I’m curious to see what species the fossils could belong to, and why specifically are the jaws so well preserved?
@complimentary_voucher
@complimentary_voucher Жыл бұрын
Probably because they're strong and dense for their size, not too interesting scavenger-wise and shaped so that they slide and settle in protected crevices, as per these examples.
@connorjohnson4402
@connorjohnson4402 Жыл бұрын
Its highly possible that they are extinct species that no longer exist, also the beak whale skulls are really the only types of bones that can last for any length of time in the open water, Their density and mineral composition is such that it does not dissolve and is not eaten like other bones which allows it to stay around long enough to grow a ferromanganese crust like they have which just further preserves it,
@oddsidian1691

@@connorjohnson4402 interesting, Are fossils of extinct species found loose on the ocean floor often?

I always wondered if bones could fossilize under the sea. Makes me wish I had a submarine that could explore Columbia Bar just off the coast of Washington/ Oregon to see the possible shipwrecks and maybe farther off the coast to see if there is any signs of the residual from the lake Missoula floods, possibly fossilized Pleistocene creatures that were swept away in the floods.

Maybe a smaller ROV fitted with a camera from a boat could be a small start? I think this may be of interest for sponsors actually. I would love to see it happen, i always fond the early history of Oregon deeply fashinating, alltought it is not as well known in Europe. I remember there was a German diving society not that long time ago who actualy did it and built a full size small research submarine from scratch complete with a divers dock and and rooms (i can't remember their name fopr the projject right now, but i did see some KZbin clips taken inside the submarine while it was in operation for safety testing it, as far as i know they did put it to use shortly after. ), etc. So i think it is doable, i don't think they where super rich people either, but extremely dedicated guys.

So in this case these skulls are kind of unique in their ability to remain in the environment long enough to become covered in a ferromanganese crust like this, most other bones will be dissolved away or eaten fairly quickly. Its pretty rare for bones that arent covered in some sediment layers to become fossilised

I'm curious as to how 'delicate' the claw, on the rov, can be. Is there some sort of system, like a clutch of some sort, that allows you to adjust how much pressure can be applied, at maximum, through the claw? Or is it, perhaps, up to the operators input - simply stopping when they believe enough pressure is applied?
@connorjohnson4402
@connorjohnson4402 Жыл бұрын
Yes they are hydraulics and they can adjust the grip force for the claws to different settings.

Might be a good idea to equip the ROV with rubberized jaws. In theory, they would not impede any operation and should be easily done even in DIY style, using something like plasti-dip or other similar products, which are reversible methods of coating items in rubber (without vulcanization). I'm saying this on two observations. One, i've seen a few things slip and two, rubber would have some compliance and give, thus less chance of damaging a specimen. Just my 2 cents. Regardless of that, stunning finds. I don't know the incidence of fossil bones on the sea floor, but it can't be a walk in the park either, so the crew cashed in on a lot of luck with these.

I think such device could even be mounted direktly on the existing setup without any critical modifications.
@connorjohnson4402
@connorjohnson4402 Жыл бұрын
The jaw does have a soft compliant section on it to help with the collections of coral that are next to the blades that are used to snip things its the yellow looking section on the jaws, but they do have things like that as well as different types of jaws but collecting these is kind of a rarity.

I guess you would date by measuring thickness of the crust? I remember on 1 November 2020, Hercules found what looked like a backbone/ ribcage of some creature embedded in a rock near Cortes Banks/ San Diego.
@connorjohnson4402
@connorjohnson4402 Жыл бұрын
i believe that was a mammoth tusk, and it will be interesting to see how they can be dated rates of ferromanganese crust deposition can vary with water conditions and its usually fairly tricky to date things in the deep sea

Fossils is definitely not something I expected you guys to find down there. I wonder how a bone gets missed by bone worms and other elements of decomposition down there. How come those bones were left untouched especially in such a nutrient starved ecosystem. I would expect every morsel of food to be eaten and processed down there.

@gryaznygreeb
@gryaznygreeb Жыл бұрын
@@planeteopale Things shift and change. It could have been exposed at some point hundreds of thousands years ago due to some sort of earthquake or tsunami, and just so happened to be in an area that remains pretty still. I suspect the pressure in the ocean depths might keep sand in place pretty well compared to a shallow reef where it may shift daily like the sahara desert.
