. If you are concerned about the weight, I would go aluminum. Mine is 12cm long and 70 grams (about 5 inches and 2.5 ounces.)
