My top tip for "Dawless" jamming would be a small label printer!! I have about 25 power supplies and they all have a label on them. Essential if you don't want to blow something up!

I'd just like to say to other viewers, if you already have a mixer, don't be afraid to get a Zoom H1 for a portable recorder if you are on a budget. It's been working great for me! There's some noise when holding it by hand if you're moving and recording with the built-in microphones (and some rattling which can be fixed just by taping down the switches on the bottom/back), but aside from that it's an excellent budget recorder!

You need cables. I, just this past winter, took a serious inventory of what cables I needed to really do my rig right. 1) I bought MIDI cables (and a quad thru like you showed for clocking. it works great btw) of several lengths so I could connect keyboards to the main rig(longer) or MIDI modules IN the rig(shorter) 2) 1/4" guitar cables for the actual sound. Once again long for keyboards, short for MIDI modules in the main rig 3) specific cables for my oddball assortment of used amps I scavenged so that I could get signal to them from the mixer, through the active crossover and EQ and into the amps. No more adapters. Life is much simpler and MUCH quieter now that I bit the bullet and dropped like $200 in the right cables and the MIDI quad-thru.

I like being Dawless, I like every knob and fader at my fingertips instead of using a mouse or whatever to access parameters and such. I do Chicago-style House music and am often asked how I get that classic House sound. I use all hardware, some of the same modules and synths that they used back in the day. Was recording on a Yamaha AW 1600 but I wanted more channels. So instead of spending about $1500 for a bigger new mixing console I just bought another used one ($200 off eBay) and midi'ed 'em together for 32 tracks, 14 record simultaneous! New tracks, classic feel. Next on my radar is a Roland Juno-6!! BTW, great presentation!

Right! It's a bit pricey (at about $1300 used and up on eBay) but I REALLY want to use that arpeggiator trigger! The item that helped most was the motu midi express XT this works standalone and allows connections to be made virtually. it saves so much time instead of swapping midi cables around. Quite expensive yes but well worth the money. I could send midi, block midi, merge or make my own connections. Certainly better than a 1 to 4 or 1 to 25 or merge units separately.

I've always been Dawless, because while my friend was always trying to convince me to get a laptop with a good sound card, every time I asked him what he was working on, his computer had crashed.I have him to thank or at least his troubled laptop. My hardware has been very reliable with the exception of keyboards that are close to computers in menu diving and all that. I always knew most people would think I am crazy for not taking advantage of computers, but even if it's a gimmick, it works for me. Thanks for the midi tip!

Hi @Dawless Jammin' Thanks for this video. It was very helpful. Can you make a video on beginners basics? Such as "how to do daisy chaining" and showing how clocking works either through a sequencer or a groovebox in combination with different synths? Apart from buying all this great gear, figuring out how to wire it all can be an even bigger challenge for a beginner. Thanks in advance!

I seem to be able to get away with daisy chaining twice. After that things get sketchy like missed notes or a note stays on because the "NOTE OFF" got lost. that will wreck a performance , a stuck note. I have old junk MIDI modules but I learned from stringing them together, you enable all the clock ins and clock outs you can find in the system settings and disable all the program change stuff. For a drum machine (like my ancient Alesis) you turn off the "note in" also otherwise it plays drum sounds like the musical notes when you only need the selected kit to play in time, not play notes. Also my original beatstep, which I got as a sequencer and master clock is not powerful enough to power the quadra thru, so be warned. if I want the sequencer, I have to run it into my alesis drum machine THEN out into the quadra-thru which bums me out, but it works. My go-to MIDI setup is Yamaha MX-88 main keyboard which has an awesome EZ2 use tempo setting which is the clock to the quadra-thru which splits the MIDI into 4 parallel MIDIs all timed together. one out goes to the old Korg x-50 which has dual arpeggiators that will follow the clock, one out goes to the alesis drum machine which follows the clock, one out goes to the roland jv module which follows the notes played and the last out goes to the old boss GM module. I then can daisy chain the old kawaii module to either the roland or the boss. this makes for a HUGE wall of sound and no missed or hung notes. You need MIDI cables for all of this

I would say, if any of your gear fits the 19" rack format, I would invest in a portable rack for said gear. It doesn't have to be that big -- around 6U-10U should do the trick. I have my mixer, MIDI interface, and effects mounted into my Gator case, and it's really convenient to setup my rig for live shows. Everything's plugged in and labelled, and I just plug the other end of my audio and MIDI cables to my synths. At the end of the show, I power down, unplug, and take off. Also, I highly recommend a ground loop isolator/hum eliminator. There will be times you go to a gig, and the venue's electrical system is out of whack. $25 at Guitar Center will eliminate that buzz you get from ground loops.

I've been putting together a completely iOS rig and ended up getting a Tascam US-4x4 USB Audio Interface. It can work as a mixer and/or interface. The 4 inputs enable me to hook up my Beat Buddy in stereo and either one of my synths run through a stereo effects rig. If inspiration strikes, I keep the usb cable with lightning adapter attached so I can quickly hook up my phone or iPad and record. While the Beat Buddy has a pass through; I like to record things separately to apply different workflows to each.

I actually use my Scarlett 18i8 as a mixer. Pro-tip: it does audio pass-through even when not plugged-in to a computer: I was super excited when I found that out. Also, maybe not a tip for beginner users, but I feel that iConnect Midi 4+ is a must-have for all Dawless jammers; it allows you to use cheap, usb-only controllers as standalone devices for your hardware, integrate iPad synths and synth editors, and makes it possible to deliver any midi routing possible. Awesome video, as always!

LOL, although when it's not connected to a computer, it can't really be called an "interface", as there's nothing to interface with. Honestly, the ICM4+ is the best piece of equipment I've ever owned: can't recommend it enough.
@Pianet
@Pianet 6 жыл бұрын
The great thing about the interface route is that you can use a 90s ADAT/HD recorder and record over adat. This way you use the great analog to digital converters in your interface as opposed to the really meh one in zoom/tascam recorder. This also means that your mixes aren't permanent. As each channel is recorded separately. You can even move bars around. Also because your signal to noise ratios are so much better you can pop a channel out of you recording and into an effect over and over again before you lose the recording to noise.

Good Vid!!! I love my Roland VS-840 as a 6 channel mixer with incredible FX built in. Also a great EQ, so there are a few multitrackers that surpass a standard mixer esp. when I got it for $50!!! I endorse people looking at the Roland VS series as the 1640 I've seen for $300 and it is still portable, great FX, and records right to CD. But I might just get rid of it all and get 2 OP-Z's when they finally drop on the scene!!!

I think a proper effects unit is very important too. Like not just mixer built-in effects, but I mean one of the serious units that can become a form of synthesis themselves, like an Eventide Space or whatever other equivalent, like a Blue Sky or whatever budget allows. Shimmer reverb, for example, can become like an instrument in itself, creating huge landscapes out of the measliest source material.

Totally with you regarding the MIDI thru box! Such a game changer and productivity booster. My number 5 item on the list would be a patchbay. Normally when you have (let's say) like 8 devices (groovebox, synth, FX, audio interface / DAW, field recorder, mobile phone, whatever) and you want all of them plugged in somewhere, you'd have to look for a 12 or 16 channel mixer or so (counting in a bit of headroom). But after all, you rarely mix all devices together at the same time, but only 2-4 or so. When acquiring a patchbay, you can basically get away with a 4-8 channel mixer while having the flexibility of 24 or 48 channels (if you don't mind patching the signals around instead of turning up / down a mixer channel). + you get that huge amount of connections and routing capabilities for a fraction of the price of a mixer with comparable flexibility. It also massively reduces the wear of other gear (plugs), since you simply connect everything to the patchbay once, and every other routing is done on the patchbay itself. If the plugs wear of, its much cheaper to replace a patch bay (or just not use the malfunctioning patchbay channel) instead of repairing or replacing a synth/sequencer/groove box/...

Just a friendly word of advice, DON'T bother getting the Volca Beats. I have all the other Volcas (except Kick) and love them all. I almost never get rid of anything, even if i don't use it a lot. But the Volca Beats is just rubbish.
@marijapaskeviciute365
@marijapaskeviciute365 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking, I wasn't too impressed with Volca Beats. Besides, I have Push 2 and it works very well with drums. Volca Kick sounds good though! Since we're talking about Volcas, I still haven't connected them to Ableton, I'm wondering whether I should get a mixer or an audio interface. Audio interface seems more versatile, especially with Push, but it's probably more CPU intensive to mix in Ableton than to have only 2 separate audio channels for both Volcas? My laptop isn't super powerful (Macbook Pro 2016, 2GHz i5, 8 GB RAM). I'm very new at this, any help would be appreciated :)

My first Dawless setup consisted of a Roland TR626 which I still have, and a crappy Yamaha PSR home keyboard which I chose because it had MIDI plugged into a bargain basement cassette four track. Another cheap option for MIDI syncing is the MOTU MIDI Time Piece AV. It's a 19 inch module with 8 inputs and 8 outputs and you don't need a computer to use it as you can set the MIDI routings right from the front panel. They're only $60 bucks on Reverb right now but they're a lot harder to come by than the Quadra Thru.

My advice would be.......Well, dont forget that dawless may mean that you are still allowed to use your iphone and there are drum apps there, there are loop apps there, recording apps and there are effects there, so you need a TRS to TRRS cable. You can always buy a Zoom effects pedal or loop pedal after that but it is a good way of at least trying out things. And also buy a microphone maybe, you can plug it even into the cheap behringer mixer. Voice effects are cool too and sometimes you wont hear your voice at all but just a crazy synth melody.

It can be your mixer (no auxs though), stand alone multi tracker (if you want), your sound card (if you need) or you can even save the recorded tracks (up to 8 at the same time) on an SD card for future edit in your laptop. Also it works with batteries. I'm dawless and this is my to-go device. I would still have an analog mixer, just because synths sounds amazing on analog mixers.

And built in FX: reverb, chorus, etc. per track. Yup, love my R16. Currently have one mixer going to tracks 1/2, second mixer to tracks 3/4, drum machine to tracks 5/6 and tracks 7/8 for that rare occasion to record off the laptop.

Hey Jade. Great video. Most of what you touch on I agree with. The monitors though for me I have to disagree with. I tried mixing on some Behringer computer monitors that I took around with me as a portable solution. For recording they were fine. For mixing? Hell no!! Play that mix on a hifi or in the car and it was instantly found out. For monitors actual studio quality monitors are the best for the all around purpose in my opinion. Buy the best that your budget can afford that have a flat response. Save up if you have to but don't just get computer speakers or very cheap options as it ends up being expensive in the end when you have to buy proper ones anyhow. That's my experience of monitors anyhow

Thanks! Yeah that's what I meant. Computer monitors will not replace Studio monitors. But for someone on a budget that just need to hear their music, computer monitors will do. For mixing, nooo

I have stumbled across a set of computer speakers, that were only £30, that are not as bad as you would imagine! I guess it makes all the difference that they have a sub (i think they were made for watching movies on a laptop). But i just think of it as part of hearing my music on as wide a variety of different systems as i can. Like the old "car stereo test". I doubt anything will beat having a good set of flat response monitors in your set up though, if and when you can get them. So i am pretty sure i need to get me some KRK Rokits one day! I'm always having to (politely) explain to some younger, total newbies, that the great set of hi-fi speakers that they are enthusiastic about will tweak the sound in a way that defeats the point. :-)

Dawless Jammin' - one tip for mixing on cheap speakers/monitors is to play a commercial track of a similar genre through those monitors, just to give yourself the feeling of how much bass/mid/treble to mix in. In a lot of ways if your mix sounds good on cheap speakers then you've got a good mix, that's why Yamaha sold NS10s by the bucket load!! Problem these days is that there are so many great little synths to tempt you away from spending on monitors, give me a Minibrute or Monologue and I'll happily do without a monitor upgrade :-)

I guess whatever tips, there's always got to be compromise in the real world. Especially if this is a hobby that is never gonna make money. And even more so if money is already tight. Still good to have some good, sensible tips to TRY to learn from though!

If the speaker monitors aren't flat response then you could reference commercial tracks as much as you like, your mixes won't translate. Believe me I tried and if I could have gotten away with using Samson Resolv65 monitors I would have. Using Genelec 8020's and A/B ing them in a store in Cologne against KRK Rokits made me realise why one Genelec 8020 costs the same as 2 Rokits. Here is my tip, you can get away with a cheap synth, a cheap pre amp, even a cheap mic. Cheap monitors? No way. Save up and get the best possible so you can hear exactly how your mix sounds. NS10's were marketed as flat response hifi speakers giving you the true sound of your music. Studios jumped on using them because they are the true sound and not coloured or boosted in any way. If they sound good on NS10's then they usually sound good on any other system. Slam 666 never give up hope that you can make money from music. Always believe that you can and aim to. It's the best industry for a creative person to work in especially now that equipment is so affordable. Study those who are making a living from it and emulate them. Even if you only make a second income from it you still will be better off and be able to eventually buy the equipment you want from earnings you have made. Those are my tips for the day lol

The advantage of a hardware multitrack is that you can fix your mix after the fact but I record out of the USB output on my mixer into my Android phone so I can export directly to FLAC from audioevolution app into my Google drive. But I'm only capturing a steroid mix at 24/48, would be nice to have track isolation at the cost of some menu diving. back in the 90s I used a tape machine to do dawless jamming before there were daws lol. We didn't have access to digital recording back then it was all 4 track tape machines.

24 bit 48khz is really a sweet spot for good recording. People I know who you ave been sound engineers since the 70s swear by 24/48 rather than 24/192 or 24/96, you tend to get sounds you don't want at 96khz, if you only record at 16 bit you do get an inferior quality to cassette.

I'm going to have to start up my series talking about dawless jamming in the 90s and playing "live pa" shows back when people thought anyone who wasn't playing with vinyl records was insane lol, but we used to play live shows in the 90s when PCs were running dos and the only person making music with a Mac was Prince lol.

Hey! Curious to hear your thoughts on the 1010music Blubox? Seems to be a portable touch screen mixer that also has the ability to arrange recordings into a song. I’m looking to spend as much time outside of the box and was debating about picking one up for my digitakt/tone combo. Also thought about a zoom recorder but leaning more towards the bluebox. I get the urge to eschew from a mouse, display, etc, but I really feel like some people take themselves and the anti-computer thing _way_ too seriously. Same thing with the analog vs virtual analog shitstorm. It seems like a lot of this comes from a lack of understanding of what's under the hood with many synths, effect modules, etc + subjective and opinionated thresholds on arbitrary specs, like screen size. The lexicon varies from person to person. For example, what exactly is hardware? A personal computer is hardware and a digital synthesizer is a computer, yet many people gripe about wanting to have a "hardware only" setup. This is probably why "DAWless" was coined, however a DAW was not initially made for jamming / live play; they were made for scoring / programming. Although DAWs today have evolved to accomodate live performance, I think it's a bit silly that people expect the line to be so blurred, but I'm also not really a musician, so it's more of a fly on the wall observation. No matter what you do, there is always another layer of elitist waiting in the wings to take a dump on your instrument choices. Consider how all of this topic must seem to the strictly acoustic musician; probably moot to the point of ridiculousness. Side topic / thought exercise: consider how many people would cease to be 'musicians' if electricity suddenly went away and didn't come back. :O

At one point in my past, I used tape recorders with built in mixers. Tascams, Fostex, Audio Technica... The last one I had before I got a digital recorder was an old Tascam 388 studio 8. Wasn't in great shape but usable. I recently had to give up 90% of what I had but, I still have a Korg D3200. If I could afford it, I'd go with a modern combo system, an analog/digital mixing console with perhaps one of the major digital recording systems... Pro Tools or something like it... At this point, I'm really just dreaming... Eh, oh well... :-(

Zoom R16 multitrack recorder was the single largest upgrade to my DAWless workflow. Sure, there's a little diving for initial EQ and track settings, but certainly not enough to get in the way of the creative process. Unless you absolutely HAVE to tweak more than one band of EQ on the fly during a live performance, it's like a 2 minute set-and-forget and it's super easy to navigate. It's also an 8x in audio interface with Mackie control in case you want to use it with a DAW as well. And it's battery powered. And has relatively decent stereo mics onboard. And it's affordable. What's not to like? :-)

I completely agree. I posted my own indignant rant about her dismissal of the R Series above. A much overlooked piece of gear dismissed by people without the intellectual capacity to learn simple routines. As an audio interface I use the mastering algorithm on all inputs for a clean signal into my DAW for example... The Zooms are very capable real-world Swiss Army Knives but like all good kit you need to read the manual and practice.

@@BaddBadger pick something "difficult" in it like using the sequence scheduling capability for multiple stage looping. Learn the routine with plenty of practice on different tracks and suddenly it's a really useful tool built into your workflow.

Great video. I watch all your jams and tips and tricks. I'm curious how the MIDI Thru works? So I can plug four of my synths in and have one out. What does that one out go into?
@colinrussell2017
@colinrussell2017 3 жыл бұрын
I think it takes the "out" from one synth and multiplies it x 4 to other instruments. So you could have 4 drum machines synced from a single clock source for example. Like she said, you could link all you boxes with their "outs" and "thru"s in a linear fashion (known as "daisy chaining" i believe), but this affordable little would save some hassle and keep your setup tidy.
@bahutu802
@bahutu802 Жыл бұрын
Probably not relevant anymore for the original commenter, just for clarification if someone else reads: As Colin describes, with a thru box, you split the MIDI OUT signal from one device into 4/5 MIDI signals, which you can then plug into the MIDI IN of other devices. One use case would be syncing the clock of devices, without introducing latency issues. Another use case would be to have a MIDI keyboard sending data to the box, so you can have multiple synths connected, receiving the MIDI. On each receiving device you can then setup a separate MIDI channel, so when you select a certain MIDI send channel on the MIDI keyboard (or sequencer / groovebox / DAW), only one of the connected devices responds. There are also MIDI Merge boxes, which receive the MIDI of multiple devices and merge it to one single output. So for example you want to control a synth both from a sequencer AND a MIDI keyboard, you could use a MIDI Merger for that.

Before buying any synth or hardware I strongly suggest to invest in one EXCELLENT monitor speaker. If 2 are too expensive, start with one. It's better to have 1 excellent speaker than 2 good ones. My suggestion: Focal Twin6 Be.

Nice video! Being able to record four separate tracks (2 stereo tracks) is hugely important to me, when I'm jamming with a friend. He tends to sing rather loud at times, while using effects. It can therefore be hard to determine the level of what's being recorded during the jam. By recording his vocals into a separate stereo track, I can adjust the levels afterwards (or even do some more editing in a daw, if I absolutely have to ;) ) . I'm a bit stuck on getting a mixer... I'm not happy with my on-stage sound when playing synths live. I'm thinking of somehow getting my own mix through some in-ear monitors. I have looked at the mixers you mentioned, but they seem to have a lot of things I don't need (eq's, effects, etc.) and either lacking things I do need, or being way to bulky to take on the road. As I'm starting a diy eurorack system anyway, I might end up building one myself. Also, a question regarding studio monitors: I'm currently using B&W DM2a's. I'm aware that they're HiFi speakers, albeit with a very flat response and low distortion. They can be found cheap (got mine for 70 euro's, used), and are some of the best sounding speakers I've heard. Would it make sense to get actual monitors, or would that be a waste of money?
